Varsity Football

Kellenberg Memorial sponsors four different Football Teams; there is a Varsity Team for Seniors & Juniors, a Junior Varsity Team for sophomores, a Freshman Team, and Latin School team for the 7th & 8th graders. The high school teams compete in the prestigious New York Metropolitan Catholic High School Football League, while the Latin School team competes against other parochial middle schools in the area. Coach Kevin Hanifan has been the Varsity Football Coach for the Firebirds for the past 23 years.

This past 2014 season was a very successful one for the Firebirds. The Varsity team posted an 8-2 overall record, a perfect 5-0 league record and captured the leagues Regular Season “A” Title. Along the way the Firebird gathered wins over rival schools like Holy Trinity, Fordham Prep, and Christ the King. This success did not go unnoticed as the team rose to as high as #17 in the New York State Sports Writers Association “A” Poll for all schools in the state. After the successful regular season the team earned the right to compete in the AA playoffs. Although the team’s playoff run came up short, several Firebirds earned post season awards. Senior Quarterback Bobby Mossa was named the “A” Division Offensive Player of the year by the league and fellow senior Kenny Preisel was named the “A” Division Lineman of the year. In addition the Firebirds had four All League selections Linebacker/Wide Receiver Mike Greene, Quarterback Bobby Mossa, Running Back Jason Delucia, and Linebacker Mike Patalano. Quarterback Bobby Mossa and Running back Jason Delucia were also selected as All-State Honorable Mention from the New York State Sports Writers Association.

Success was not limited to the Varsity team as the Junior Varsity team posted a 6-6 overall record and a 6-4 league record. They got rolling at the end of the season and went on a run that saw them play in the AA Championship Game. On their path to the AA title game, the JV squad defeated the Chaminade JV team in the semi-final round. The freshman team also had much to be proud about as they finished the season with a winning record of 4-3-1.

The pride of Coach Hanifan’s tenure as the programs Head Coach is not about wins and losses nor the individual accolades.
