Mk 1:1-8
The Gospel of Mark talks about the coming of Jesus Christ the Son of God. The Gospel reflects the coming of Jesus through John the Baptist. John the Baptist in this gospel acts as a forerunner of Christ. He spreads the good news of Christ’s coming through Baptism and word of mouth. A Forerunner is a predecessor, someone who prepares the way for something coming after them. John the Baptist, in this Gospel, informs the Judean people of the coming of the Savior and prepares them through repentance for his coming. Many people at this time thought that John was in fact the savior the Gospel had talked about, but John corrected them saying “One mightier than I is coming after me… I have baptized you with water; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit”. John baptized the people in the Jordan River and tells them to repent. The prophet Isaiah said “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way.” John the Baptist is this messenger and in the Gospel of Mark he did indeed prepare the way for Jesus.
