Varsity Baseball
This past March, fifty-four baseball candidates ranging from Freshman to Seniors tried out for a Varsity baseball team that was coming off of its first NSCHSAA league title since 2017 and first ever state tournament appearance in school history. After graduating 13 Seniors from last year’s team, including our top two starting pitchers and 4 starting position players, the coaching staff knew we’d have a lot of evaluations and decisions to make for the 2026 season. Preseason workouts started in the Fall and continued through the entire winter in the batting cages of the Firebird Center for Arts and Athletics. After 4 days of intense tryouts in March, Kellenberg’s largest baseball roster was formed consisting of 30 driven and motivated young men looking to build on the success of the baseball program here at Kellenberg. To begin the season, after sweeping St. Mary’s three games to zero, the team faced an early setback by dropping a three game series to St. Anthony’s. It was at that exact moment when our season changed. Heading into a much needed bye week, players and coaches really took advantage of the time off to sharpen our axes and learn from our most recent mistakes to be better prepared for the remaining stretch of the season, similar to George Washington’s approach with his soldiers at Valley Forge. From that moment, this team won every single series for the remainder of the season, consisting of series wins over Holy Trinity, St. Dominic, St. John the Baptist, and Chaminade. The team finished with a league record of 11-7, earning a second seed going into the playoffs as well as a first round bye. With wins over Holy Trinity and St. Dominic’s in the winner’s bracket of our double elimination playoff tournament, the Varsity Baseball team had landed back in the championship series for the fourth time in the last 6 years. After winning Game 1 by a score of 11-4 behind a stellar pitching performance from Kevin Prosceo, the bats unfortunately cooled down at inopportune times as the team lost its final two games. Not the ending that we were hoping for of course, but not a season to look down upon by any means. Offensively, this team was led by seniors Jaden Valdez, Richie LaVacca, Anthony Cantara, Nicholas Conway, Griffin Sharkey, and Matt Nies who all played an integral role this season with important contributions from juniors Andrew Noe, Joe DiSanza, Gavin Langner, Justin Diaz, and sophomore Michael Cotto. Every baseball team’s success, however, ultimately lies within their pitching staff. This year’s pitching staff was anchored by Kevin Prosceo, Chris Parisi, and Matt Bitetti, along with a strong supporting cast of Evan Williams, Jack Tallon, Danny Tyrrel, and Kevin Hart. Congratulations to all of our Seniors on a tremendous four years at Kellenberg and we all look forward to your continued successes beyond the game of baseball.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Kevin Prosceo
Senior Kevin Prosceo is a true team player in every definition of the term. As a pitcher committed to Division I Iona University, Kevin naturally became a leader of the Varsity baseball team this year. Although he didn’t play every game due to his role as a starting pitcher, he would be a strong presence within the team in pregame warmups, on the bench during games, and at practices. Kevin had a tremendous season in the most difficult league on Long Island. Statistically, Kevin finished the season with a 4-2 record on the mound, compiling statistics that include a 3.11 ERA in 45.0 innings and a memorable 6 innings pitched in a victory over St. Dominic in Game 1 of the Championship series. Kevin has a bright baseball future ahead and will always be an important member of the Kellenberg Baseball Program.
Most Improved Player
Anthony Cantara
Senior Anthony Cantara came into tryouts this past March with limited Varsity experience after playing behind several seniors on last year’s championship team. Motivated to prove he’s one of the best players on the team and can earn a starting spot, Anthony worked hard from day one, grinding through off season workouts and coming into tryouts ready to be an impact. This season, Anthony had a .311 batting average to go along with a .443 on base percentage, 19 hits, and 19 RBI’s. Anthony was willing to play several positions on the field to stay in the lineup and he did so very effectively. Congratulations to Anthony on a great career at Kellenberg!
Most Valuable Player
Jaden Valdez
Senior Jaden Valdez is the epitome of what Kellenberg looks for in an individual. He’s a hard working and selfless leader who motivates and leads with his words and his actions. Committed to Division II Adelphi University for this coming Fall, Jaden displayed collegiate power and skill throughout his Varsity career. Jaden finished the year with a .379 batting average, .609 on base percentage, and an impressive 7 homeruns in a wood bat league. Despite Jaden’s evident offensive presence, his impact was most importantly felt defensively, where he saved dozens of runs with his exceptional commitment to continuing to get better at first base. The gift of showcasing your skills in both areas of the game in the CHSAA is something special and Jaden has been able to display that over his years as a Kellenberg baseball player. Jaden’s transformation as a leader and a baseball player over the past two seasons at the Varsity level has been remarkable and we couldn’t be more proud of him.
