Girls Varsity Bowling

Congratulations to the 12 young ladies on this stage as we celebrate an incredible season filled with strikes, spares, and unforgettable moments. First, I want to take a moment to thank our parents, student spectators, teachers, administrative staff and the Marianist community. We appreciate your dedication and encouragement this year!
This year’s bowling team will go down in school history as the first bowlers to have thrown a bowling ball in our own lanes in the Firebird Center! A moment I, as your coach, will cherish forever.
You’ve spent countless hours practicing, and pushing each other to improve, and stood side by side through both victories and defeats. No matter what the scoreboard said, you showed up with heart, determination, and sportsmanship. Leaving a positive mark in our bowling community.
This season, you’ve grown—not just as bowlers but as individuals. You’ve learned that success isn’t just about high scores; it’s about consistency, teamwork, and always striving to be better than you were yesterday. Whether it was nailing that tricky split, cheering on a teammate, or simply laughing through the challenges or making bowling puns, every moment mattered.
This season your 2024-2025 bowling team ended the regular season 9-1 earning them a spot in the semifinal match. The team won with ease and moved on to the championship against St. John the Baptist. This match was extremely close making each pin count to the very last frame of the 3rd game. Unfortunately, the team lost by a score of 5-4 by only 21 pins. However, I was truly impressed by the sportsmanship displayed by these 12 young ladies at the end of the game knowing they gave it their all.
But don’t worry, our story doesn’t end there, 5 bowlers qualified for our individual championship, Kerri Callahan, Emma Dolan, Chloe Horstmann, Jenna Paladino and Allie Pilock. The individuals were held in Melville and our girls came out strong during the entire competition. Kerri Callahan came away with the win for the third straight year, bowling a 629 series! And a few weeks later 3 bowlers, Kerri, Chloe and Emma travelled to the beautiful area of Buffalo, NY to bowl in the 2nd annual State Tournament.
As we wrap up the season, take pride in what you’ve accomplished. To our seniors, thank you for your leadership and commitment—you’ve left a lasting impact on this team. To our returning players, let’s take what we’ve learned and come back even stronger next season.
No matter where life takes you, the lessons you’ve learned from bowling—patience, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another—will stay with you. So, let’s celebrate this season and look forward to the future with excitement and confidence.
Thank you all for an amazing season, and let’s keep rolling forward!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Emma Dolan
The Commitment Award isn’t just about showing up; it’s about showing up with heart, with determination, and with a mindset to improve—not just for oneself, but for the entire team. This award goes to someone who has consistently demonstrated perseverance, leadership, and a positive attitude, no matter the challenges. This season, Emma Dolan has been the definition of dedication. Whether it was coming to an extra practice, motivating teammates during tough matches, or simply leading by example, she has shown what it truly means to be a Firebird athlete that is committed to this team and this sport. Through highs and lows, she never gave up, always giving 100% effort and pushing everyone around her to be better. Emma has been a member of our team since she was a freshman, and it has been a true honor to see her grow as a not only a bowler but a young lady. I will miss you next year but know you will do great things in your future!
Most Improved Player
Anna Guerra
The Most Improved Award isn’t just about higher scores—it’s about resilience, determination, and the willingness to put in the effort to get better every single day.
This season, Anna Guerra has shown remarkable progress, not just in her technique, but in her confidence, consistency, and overall approach to the game. At the start of the season, she faced challenges like we all do, but instead of getting discouraged, she put in the extra time, asked for advice, and kept pushing herself to improve. She even joined a league!
Anna improved so much I put her in the playoff games and her scores were incredible! Anna has become a key part of this team, proving that with perseverance and the right mindset, anything is possible. I am so proud of how far you’ve come, and I can’t wait to see how you continue to grow in the seasons ahead. Congratulations on earning the Most Improved Award—you’ve truly earned it!
Most Valuable Player
Kerri Callahan
I have the privilege of recognizing a truly outstanding member of our team—the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award. This award isn’t just about having the highest scores or the best technique; it’s about leadership, consistency, dedication, and the ability to elevate everyone around them. This season, Kerri Callahan has demonstrated all of those qualities and more. Whether it was delivering clutch performances in crucial matches, offering encouragement and support to teammates, or setting the standard with their work ethic and commitment, she has been an undeniable force on and off the lanes. Kerri ended the regular season with a 172.5 average, ended the playoffs with a 209.6 average, she won the individual championship for the third year in a row with a 629 series. Kerri qualified for the state tournament and did extremely well! Beyond the numbers, Kerri has been a leader, a teammate, and an inspiration. Her passion for the sport, her drive to improve and adapt, and her unwavering support for others make her more than just a great bowler—it makes her an MVP in every sense of the word. Congratulations, Kerri, on earning the Most Valuable Player Award! I am so incredibly proud of you and grateful to have you as part of this team.

