On Sunday, February 7, the Varsity Wrestling team put an impressive eight grapplers in the finals and crowned five champions at the NSCHSAA League Tournament. Nate Mompoint made history in becoming the first freshman from Kellenberg to win a league title when he pinned his opponent in the 106 pound final. Jason Javier claimed the crown at 120 pounds, avenging a loss from earlier in the season during the finals. Jason also defeated a defending CHSAA State Champion in the semifinals, and for his efforts was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Up next was Senior Max Tricolla using a last second escape to win the finals at 132 pounds in dramatic fashion. Senior captain, Josh Newman, dominated his finals match and recorded a first period fall for the title at 138 pounds. Finally Senior Marty Jensen capped off the day with an exclamation point when he threw a headlock in the first period and quickly pinned his opponent for the 182 pound championship.
Sean Coakley 113 pounds, Mike Cannon 170 pounds, and Leonidas Papadopoulos 195 pounds all lost close finals matches finishing as runners-up. Connor McDonald, John Ryan, and Anthony Lucente all earned third place for the tournament. Nasser Gonzalez, Antonio Pagnotta, and Frankie Hug also placed and will join all the others wrestling this Saturday & Sunday at the CHSAA Sectional Championship at Holy Trinity High School. In addition to looking for individual titles, the wrestlers will look to leave their mark on the season by winning the CHSAA Sectional Tournament Team Title for the first time in the schools history.
