The Gospel reading for the first Sunday of Lent highlights the struggle that Jesus encountered when he stayed in the desert for 40 days. During this time, Jesus was tempted by Satan many times, but Jesus denied Satan’s temptations and stayed faithful to God. Then, Jesus returns to Galilee after John had been arrested. Jesus states, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Even during a time where Jesus was tempted by Satan, and his companions were being imprisoned, Jesus still remains faithful to the word of God, and tells everybody to spread it. To me, and for many teenagers in today’s day and age, I believe the gospel is telling us to stay faithful to the word of God throughout whatever hardships we may encounter. During Jesus’ time in the desert, he suffered through the temptations of the devil himself. If we can realize that Jesus himself suffered, then our suffering as humans can be justified as well. No matter what circumstance, the word of God will always prevail.