Boys Varsity Bowling

The 2024-2025 Bowling season started off with a huge amount of excitement and positive energy. With the opening of our brand-new bowling lanes, the team could not wait to get started and improve their individual games. Being able to practice five days a week and not have to worry about bus transportation was one of the biggest advantages we had as a team. This excitement spilled over into the regular season as the team took a 3 and 1 record into the Christmas break. After a few close matches against rivals Chaminade and St. Anthony’s after the break, the team ultimately finished the regular season in 4th place. Right before playoffs started, the team had a quick team meeting before one of our practices. We reviewed the scores of some of our previous matches, and the team realized something new. We were much closer to upsetting perennial powerhouses Chaminade and St. Anthony’s than anyone realized. With this new found sense of confidence, the Firebirds stormed into the playoffs ready to make some noise. The team beat Holy Trinity in the Quarterfinals and got matched up against the reigning champions, St. Anthony’s, in the Semifinals. After falling behind early 2 to 0 in the first game with a 154 pin differential, the team had their backs against the wall. Once again, we had a quick team meeting where we reminded ourselves, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The team got their confidence back and came flying back in game 2 to even the score 2 to 2 and minimize the pin differential to only 68 pins. Even though St. Anthony’s was frantically trying to figure out why this wasn’t an easy win like they were used to, we unfortunately lost the Semifinal match up to the defending champs. Of course we wanted to compete for and win the league championship, but all was not lost. We officially put the league on notice that Kellenberg bowling is no laughing matter, and we are here for the long run. Kellenberg bowling is absolutely on the rise and there is nothing that can stop us from reaching that ultimate goal. I would personally like to take a second and thank our lone senior, Connor Volpicello, for an outstanding four years of dedication to our program. Connor was one of our Co-captains this year and lead the team with an average of 173. He was an All-League bowler and he will be greatly missed next year. I would also like to thank all of our parents and supporters throughout the year. Your support, no matter how big or small, did not go unnoticed by myself or the team. Our preparation for next season has already begun and we are excited to ride this momentum going forward and see how far we can go.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Quinlan Peters
This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner is Quinn Peters. Quinn was one of our Co-captains this year and was a quiet leader who lead by example rather than being vocal. Quinn was always willing to help his teammates and did so many times before his coach even noticed that he did. He has always been one to put the team before himself and always enjoyed his teammates success over his own. Quinn finished with the second highest average on the team with a 170 and once again was named an All League bowler. His average was the 10th highest in the league. We are excited to have Quinn back next year and cannot wait to see how far we can go under his leadership.
Most Improved Player
John Sindone
This year’s Most Improved Player is John Sindone. In his first year with the team, John brought a great positive energy and willingness to improve his game. After some ups and downs throughout the season, John finally found his groove near the end of the season. His presence as our sixth starter brought extra confidence to the team as they had a strong playoff run. We are excited to have John back next year and can’t wait to see how much he will continue to improve.
Most Valuable Player
Connor Volpicello
This year’s Most Valuable Player is Connor Volpicello. Connor has been a member of the bowling team for four years, and has consistently improved his average every year. His average of 173 lead the team this year and was the 8th highest in the league. His leadership skills are quite impressive, as he knows how to approach each of his teammates in an individually unique way in order to get through to each of his teammates most effectively. He even took the time to create a unique handshake with his teammates after a strike or spare to help build team chemistry and morale. He is a multi-year All League bowler and narrowly missed out on competing in the State Championships this year. His leadership and personality will be greatly missed next year. The team and coaching staff wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors.

