Mostly everyone knows about the famous animal loving saint, St. Francis of Assisi. However, many are not aware of the other, just as important and remarkable, St. Francis of Xavier. He was a missionary born in Xavier, which is now part of Spain, and was the co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He was also one of the first seven Jesuits dedicated at Montmartre in 1534. He served as the leader of a very large mission into Asia and was very influential in the growth and upkeep of Catholicism in many areas including: India, Japan, Borneo, the Maluku Islands, and other areas that had not been visited by Christian missionaries previously. Last May, I was confirmed in my home parish of St. Peter of Alcantara and took the name Francis, sharing this name with St. Francis Xavier, St. Francis of Assisi, and our new Pope!
