Article by Aislinn Keely ’16:
On Saturday, October 17, Kellenberg’s Academic Quiz Bowl team rose long before the sun to travel to Columbia University for a tournament totaling thirty-two teams. In true Long Island fashion, the ten students and two moderators rode the LIRR to Penn Station and plotted a course through the labyrinth of the New York City subway to make their way to Columbia University. The team passed the time with practice questions and conversation on the journey in.
Unlike the normal tournament set up of five preliminary morning matches and five afternoon matches with a break for lunch in between, the amount of teams forced the structure into an unusual seven morning matches and three afternoon matches. Your Kellenberg Academic Quiz Bowl team kept endurance through the long morning session. The A-Team, composed of Seniors Erika San Antonio, Matthew York, and Jordan Johnston, along with Junior Calvin Bernic emerged with a morning record of 3-4. The B-Team of Seniors Timothy Byrne and Aislinn Keely with Sophomores John Cascio and Natalia Glebocki, Freshman Meryl Lennon, and Squire Joshua Antony played well, ending the morning with a 2-5 record.
The full team regrouped for lunch before the afternoon’s three consolation matches. The A and B teams were placed in the same consolation match, meaning that the after lunch proceedings included an exciting Kellenberg against Kellenberg match up. The B team fought hard to end the match in dramatic fashion. With the score hinging on the final question, the B team failed to gain the necessary points, giving A team the victory. The B team went 0-3 in the afternoon matches, but the A team added another win, leaving their afternoon record at 2-1.
All in all, the day was one full of learning and exciting games. The team is looking forward to its next tournament, and would like to thank Brother Nigel and Brother Kent for their support and coaching.