Boys Varsity Track and Field

This year, our boys track and field team delivered an unforgettable season filled with remarkable performances and record-breaking achievements.
Our sprint corps—Nicolas Baldwin, Mario Sanabria, Ethan Linzey, and Damion Gordon Jr.—secured a victory in the 4×200 at the Staten Island Relays. Zach Paggi joined them to shatter the meet record in the 4×400 at the same event. These impressive times held the New York #1 spot for three consecutive weeks, showcasing their dominance on the track.
The middle-distance squad made their mark as well, with Daniel Meenan, Amir Ajenishe, Zach Paggi, and Aidan Hopkins bringing glory back to the distance program by winning the 4×800 at the CHSAA Intersectional Relays. At that same meet, Aidan Hopkins etched his name in the record books by breaking the freshman indoor school record in the mile with an incredible time of 4:39.41. At the NSCHSAA Christmas Classic, Zach Paggi earned a silver medal in the 600-meter run, and Aidan Hopkins stunned the competition by winning the varsity two-mile as a freshman.
Our throwers—Reese Holloway, Will Howe, and Christian Mahfood—were powerhouses this season, leading the way with their remarkable efforts. This year also showcased the rise of the hybrid athlete. Nicholas Rugen (football, track, baseball), Will Kenehan (football, track), Lucas Vamvaketis (track, baseball), and Bryce Pinckeney (football, track) all made major contributions as sprinters. Lucas, in particular, made history by becoming the fifth-fastest 55-meter sprinter in school history—all in just one season of competing! Malachi McCaskill made a triumphant comeback from injury, securing his place as the sixth-fastest 55-meter sprinter in school history.
Sophomore Damion Gordon Jr. shattered the 55 and 60-meter school records, establishing himself as the top short sprinter in the CHSAA. Nicolas Baldwin moved up to #2 all-time for Kellenberg in the 200 meters.
Our team’s dominance continued at the Frosh/Soph League Championship meet, where Damion Gordon Jr., Zach Paggi, Aidan Hopkins, Christian Mahfood, Evan Doyle, Ian Dalton, Will Kenehan, Bryce Pinckney, and Jack Sheridan all became league champions in their respective events. At the Varsity League Championships, Meenan, Ajenishe, Paggi, and Hopkins secured the first 4×800 league championship for Kellenberg in over a decade. This same quartet also earned Kellenberg a return to the historic Millrose Games for the first time in 11 years.
At the upcoming State Federation Championships, Damion Gordon Jr. will compete in the 55-meter dash. He will team up with Oscar Nuñez, Nicolas Baldwin, and Mario Sanabria in the 4×200 relay. We’re thrilled to announce our return to the Nike Indoor Nationals with entries in three events: Aidan Hopkins in the frosh mile, Damion Gordon Jr. in the Championship 60-meter dash, and the team of Nicolas Baldwin, Mario Sanabria, Amir Ajenishe, and Zach Paggi in the Championship Sprint Medley Relay.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Mario Sanabria
Mario Sanabria exemplifies what it means to be truly committed to the Kellenberg Track and Field program. Since his freshman year, Mario has been known for his relentless work ethic and dependability. Whether it was during practice or on race day, he consistently showed up with determination and dedication, making him an indispensable member of the team.
A varsity contributor since his sophomore year, Mario’s versatility on the track has been unmatched. He has proven himself as a jack of all trades, competing in events ranging from the 55-meter dash to the 600-meter run. His willingness to take on any challenge and excel in multiple events has made him a valuable asset to the team.
This season, Mario finished ranked #10 in the 600 meters and #4 in the 300 meters in the NSCHSAA. His hard work and commitment helped our 4×200 relay qualify for the NYSPHSAA State Federation Championships. He also helped our school qualify for the sprint medley relay at the Nike Indoor Nationals.
Mario’s dedication to his craft and his team is truly inspiring. His relentless pursuit of excellence and his willingness to step up wherever needed have set a standard for commitment that will be remembered for years to come.
Most Improved Player
Nicolas Baldwin
Nicolas Baldwin is the final chapter of the Baldwin legacy at Kellenberg, and what a chapter it has been! His steady rise from freshman year to now his senior year has been nothing short of remarkable. This season, Nicolas set personal bests in the open 200 and 300 meters, as well as in the long jump, showcasing his versatility and commitment to excellence. He finished the regular season ranked #4 in the 200 and #5 in the 300 in the highly competitive CHSAA.
His hard work and determination earned him the honor of representing the CHSAA in the 300-meter leg of the Intersectional Distance Medley Relay at the State Federation Championships. Nicolas’s relentless dedication to his craft is evident in every race, and his partnership with Mario Sanabria is nothing short of legendary. Their flawless baton exchanges in the 4×200 relay played a pivotal role in securing the team’s spot at the State Federation Championships.
Nicolas’s journey of improvement and growth has been an inspiration to his teammates. His work ethic and perseverance set the standard for what it means to be truly dedicated. As he closes out his high school track career, Nicolas Baldwin leaves behind a legacy of hard work, passion, and excellence—a legacy his teammates will strive to carry on.
Most Valuable Player
Damion Gordon Jr.
The future is NOW with sophomore sensation Damion Gordon Jr.! Damion rose to the occasion this season, seamlessly filling the gaps left by last year’s graduates. His explosive speed and unmatched determination set the track on fire as he shattered personal bests in the 55, 60, 200, and 300 meters.
Damion dominated the competition, claiming gold medals in the 55-meter dash at the CHSAA Novice Championship, NSCHSAA Christmas Classic, NSCHSAA Sophomore League Championship, and the CHSAA Sophomore Catholic State Championship. He didn’t stop there—he took home silver in the same event at the NSCHSAA Varsity League Championships and the CHSAA Varsity Catholic State Championships, proving he could compete with the best at every level.
This season, Damion broke the school record in the 55-meter dash not once, not twice, but three times, earning him the top spot in the NSCHSAA. He also shattered his own school record in the 60-meter dash, ranking #1 in the CHSAA and an incredible #5 in New York State. His blazing speed earned him a spot at the New York State Federation Championships in the 55-meter dash and the 4×200 relay, as well as a coveted entry to the Nike Indoor Nationals in the 60-meter dash.
But beyond the medals and records, Damion’s work ethic and dedication truly set him apart. His resilience and drive make him not just an MVP on the track, but an inspiration to his teammates and a champion in every sense of the word.

