Today’s Gospel, focuses on Mary’s cousin Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah. While
Zechariah is praying in the temple, the angel Gabriel comes to him telling him that Elizabeth will
bear a son whom they should name John. Zechariah questions the angel saying that both he and
his wife are older. As a result, he is struck mute.
Zechariah’s doubts of the power of God teach us that we should always be open and
receptive to what God has in store for us. Although our faith does not allow us to see God and
understand his plans, it does not mean we should not believe in Him.
