JN 5: 17-30
Jesus tells the Jews that when his father is at work, then he is at work. The Jews then got angry that Jesus has called God “his father”. Jesus explains to them how the son cannot do anything alone but can only see what the father does. Whoever does not honor the son, will not honor the father because the son came from the father. Jesus tells them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life”. Jesus tells the Jews that the hour has come when the dead shall rise and hear the voice and God. Those who have lived good lives shall receive resurrection of life. However, those who have done wrong shall receive resurrection of condemnation.
This gospel explains the relationship between the son and the father. It says when you love the son, you love the father. Jesus explains to the Jews that the father who had life in himself gave the son possession of life for himself. When the son was given life, he was also given the power to exercise judgment. Jesus also explained what will happen to the dead now that the hour has come. As Catholics, we must follow God’s will and do the right thing so we can receive the gift of eternal life. Jesus tells them that he does nothing by himself and only seeks the will of the one who has sent him. Do you seek God’s will?