Varsity Swimming and Diving

The Kellenberg boys swimming and diving season was marked by challenges, growth and the harsh reality of a season that didn’t go as planned. Throughout the year, the team faced numerous obstacles both in and out of the pool, leaving them with a final record that didn’t reflect the efforts and resilience shown by every member of the team. The team as a whole did end up having 52 personal best times and 9 season best times. Despite finishing below the expectations the team had, there were moments of growth to build on. The season showed that with the right adjustments and a renewed focus on team chemistry, the swimming and diving team can rise from this difficult season. The lessons learned this year will undoubtedly shape the future of the team as we look to rebuild and come back stronger next season. The coaches and I want to thank all our seniors for their hard work, leadership and dedication, and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Liam Torterella
Liam Tortorella has been a very dedicated swimmer his whole career on the Kellenberg Swim Team. He always would step up when the coaches and I needed him too. He really proved his commitment to the team at champs when we needed a spot filled in the relay. Before that relay we told Liam that we needed him to just do his best and no matter the time he got was going to be fine since we threw him in at the last minute. Not only did Liam swim the relay no problem, he swam and made the best time. This moment really showed the coaches his true commitment to the team.
Most Improved Player
Matthew Pazmino
When Matthew tried out, he had struggled a little at tryouts. The main thing that stood out to us was his compassion and ambition to better himself. Not once did Matthew give up. He dropped the most time from the beginning of the season to the end, and was able to perfect his dive and even his swimming. Matthew never stopped, never skipped a set or even a lap. He knew that if he stopped it wouldn’t be hurting him but hurting his team. Matthew is more than deserving of this award. Most improved really highlights his dedication and hard work throughout the season. It’s clear that he not only made significant progress but also pushed himself beyond his limits, which is exactly what this award is all about. The coaches and I are so proud of the hard work he has to put into this team and we can’t wait to see what next year brings for him.
Most Valuable Player
Santiago Souberbielle
Santiago is a vital member of the swim team. His consistency in hitting state qualifying times for three years in a row is impressive, and it’s clear that his hard work has earned him top placements. Scoring the most points for the team shows his dedication and impact on the overall success of the team, and the fact that he’s won the Vin Harkins award twice is a huge testament to the respect he’s earned from other coaches. Being versatile enough to swim any race without hesitation shows not just skill but a great team-first attitude. It’s no wonder he’s such a standout. His main events were the 500 free and 100 back were his top strokes. Those are two very demanding events, so it’s even more impressive that Santiago excels in both! The 500 free requires endurance and mental toughness, while the 100 back demands speed, precision, and great technique. His ability to perform well in both races shows how well-rounded and versatile he is as a swimmer.

Girls Varsity Basketball
The Girls Varsity Basketball team approached this season with a clear focus and challenge from the coaching staff on the first day of practice: improve by one percent every day. With this mindset, the 15 student athletes that made the Varsity team this year dedicated themselves to rigorous practices aimed at enhancing both individual skills and teamwork. Competing in the most competitive league on Long Island, the team faced tough opponents night in and night out. Their dedication was evident in big team wins over Holy Trinity and Saint John the Baptist, highlighting their grit, growth, and unwavering team spirit. With that said, the team’s success wasn’t solely measured by wins and losses but by their resilience in overcoming challenges and adversity. Each day brought new opportunities for growth, and the team embraced these challenges with determination and perseverance. Off the basketball court, the coaching staff is proud of how the entire team represents the school in other ways, including PREP, XLT, and Retreat Staff. The team continues to live out the legacy of being the true definition of what it means to be a Firebird student-athlete.
The coaching staff wishes nothing but the best for our five seniors as they move on from the “Birds Nest” next year. Always remember that Kellenberg is your home. Thank you to our parents as well for all your support throughout the year! God Bless Firebird Nation!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ryann Merkle
“Talent may make you good, but it is your attitude and work ethic that will make you great.” This quote came to epitomize Ryann Merkle’s time in the Girls Basketball Program over the last four years. Despite facing multiple injuries that might have discouraged many, Ryann always consistently gave her best effort, supported her teammates and pushed herself to improve. Ryann’s passion for basketball and relentless commitment to the basketball program was on display each day at practice and earned the right to call herself one of the hardest workers on the team. Although she was the smallest player on the team, Ryann’s teammates and coaches looked up her as one of the team’s leaders, and more importantly, a great friend to all. The coaching staff will miss Ryann next year, but we know her “story” will be one to tell in the years to come. This year’s recipient of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award is senior, Ryann Merkle.
Most Improved Player
Emma Murphy
“Allow yourself to be proud of the progress you have made especially the progress no one has seen.” Over the last three seasons on Varsity, it has been a pleasure to watch firsthand the progress that Emma Murphy has made both on and off the basketball court. Emma consistently has worked hard to refine her skillset and expanded her impact on the court: not just from a personal level but also with her teammates. Taking on the role of captain this year, Emma proved to be a true leader and became an extension of the coaching staff at both practices and games. Emma approached every challenge with determination, setting an example for those around her. The coaching staff has no doubt that Emma’s drive, attention to detail and work ethic will lead her to “great things” well beyond her time here at the “Birds Nest,”. Emma is certainly someone the program will miss having around next season. This year’s Most Improved Player Award is senior captain, Emma Murphy.
Most Valuable Player
Beth Healy
“You increase your value when you add value to others.” Five years ago, the coaching staff was first introduced to a young Beth Healy at our summer basketball camp. During the week of camp, Beth was the first one into the gym each morning at 8:00 AM and would not put down a basketball until the rest of the camp started drill work. It was at THAT moment, the coaching staff knew they had someone special in their program. In her final season in a Kellenberg basketball jersey, Beth would go on to make this season her best where she led the team in almost every statistical category. While it would be easy to highlight the basketball side of things, Beth’s value to the team cannot be tied to statistics but rather tied to the value she brought to both her teammates and coaching staff. Beth’s love for the game of basketball was contagious and her competitive spirit was on display each day at practice and games. In the years to come, the coaching staff will speak about Beth as someone who was the ultimate competitor and teammate; someone who always looked to put the team before herself; and someone who simply loved Kellenberg and the game of basketball. The coaching staff wishes Beth the best of luck next year as she continues her basketball career at Adelphi University. This year’s Most Valuable Player Award is senior captain, Beth Healy.

