At the June 10 meeting of the Eastern Property Owners’ Association, Jaime Gans, chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, announced that Michelle Manning is the 2014 recipient of the EPOA $1000 scholarship. Ms. Manning, a senior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, will be attending Georgetown University in September. According to Chairperson Gans, Manning is interested in studying psychology or business and marketing but has told us that no matter what her career choice, she will “stay committed to serving my community and individuals in need.”
The summer prior to starting high school, Michelle began her volunteer work at ANCHOR, working 30 hours per week, and continued there, during the school year, working on
Saturdays. She continues to work there until the present day. She is currently responsible for assisting the group leader, caring for the well-being of each camper in the group and monitoring the new volunteers. Michelle was also chosen by her school’s administration to run retreats for sophomore, freshman and middle school homerooms, acting as a peer role model through discussions and activities. As a member of Smart for three years, she tutored and mentored elementary school students at a school in an underprivileged area.
The other members of the EPOA Scholarshop Committee are Brian Noonan and Tom Nappi. According to Mr. Noonan there were 13 extraordinary candidates and it was very difficult making the final selection. “Each one of the 13 candidates is a winner,” said Mr. Nappi.