Boys Varsity Crew
The Kellenberg rowing team opened the spring season by battling through the colder weeks of early spring with intense indoor training on the ergs and in the weight room. Before oars even touched the water, the team committed itself to building the strength, the endurance, and the toughness needed for the season ahead. Those early weeks laid the foundation for the work to come, preparing each athlete to make the most of every opportunity once the team returned to oyster bay.
When the season moved onto the water, rowers were met with the familiar challenges of early spring: chilly waters and sometimes unpredictable conditions that demanded focus and resilience. No matter what the day brought, the team continued to show up, adapt, and push forward. That determination carried into a competitive racing schedule, taking on strong fields at Mercer Lake and Cooper River regattas before culminating the season at the New York State Championships, where the team raced against impressive club and scholastic competition.
The regatta was marked by several major highlights. The girls four earned a bronze medal, a tremendous accomplishment against a deep and talented field. The boys novice eight qualified for the grand final, placing them among the top five schools in the state. The boys junior four also delivered a strong performance, finishing in the top ten and continuing to raise the standard for Kellenberg rowing.
More than any single result, however, this season reflected the growing commitment and dedication of the team. Over the past year, the athletes have continued to push themselves, raise the bar, and set new standards for a still young and developing program. The progress made this spring is something to be proud of, and provides exciting momentum heading into next year.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Michael Bellocco
Michael is receiving the Commitment Award for his outstanding dedication, enthusiasm, and leadership throughout his time on the team. Although he joined rowing later than most, he immediately brought an energy and positivity that uplifted those around him. From that point forward, Michael consistently gave 100% effort, whether during the season or through demanding offseason training. His reliability, hard work, and commitment to improvement led to his appointment as team captain, a position he not only earned, but excelled in. Throughout the season, Michael went above and beyond for his teammates while continuing to grow as a leader, making a lasting impact on the program.
Most Improved Player
Adrian Riche
Adrian is receiving the Most Improved Award for the rowing team after an incredible season of growth and development. After taking a short hiatus following his freshman year on the team, he returned this season stronger and more motivated than ever. His hard work resulted in an impressive nearly 90-second improvement in his 2k time, a testament to his dedication and perseverance. On the water, Adrian has greatly refined his technique and is continuing to develop into a talented young rower. We’re excited to see how he continues to grow and progress over the next few years.
Most Valuable Player
Gavin Roldan
Gavin is receiving the MVP Award for his incredible dedication, leadership, and indispensable role in keeping the team running smoothly. He has been the driving force behind the team’s logistics, always ensuring equipment is prepared for travel, troubleshooting issues when things go wrong, and handling every challenge with outstanding effort and professionalism. Gavin’s flexibility and willingness to help wherever needed have made him an invaluable asset, whether that meant taking out whichever boat required his expertise or even stepping in as a rower when the team needed him. His leadership, reliability, and ability to take charge have had a tremendous impact on the program, and his presence on the team will be deeply missed.
Boys Varsity Golf
This year’s Boys Golf Team was one of the best in school history. The team saw the schools first ever NSCHSAA Player of the Year in Jude Martucci and had one of the best overall lineups in the league. Ryan Dennean made the All League Team by posting one of the lowest overall scores in the league. Tim Meizoso qualified for the the CHSAA State Tournament by shooting a 79 at the league tournament. The team saw two freshman start in the lineup in Declan Stack and Sebastian Lira-Bayona. The emergence of Dan Natale and his putting stats shocked many of the coaches in the league. With all the talent on the team, it was the team’s character that will be forever remembered. The 3rd place Firebirds were a pleasure to coach and be around. Led by senior Eamon Cormican, our phiosophy of “nobody has more fun than us” continues to thrive! Congratulations fellas on an incredible season!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ryan Dennean
Ryan worked hard all Summer caddying at Garden City Country Club. I believe being around the game all Summer helped him improve to becoming an all league player and our number 2 golfer. Congratulations to a truly great kid and golfer Ryan Dennean. Coach Ward would have been a big fan!
Most Improved Player
Dan Natale
Dan could always hit the ball far, but it was his short game improvement that led to his outstanding season. Dan turned himself into the best putter on the team and one of the biggest surprises in the league. Dan putted so well that he finished third on the team in scoring averaging 3.2 over par. Absolutely remarkable improvement from last year!
Most Valuable Player
Jude Martucci
The schools first ever NSCHSAA Player of the Year had the lowest scoring average in the league. Jude finished the league tournament tied for first place. You can’t really say enough good things about Jude. As good as a golfer that he is, he is every bit as good of a person. Mature beyond his years and fun to be around, Jude will be remembered as one of the schools best golfers ever!