I would like to give a huge shout-out to these incredible young ladies for their resilience and adaptability this past indoor season! They pushed through tough practices, enduring a snow-covered track and freezing temperatures, yet STILL emerged victorious at the League Championships!
The triple jump legacy continues with Anabelle Senatus, Sienna Pimentel, and Keierra Ndukwu sweeping 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the third consecutive season! In long jump, Kaitlyn Llompart and Abby Woodruff secured 3rd and 4th, while Maya Hadpawat soared over 4’8” to claim another high jump victory. Maya and Sienna also reached the 55-meter hurdles finals, placing 4th and 5th.
Distance powerhouse Maggie Schiffer took 4th in the 3,000-meter run, while Shannon Pulis showcased her endurance with 5th-place finishes in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. Kaitlyn Llompart’s blazing 43.63 secured 2nd in the 300 meters, and Mackenzie Brown placed 5th in the 600. Mailee Umowski fought through for 4th in the 1,000 meters.
Our relay teams dominated—Kaitlyn Llompart, Kayla Stair, Keierra Ndukwu, and Bianca Jean-Baptiste placed 4th in the 4×200, while Maya Hadpawat, Mackenzie Brown, Regan O’Donnell, and Sienna Pimentel captured GOLD in the 4×400! With these performances, the team secured 2nd place overall.

Anabelle Senatus placed 3rd in triple jump, with Sienna Pimentel close behind in 4th. The 4×2 relay team of Ally Ferrante, Kayla Stair, Keierra Ndukwu, and Bianca Jean-Baptiste placed 5th. Our 4×400 squad of Maya Hadpawat, Kaitlyn Llompart, Mackenzie Brown, and Sienna Pimentel continued their dominance, clocking 4:04.07 to qualify for States.
Each deep divot in the ground is more than just a mark—it’s a testament to relentless training, sweat, and ambition. This dedication came to life as Maria Contreras launched a season-best 27’7.75” in shot put, while Molly Freeman shattered her own record with a 31’10.75” weight throw.
The next generation of distance runners of Julie Baldacchino, Veronica Braut, Charlize Marmol, Hayden Nolan, and Mailee Umowski are proving that they’ll be unstoppable in the years to come.
Each of you is a standout student-athlete! Every single one of you contributed—whether in practice, by securing crucial points, or through unwavering support of your teammates. This season was more than just a collection of races and results—it was a testament to heart, hard work, and the unbreakable Firebird spirit. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause and bring that same energy—if not more—to the outdoor season!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Maya Hadpawat
It is a given that courage goes hand in hand with commitment. To witness this young athlete fall and pick herself up was a profile in courage. As the famous psychologist Dr. Hans Selye once said, “Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.” Training diligently all season to perform in hurdles, high jump, and long sprints, Maya Hadpawat had her signature right attitude going into this year’s prestigious Millrose Games. As the anchor leg in the 4×400 relay, she valiantly tried to make up a deficit, running her fastest 200 (in the 400) ever. The noble effort caught up to her, as she collapsed meters from the finish. The crowd watched as she mustered the strength to get up and finish. That “stress” only made her tougher and bolder. She came back two weeks later to run her fastest leg ever, ensuring her and her teammates a qualifying spot in the New York State Championship Meet. It is for that and all her seasonal efforts that we award Maya Hadpawat this season’s Commitment Award.
Most Improved Player
Sienna Pimentel
As the famous Realist writer Willa Cather once wrote, “There is only one big thing—desire. And before it, when it is big, all is little.” Our Most Improved winner, Sienna Pimentel, came into the season, trained and competed during the season, and finished the season with a palpable “big” desire to be better. Always a competitor, her focus and attitude in training took on a new, improved dimension. The results were clear—she was an All-CHSAA scorer in the triple jump, an NSCHSGAA scorer in the high hurdles, and an All-State runner and qualifier for the Nike National Championships in the 4×400 relay. We are honored tonight to award Sienna Pimentel the Most Improved Award.
Most Valuable Player
Kaitlyn Llompart
This young athlete has always shown promise in the sport of track and field. Due to injuries and setbacks, her brilliant promise had not yet been fully realized. The writer Brendan Francis states, “No yesterdays are ever wasted for those who give themselves to today.” Kaitlyn Llompart truly gave herself to “today.” This season, because of her tremendous focus and consistent, diligent training, that promise was fulfilled. The smooth-striding senior set all sorts of scintillating personal bests—in the 200, 300, 400, and 600. Her 300 was the sixth all-time best run by a Kellenberg female. She long-jumped and scored when her team needed her. Her performance at the Catholic State Championship Meet was one for the records—scoring in the 300 and running a fantastic leg on the 4×400 relay, which secured her and her teammates a spot in the New York State Federation Championship Meet. We are honored to bestow tonight’s Most Valuable Award on Kaitlyn Llompart.

