On Friday April 20, the Varsity softball team took on Our Lady of Mercy at Hofstra stadium for a game in memory of Kellenberg’s beloved athletic director, Mr. Edward Solosky. All proceeds of the game went to the Solosky Memorial Children’s Fund to support Katie and Lauren, Mr. Solosky’s two daughters. In all, $6,500 was raised for the charity. Car magnets, bracelets, and 50/50 raffle tickets were also available during the game.
Father Albert Bertoni S.M. started the pre-game ceremonies by offering an invocation of prayer. Kellenberg junior, Mary Fitzgerald, then sang a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. After the national anthem, Katie and Lauren Solosky joined the captains of the team, Allie Pisciotta and Allie Mancini, on the mound to throw out the opening pitch.
The game was a defensive battle. The Firebird’s lone run came off of a home run in the fourth inning by senior Allie Pisciotta. Stephanie Staiano had two hits and a stolen base. Krista King and Amanda Crimarco also got on base for the Firebirds. From the beginning of the game, support was evident as many faculty members, students, and families came out to contribute to a great cause. The event was successful in raising money for a very meaningful cause. The impact Mr. Solosky made on the Kellenberg community was very evident through the support of the game in his honor.
