On Wednesday August 26th, the Kellenberg Memorial Mock Trial Team took a step back in a time of rich American history with Broadway’s Hamilton, an innovative production detailing the life of Alexander Hamilton. After arriving in New York City, the team shared in school tradition and began with prayer at the St. Francis of Assisi Church.
While in the Church, we reflected at the 9/11 Memorial. Then, it was time for one of the best parts of a city trip: lunch! The group arrived at Tavola, a traditional Italian eatery. The food was delicious and the restaurant’s décor was like stepping back in time to the early 1900s. Two large pizza ovens sat in the back while shelves stacked with Sicilian lemonade and other decorations provided the feel of an old Italian grosseria italiana. The pizza was unique and delicious and after everybody had their fill, it was finally time to head to the Richard Rogers theatre to see the 2:00 PM Hamilton show.
Lin Manuel Miranda, writer of the music, lyrics, and book, portrayed Alexander Hamilton and created a unique musical by incorporating an emphasis on rap and rhythm in almost every song. The production highlights major moments in the life of this incredible founding father, including his marriage to Eliza Hamilton, the death of his son, his time as Treasury head, and of course his untimely death due to a duel with Aaron Burr. George Washington (Christopher Jackson), King George (Jonathan Groff), and Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) also made their appearances next to Alexander Hamilton. Overall, the team had a great time being able to reunite with friends and enjoy an incredible show together.
“I’m really looking forward to next season!” said Nora Nugent, one of the senior captains of the team. “Everyone had a great time on the trip and I can tell they will bring a lot of energy to the courtroom.” The 2015-2016 season is sure to be a successful one with the ever-present enthusiasm of each and every member of the team. Here’s to another great season!