Cheerleading

Winter season competitive cheerleading is a 4 month commitment filled with grueling practices, sidelines at basketball games, long weekends competing, and a journey that transforms teammates into family. Our competitive debut came a little later than planned in early December and this group literally knocked us off our feet with a phenomenal performance earning a bid to Nationals. They placed top 3 at all of our CHSAA regionals throughout the season and finished in an impressive 2nd place in both their divisions. They were able to successfully execute some of the hardest stunts that Kellenberg has ever performed, scoring nearly ten points higher than the previous years teams. We are incredibly proud of the effort, determination, and perseverance that each of these girls put forth all season. They showed up with passion, determination, and heart and they pushed each other to reach their full potential. While our Nationals experience didn’t go exactly as we had hoped in terms of results, which was certainly not for lack of talent, it was still filled with countless memories that we will always remember. To our Seniors, thank you for giving your all. To our families and supporters, thank you for always cheering us on every step of the way. All season, we’ve emphasized how blessed we are to have a dedicated space in the FCAA, but our program’s continued success and reputation is a result of the passion and the fire that you’ve displayed all season long.

Julia Mrakovcic
The most committed Winter Season Varsity cheerleader is a young lady whose commitment has stood out to the coaches for the past two years. She was clearly devoted to the Varsity cheerleading team from day one. This young lady did not miss one single practice, complain during difficult times, or give up during challenging situations. Her positive attitude and encouraging spirit gave her teammates the extra push when they needed it.
Most Improved Player
Sienna Faia
The most improved Varsity cheerleader is a young lady that has worked extremely hard in improving herself in all aspects of cheerleading. She has become one of the best bases on our team and we are very confident in her stunting abilities. We have seen great improvement in her jumps as well as her tumbling. We are very happy to have this opportunity to recognize how far she has come as a cheerleader this season and we can’t wait to watch her continue to grow in the coming years!
Most Valuable Player
Olivia D’Angelo
The most valuable cheerleader for this Winter season is a young lady who proved to be a true asset to the team. Her cheerleading skills did not always come easily and she worked tirelessly to improve herself in her stunts, tumbling, and jumps. We were so proud to see this cheerleader’s true value at the State Championship and at Nationals where she executed all of her stunts to perfection. We are happy to acknowledge her success and can’t wait to watch her continue to thrive next year.

Dance Team
Our winter season can best be summed up in three words: hard work, faith, and family. Hard work is something the Kellenberg Varsity Dance Team knows a lot about. They worked tirelessly to perfect their competition choreography in order to prepare for our local competitions and NDA Nationals. The team not only worked hard at practice but at home as well. They would watch videos of their dances, make corrections for themselves and their teammates, and even learned and perfected new choreography. They started to trust that the work that they were all putting in wasn’t just their own, but for the good of the team. They held each other accountable and made sure effort was never being lost. Their dedication to improving not only themselves but the team as a whole was unmatched. This team had faith that the work would be worth it. They had faith not only in their work but in each other. This was an essential part of their journey. Without faith in each other, they never would have been able to accomplish all of their goals. They worked together and truly became a dance family. In becoming a family, this now allowed them to take their dances to the next level which showed throughout the season. At their local competitions, they were able to place in all three of their dances, getting fantastic feedback from the judges. When they got to NDA Nationals in Orlando, Florida continued to make this program proud and once again placed in the top ten in the nation. To say we are proud of this team is an understatement. We would like to take this moment to thank Mr. Fechtmann and the athletic department for allowing us to attend Nationals and show the nation all the hard work that has been put in all season. We would also like to thank Kellenberg, the administration and everyone involved for our gorgeous new dance studio. The studio has allowed us to improve in ways we never thought would be possible and we are excited for this new chapter in the Kellenberg Dance Program. To all of our dance families, we cannot thank you enough for coming out to support us in Florida and throughout the season. Your support means the world to us and we couldn’t have done it without you. Lastly, we would like to thank each and every one of our dancers for such an amazing season. We are very lucky to have worked with such a dedicated group of young ladies.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ella Pollina
This season’s Most Committed award goes to a dancer that has been a part of our dance family for the last four years, becoming a Varsity member in her Sophomore year. She showed her commitment right from the start when she participated in our summer dance camp. Through the camp, we could see how hard working and dedicated she was to her skills. At practice, she motivates her fellow team members to have a positive attitude while exemplifying hard work and striving to continuously do her best. During our competition season, she would constantly be focused and zoned in on all of her dances to improve herself and the team. As involved as she is in school activities and academics, she shows just as much commitment and hard work on the Varsity Dance Team. This program has been lucky to have her and we know that because of the young woman she has become, her future is extremely bright. This season’s Most Committed Award goes to Senior, Ella Pollina.
Most Improved Player
Brianna Duroseau
This season’s Most Improved Player Award goes to a dancer who continues to prove to her teammates and coaches her abilities to better herself in any situation. who exemplifies what it means to work hard and be a true member of the team. Throughout the season, she put in time and effort to work on her skills and improve her technique. She takes corrections by using them to better her dance abilities. She has been a consistent worker both in and out of the practice room. At practice she is always finding ways to better not only herself, but her teammates as well. When one of her teammates was injured, she stepped in, learned the choreography and competed in our first competition with ease. It is clear that her skills have developed throughout the fall and winter seasons, and she has turned into an even better dancer. She has gained the respect of her teammates and the coaching staff through her commitment to the program. This season’s Most Improved Player Award goes to Junior, Brianna Duroseau.
Most Valuable Player
Maya D’Auge
This season’s Most Valuable Award goes to a senior that truly embodies the values of the Kellenberg Dance Program. As a sophomore, she tried out for the varsity dance team and it was clear that she excelled in her dance abilities. Throughout her first year on the dance team, she worked extremely hard, always trying to improve and help her teammates. This continued throughout her time on the team. She is not only a phenomenal dancer but is somebody that her teammates can go to for technical help, support, and motivation. She has matured throughout her time on the Varsity Dance Team and has become such a strong leader for the team. At practice, she is always motivating her team to work harder and improve. Being a senior, she is a beautiful example of what it means to grow and mature during her time on the team. During our competition season, being in every dance, she strived to make each dance better through her own hard work but also through helping her teammates. She has achieved a great deal in this program, and we are sad to see her leave, but know she will continue to do great things. This season’s Most Valuable Player Award goes to Senior, Maya D’Auge.
Boys Varsity Basketball