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
The 2026 varsity boys lacrosse season reminded us that adversity does not define a team – how a team responds to adversity is what truly matters most. Throughout the year, our players continued to work, compete, and represent the program with pride despite the challenges they faced along the way. Offseason preparations began in November, with players consistently attending weekly practices, early morning workouts, and Friday morning shootarounds before school. Many players also competed in winter leagues against top competition on Long Island, including games at Stony Brook University.
This spring, our team competed against what was arguably one of the toughest schedules on Long Island, including matchups against 6 of the top 15 teams in New York State and 2 top-10 teams from Connecticut. Along the way, the team earned several impressive victories, including an exciting overtime win over Pleasantville, and continued to battle through several difficult close losses. In each game, our players showed toughness, composure, and the ability to compete at the highest level.
Ultimately, we came up short, losing the Intersectional Championship Game to eventual State Champion Iona Prep. However, the coaching staff is proud of the effort and commitment shown by every player throughout the season. Our players embraced their roles on the team and continued to battle all season long. Although we did not attain the results we had hoped for, our overall goal as a program is to foster a love of the game of lacrosse and, more importantly, help build strong, passionate young men of faith – a goal that I strongly believe we achieved.
We want to thank our seniors for their leadership and dedication to the program and wish them the best of luck in the future.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Jamison Heneghan
This year’s Commitment Award winner is a student who consistently displayed one of the core values that the coaching staff asked of every player throughout the season: consistency. Jamison showed poise in the face of adversity and a steadfast commitment to his teammates and the program as a whole. When things were not going our way, we could always count on Jamison to be the quiet, hard worker he has always been, never pointing fingers at others, but instead working to make the team better through his own actions.
He was the first to pick up a teammate after a mistake and the first to celebrate with them after a goal. Jamison led not through words, but through his attitude, work ethic, and selflessness each and every day.
Congratulations, Jamison, and thank you for your leadership, commitment, and dedication to your teammates and this program.
Most Improved Player
Patrick Hawkins
This year’s Most Improved Player Award goes to someone who, at this time last year, was fifth on the depth chart at a completely different position. This season, Patrick made the transition to defensive midfielder and took full advantage of every opportunity presented to him, working relentlessly to improve each and every day.
Patrick is the perfect example of a player who, as a junior, could have become complacent with his circumstances, but instead chose to continue working, competing, and believing in himself. Through his work ethic and determination, he transformed himself into one of our top defensive midfielders and one of the most reliable players on the field by the end of the season.
Congratulations, Patrick, and thank you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to improving yourself and helping the team succeed.
Most Valuable Player
Gavin Antonik
The Most Valuable Player Award is undoubtedly the most difficult award to give out this year, with many players deserving recognition for the value they brought to the team. However, when thinking about the recipient, there is no player who consistently demonstrated more value to the program than Gavin.
As a captain and our faceoff midfielder, Gavin did everything the coaching staff asked of him from November through May. Whether it was helping organize offseason workouts, picking teammates up when they were struggling, or keeping the team motivated through both his words and relentless work ethic, Gavin’s impact was felt every single day.
On the field, Gavin battled week in and week out against some of the top faceoff midfielders in New York State and the country, never backing down from the challenge. Off the field, he led by example through his toughness, accountability, and commitment to the program. His leadership and consistency helped set the standard for what it means to be a part of this team.
Congratulations, Gavin, and thank you for everything you have given to this program as a player, teammate, and leader.

Boys Varsity Track and Field
In the first few meets of the season, despite cold temperatures and rainy conditions, the team delivered several outstanding performances. Daniel Beyrouty won gold in the shot put at the North Shore Invitational, while Christian Mahfood broke the pentathlon record at the Knight Time Invitational. The sprinting core, led by Damion Gordon Jr., Will Kenahan, Ian Dalton, Chuks Odiaka, and Jaden McLeod, continued its success from the winter season with strong showings at the Ed Jennings Jamboree, the Easter Classic, and the New York Relays.
These early meets served as important building blocks for the championship portion of the season, which began at the 130th Penn Relays. The Distance Medley Relay team of Zach Paggi, Ethan Linzey, Amir Ajenishe and Aidan Hopkins was invited to compete in the Championship of America. In what has been called “the fastest DMR in Penn Relays history,” the quartet ran 10:05.2. Not only did that performance break the school record they had set just a few weeks earlier, but it also ranked as the ninth-fastest time in New York State history and placed them among the top 50 teams in United States history.
