Matthew 23: 1-12
In this Gospel passage, Jesus is telling his followers to obey the laws created by the scribes and the Pharisees. However, he also tells them not to follow their example. He smashes the scribes and Pharisees, calling them hypocrites, criticizing them for not following their own example. These lawmakers want to be credited with the titles of “master” and “father”; they want their word to be taken over the word of Christ. They require others to obey the law of Moses, but make exceptions since they teach the law, do not obey it for themselves. For this reason, Jesus says that these people are not role models, but instead, we should look towards God and Jesus as models.