Anytime there is a loss, it is human nature to begin to think about the “what ifs” or the “what could have been”. Oftentimes, the energy taken from this never satisfying mindset, does not allow one to focus their attention on all that was. If you were to tell me at the start of the season, our group would beat the defending Catholic state champions on the road in the playoffs, play in front of 3,500 people at Hofstra in the semi-finals and with 3 minutes left have a chance to win the game, and also win the James Greene Sportsmanship – the highest honor officials can give to a basketball program – for the third consecutive year, I would always say Let’s Do That.
The boys varsity basketball team has a tremendous season.. The team was made up of 7 seniors, 7 juniors, and one Sophomore who all came together, as only a Kellenberg athletic team can, in One Heart and One Mind. To start the year, the team won 9 of the first 10 games- Wins came in both counties on Long Island vs. a variety of competitive schools. They were able to win the renowned King Park Preseason tournament by beating the host school and Walt Whitman. They also won the Catholic/Public Challenge in dominating fashion over eventual PSAA champion LuHi Regional just to name a few.
The team entered the gauntlet of the Catholic league with high expectations and a renewed respect amongst league rivals. Every game, the team competed with a chance to win. Oftentimes, facing opponents who were older, more athletic, and sometimes more talented. However, they always stuck together. They followed game plans and neutralized the strengths of other teams with their hard work and connectedness.
Off the court, the team found parallel success. They thrived in the classroom with Honor Roll status, were involved with extracurricular activities, were respected by their peers and faculty alike, and also bonded over prayer and service at the Stella Mara retreat house.
As I speak, across the street, St Dominics, who we previously beat by 30 points, and Saint Anthonys, who we lost to by one possession are competing for the League Championship. To be honest, I would much rather be with our group of guys in that setting right now coaching for Kellenberg’s first ever Championship. However, no matter who wins that game, the champions of our league this year are here in front of us and basketball fans on Long Island know that. This group of players, specifically the seniors, have made Kellenberg basketball relevant again. After our win against Chaminade and our close loss against in the Semi Final, I received hundreds of messages- literally. Here was the common theme:
Hey Coach,
Congratulations on a great season! I enjoyed watching your team play—they played hard and unselfishly. Love your team!
Great toughness and spirit!
You guys do it the right way.
Enjoy the rest of the school year.

Brenden Gharagozlo
Brenden is a coach’s dream. He is unselfish, coachable, and leads by example. His commitment to his teammates, playing the right way, and ability to excel at the little things that lead to success was unmatched. Brenden is the “glue guy” that every successful team needs.
Most Improved Player
Matt Connolly
Matt is one of the hardest workers on this year’s team. His internal drive and motivation allowed him to keep getting better throughout the year, and eventually, be pivotal in big plays towards the end of the season. Matt has the characteristics and personality, to work tirelessly and improve everyday until he meets his goals.
Most Valuable Player