At the league championship, the boys delivered the greatest team performance in program history, scoring 86 points. Sixteen athletes earned All-League honors, many in multiple events, and the team captured nine gold medals — more than any other school at the meet.
That success came from every area of the roster. In the throws, Daniel Beyrouty earned All-League honors in the shot put. In the jumps, Nicholas Perez, Christian Mahfood, and Jordan Porter became the first trio to sweep the high jump in Kellenberg history. Christian Eleazar scored in the long jump, while Mahfood added a surprise victory in the 110-meter hurdles. The sophomore quartet of Leif Estrella, Justin Fanfan, Evan Dalton, and Alex Diegnan also scored important points, further proving the depth of the team’s youth movement.
On the track, Damion Gordon Jr, Ethan Linzey, Amir Ajenishe, Zach Paggi, and Aidan Hopkins won individual championships. All came back on top relays. The 4×400 of Ethan Linzey, Christian Mahfood, Leif Estrella, and Evan Doyle ran a season best getting a sliver medal. Aidan was named MVP of the meet.
Then, this past weekend, four of our athletes were crowned Catholic State champions and once again qualified for the Federation Championship. Aidan won gold in the 1600 meters, breaking a 41-year-old school record in the process. Zach captured the 800-meter title, and then joined Aidan, Amir, and Dan Meenan to defend their 4×800 title from the winter season.
The team’s season is far from over, as the boys now look to once again earn All-State and All-American honors.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Michael Gornstein
Michael joins the long line of Gornsteins to complete all twelve seasons of cross county and track and field across his four years at Kellenberg. On the track, Michael made sure his senior year was his best. From cross country through the spring season, he set personal bests in nearly all of his events, culminating in a double PR at his final varsity championship. As a teammate, Michael has been one of the most loyal and dependable athletes we have had the privilege to coach. Whether he was hosting pasta parties, traveling with the team across the East Coast even when he was not competing, or simply showing up to support his teammates, Michael was always there for the program. His graduation will leave a major hole in the team that will easily be filled.
Most Improved Player
Ethan Linzey
Coming into the year, the coaching staff was unsure of Ethan’s intentions when it came to track. Between Honor Society, college visits, multiple clubs, and vying for Valedictorian, Ethan already had his hands full. So when he decided to come back, we could hardly contain our excitement.
Ethan competed all four years of high school, but this year was truly his peak. Earning All-League honors during the winter season was only a sneak peek of what was to come in the spring. With only a few days’ notice, Ethan was thrust into the biggest race of his life at the 130th Penn Relays. Tasked with running the 400-meter leg on the team’s Distance Medley Relay, Ethan suddenly found himself competing against 15 of the fastest teams in the country.
Fresh off a Latin Club trip, he ran his fastest race of the season and became part of one of the fastest relays in United States history. Building off that momentum, Ethan went on to become League Champion in the 400 meters and will look to continue his success next month at New Balance Nationals.
Most Valuable Player
Aidan Hopkins
Alongside teammate Zach Paggi, Aidan has formed one of the most formidable duos not only in school history, but in CHSAA history. Coming off a superb cross country and winter track season, where he earned All-State and All-American honors in multiple events, it would have been easy to think he had already reached the peak of his year.
Not for Aidan.
He anchored the team’s Distance Medley Relay at the 130th Penn Relays with a remarkable 4:13 split, helping lead the quartet to one of the fastest times in United States history. He followed that performance by becoming both the League Champion and Catholic State Champion in the 1600 meters, winning in dominating fashion, breaking the school record and then lowering it the following week. He was also a key leg on the 4×800 relay that captured both league and Catholic State titles. The NCHSAA would go on to honor him as the league’s MVP.
Aidan’s mile time at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship broke a 41-year-old meet record and currently stands at No. 2 in New York State. Over the next few weeks, he will look to add even more to an already historic resume as he pursues All-State and All-American honors once again.

Veronica Beckenhaupt
Veronica is receiving the Commitment Award in recognition of her unwavering dedication and consistency throughout her three years and six seasons on the team. Even after suffering a preseason injury, she remained determined to contribute in any way possible, putting the needs of the team first. This season, she showed tremendous flexibility by primarily stepping into the role of coxswain, helping guide the team through a transition period with many younger rowers taking on new responsibilities. Veronica’s selflessness and steady commitment have set a powerful example for her teammates.
Most Improved Player
Maeve Reilly
Maeve is receiving the Most Improved Award in recognition of the tremendous progress she has made in her first season on the team. Since beginning rowing this year, she has made impressive strides in both her speed and technique, nearly dropping a full minute from her 2k time from the start of the season to the finish. On the water, she quickly adapted to the complex rowing motion and showed a strong willingness to learn. Maeve has been very receptive to coaching, consistently using feedback to improve. We are excited to see her talent continue to develop in the future.
