MT 17:1-9
Peter, James, and his brother John witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration on the top of a mountain. They were exposed to Moses and Elijah and stood in the white light that radiated like the sun from Jesus’ body. Then these three apostles heard the Lord say from above, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Peter, James, and John were fearful, and they fell prostrate. Jesus then came to them and told them, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” After hearing this the three men lifted their heads and saw nothing else but Jesus alone.
Being a Catholic in today’s world is not always easy, and often one is called to make sacrifices. This gospel has a powerful message because it exemplifies how we are all called to listen to Jesus, like the Lord told Peter, James, and John. Although this may be difficult sometimes, we need not be afraid. The gospel tells us that “when they raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone” and this teaches us that all we need to do as Catholics is to turn to the Lord and we will be satisfied.