Varsity Hockey

The Varsity Ice Hockey team started the season off with a dominant win over last years champions Monsenior Farrell by a score of 6-0. A great start for a team who only last year, moved up to a highly competitive AA Division. However, with a tough schedule and a relatively young team composed mostly of Juniors and only 5 Seniors we had our work cut out for us this season. The team fought hard this season as we went 4 and 10 and while it may be a rough number to hear, it does not define the team we had. Of those 10 losses, 5 of those hard played games were lost by just one goal. Unfortunately, the season ended early for the Firebirds, falling short of making the playoffs.
On a more positive note, the team is improving and the growth I have witnessed from these players, this season is promising, especially from the sophomore players we moved up to play on the varsity team this year. It is not easy playing up in this division as the players are highly skilled and play a very physical game. Defenseman Joquin DiStephan and Aidan Connor and Forward Michael Parker stepped up big time and showed they belonged on the Varsity Team.
The Seniors this year were few in number but what a cast of characters. I’d like to recognize Hank Soderlund and Sean Roach, the teams Co- Captains this year, and Seniors Robby Palma, Ryan Pirozzi, Jake Raiola, and Owen Bory. It was a pleasure coaching these hockey players and we wish you all the best of luck in your future.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ryan Pirozzi
Ryan Pirozzi is the type of player every coach wants on his team. His “walk softly and carry a big stick” demeanor on the ice translated into the solid defenseman he was. His chirps were far and few between but his physical play did all the talking for him. Ryan was the type of player that, what he lacked in skill, he made up for it in heart. He gave all he had when he played and he went about it quiet way.
Most Improved Player
James Rudzewick
James is a great goal tender. I’ve watched him grow as a player over the past 2 years and as he has physically grown into his pads, he has also matured, becoming a calmer and more composed goalie. I’m looking forward to having James on our team next year as he continues to grow and improve.
Most Valuable Player
Henry Soderlund
Hank is our MVP, he comes to play every game with passion and fire. As a defenseman he does not have the most goals on the team, although he has scored a few for us. Hank has been an exciting player to watch as he takes risks on offense, but always seems to get back and cover the defensive zone. His physical play is a dominant part of the game setting the tone for our team and intimidating the opposing teams offensive players. Hank works hard at improving his own strength and skill for the game and that shows to coaches and is a good example for his teammates.

The Firebird Wrestling Team delivered an unforgettable season, shattering records, taking down top competition, and cementing its place as one of the best teams in program history. For the first time ever, Kellenberg stood atop the podium at the prestigious Battle at the Beach tournament, proving that Firebird Wrestling is a force to be reckoned with. The following weekend, the team also scored a monumental victory over Pope John a top-13 team in New Jersey, showcasing its grit and ability to compete with some of the best programs in the region.
Kellenberg continued its out of state dominance by winning the Newtown Connecticut Dual Tournament, defeating the fifth-ranked team in all of New England. The success did not stop there, as the Firebirds captured titles at both the Solosky Tournament and the Wallkill Dual Tournament, further establishing themselves as one of the strongest teams in the area. In addition to victories on the mat, the team strengthened their bond during an incredible team retreat at Founders Hollow, reinforcing the mindset and camaraderie needed for success. The team stayed locked in after the retreat, winning their dual against St. Anthony’s on senior night.
A testament to dedication, consistency, and perseverance, four wrestlers reached the incredible milestone of 100 career victories, further cementing their legacies in Kellenberg Wrestling history. The Firebirds capped off this historic season with a 12th-place finish at the New York State Federation Championships, competing against the best Catholic, public, and private schools in the state. This season was one that will forever be remembered, but the journey is far from over. The Firebird wrestling team set a new standard of excellence, and with the foundation laid, the program is poised for even greater success. The best is yet to come.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Jonathan Hoffman
This year’s Bernie War Commitment Award goes to Jonathan Hoffman. Jonathan is not only dedicated to his craft as a wrestler but also to every member of the team. After sustaining an injury this season, Jonathan took time to recover but remained deeply involved with the team. He worked tirelessly with younger teammates, helping them develop their skills and improve as wrestlers. Jonathan embodies commitment and selflessness both on and off the mat. His relentless work ethic sets a strong example for his fellow Firebird wrestlers, and his team-first mentality continues to strengthen the program.
Most Improved Player
Luke Chernaski
This year’s Most Improved Wrestler Award goes to Luke Chernaski. From the moment he stepped onto the mat as a young wrestler in the Latin School program, Luke was determined to get better every single day. His relentless work ethic and passion for the sport transformed him into one of the most feared wrestlers on Long Island and across the state.
Luke’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. As a freshman, he recorded just five wins but through sheer dedication, he compiled a total of 103 wins between his sophomore and senior years. Luke was a game changer for the wrestling program, always putting the team first. Whether it meant cutting weight to wrestle in a lower class or stepping up to battle opponents 20 to 30 pounds heavier, Luke never backed down from a challenge. The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of Luke’s incredible growth and unwavering commitment. His impact on the Firebird wrestling program will be felt for years to come.
Most Valuable Player
Elijah Carrington
Elijah Carrington’s exceptional performance this season has earned him the Most Valuable Player Award. His dominance on the mat, unwavering determination, and relentless commitment have cemented his legacy as one of the greatest wrestlers in Firebird wrestling history Elijah led the team with an impressive 43 wins this season, bringing his career total to 115 victories which is tied for third all-time in program history. Match after match, he stepped up to face elite competition, proving time and time again that he belonged among the best. His defining moment came at the New York State Federation Tournament, where he fought through one of the toughest brackets in the tournament and battled back to earn an incredible 5th place finish. Beyond his personal achievements, Elijah elevated everyone around him. In practice, he wrestled with teammates ranging from 116 to 160 pounds, pushing each of them to improve. His work ethic, confidence, and attitude serve as an inspiration to every wrestler in the program. Elijah Carrington didn’t just win matches, he inspired a program. His legacy will fuel the next generation of Firebird wrestlers for years to come. Elijah will continue to wrestle in College at the Division 2 level for Belmont Abbey. The future is bright for him, and we can’t wait to see what he conquers next.
