On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, Kellenberg celebrated Mardi Gras together as a school community. In homeroom, students received a pass for free candy during their lunch periods. The cafeteria and the hallway outside of the ARK were elaborately decorated with metallic hanging swirls, Mardi Gras decals, and a New Orleans scene setter across the walls of the cafeteria and the hallway. The hallway was very glittery and sparkly. Mr. Moran, Mr. Finn, and Mr. O’Brien assisted sophomore student volunteers with handing out the M&Ms and Starbursts to students on their way to lunch. The students handing out candy were all dressed in Mardi Gras hats and vests to spread the cheer, as we prepared for Ash Wednesday to begin the season of Lent. Why do we celebrate Mardi Gras? Mardi Gras is French for, “Fat Tuesday,” because it is the day before we fast on Ash Wednesday, so we can have a special treat before fasting.
