LK 1:26-38
This gospel conveys an important message about the Blessed Mother. We see Mary being approached by Gabriel, who has come to tell her that she will bear a child. Mary’s responds, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” In this instance, Mary ponders the power of God. The Angel Gabriel reassures her, saying, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.” Mary then announces the “fiat”, her yes to God. She uses faith and reason to formulate a response, allowing herself to become an instrument of salvation. By proclaiming her fiat at the Annunciation, the Blessed Mother gives full consent to God’s plan of the Incarnation. She became the model of discipleship and as believers of Christ we should follow her perfect example.
