Students, parents, alums and friends of Chaminade High School and Kellenberg Memorial High School along with volunteers from the St. Bernard Project helped out the residents of Breezy Point and Amityville who suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy. They helped the homeowners clean out the belongings that they wanted to keep. They also gutted sheet rock walls and flooring that had been inundated by the flood waters. In addition, they removed soggy insulation from the crawl spaces of the homes. For the past seven years they have worked at restoring homes in New Orleans but this year they are planning to stay home and help their local Long Islanders. Brittany Cafiero, a senior at K.M.H.S said, “I wanted to do something more to help with the devastations of the hurricane. I was amazed to see the unity from all the people volunteering to rebuild Breezy Point.” Pat O’Hara also a senior from K.M.H.S shared, “I knew how blessed I was after Hurricane Sandy and I knew I had to help those who weren’t as fortunate.”