Most Valuable Player
Anna Prince
Anna is receiving the MVP Award after making an incredible impact in just her first year on the team. She has shown not only a strong commitment to her own growth, but also a genuine dedication to the success of her teammates. Whether on the erg or on the water, Anna leads by example, always giving her full effort and setting a high standard for those around her. She expects the best from herself and her teammates, but does so with such a positive and encouraging attitude that she lifts everyone up. Anna has quickly proven herself to be a phenomenal teammate, competitor, and example for the entire program.
Girls Varsity Golf
As the 2025-26 Girls’ Golf team’s season began, the girls on the team were on a quest, a quest to improve their abilities, a quest to establish themselves as essential members of the team, and a quest to demonstrate that our team is one of the best team in the NSCHSGAA. As all of my senior English students know, in class I emphasize the importance of the quest as an important theme in literature and also life. Quests are a search for something valuable, whether it is a person, an abject, or an abstract quality. There are certain times in our team’s quest this season in which players may have been distracted for a moment, but this team always focused on the job at hand in a practice or a match. The quest can also bring a greater understanding of oneself as some of the players have learned a great deal about what is needed to be a good or great player on the team. One final thought about quests is that sometimes quests are never completed. With Newsday highlighting one of our freshmen golfers to watch during the season, the expectations for this team grew as the season began. The team racked up wins over opponents such as St. John the Baptist, Holy Trinity, Our and Sacred Heart, but the ultimate test on our quest this season was to beat a co-educational high school of the Franciscan order in Huntington. Both matches against that team were difficult losses, but those losses were character builders for the playoffs. As the #2 seed in the playoffs, the girls easily dispatched St. John the Baptist in the semifinals and left the memory of an earlier season tie in the distance. A third match of the season against that co-educational high school of the Franciscan order in Huntington was scheduled for the championship. Although the quest for another team championship was not completed, the girls can take pride in their growth as golfers this season. Ladies, be sure to enjoy your off season, but if you go to the beach or go hiking in the woods, don’t be afraid to take a club or two and some golf balls with you for some practice.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Gabby DeBono
Gabby DeBono demonstrates to her teammates and her classmates the definition of commitment. Injured during the first trimester, Gabby was either at practice watching the team or the physical therapist working on her arm. She was going to do whatever it took to get on the golf course this season. Getting on the course was goal number one, and she finally got in a match at the end of April. Her second goal of the season was qualifying for the League Tournament, and she accomplished that goal in her first match. Gabby represents the characteristics of stamina and fortitude that are sometimes overlooked in the game of golf.
Most Improved Player
Orla Cormican
Orla Cormican had played three seasons on the team as a match player until this year. Although the challenge of playing stroke golf seemed intimidating at the beginning of the season, Orla settled right into her new role on the team, and she imparted plenty of wisdom on her freshman golfing partner, Eloise Alveari. Orla also learned to take her game to new heights this season because she did something this year she hadn’t previously accomplished: being named to the All-League team and qualifying for the League Tournament and the State CHSAA Tournament. Orla has been a great member of this team, and her influence on her teammates will bear much fruit in the future as she graduates from Kellenberg Memorial.
Most Valuable Player
Eloise Alveari
Eloise Alveari is a freshman talent who will only get better as time goes on. She moved up to the #1 position after one match, and she qualified for the All-League team after just two matches. I thought I might have thrown Eloise into deep water by putting her in the top position in the lineup, but she had no problem swimming in those waters and with her play on the golf course she hinted to the other players, “Come on in! The water is great!” In other words, we can all rise to a new potential. Eloise was also the only player in the league this season who was able to get a point from a St. Anthony’s player when she tied her opponent in the championship match. She took third place at the League Tournament, third place at the CHSAA State Tournament, and she will represent Kellenberg Memorial as part of the CHSAA team at the New York State Federation Girls’ Golf Tournament at the Bethpage Red Course. Her stock as a golfer is rising, so the team and I can’t wait to see the heights she will rise to.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse
The 2026 girls varsity lacrosse season will be remembered as one of the most successful and exciting campaigns in program history. Combining veteran leadership, resilience, and emerging young talent, the team made its first appearance in the NSCHSAA Championship game in over a decade, marking a major milestone for the program.
Throughout the season, the team proved it could compete with some of the best programs on Long Island. Signature nonleague victories against Wantagh and Long Beach showcased the group’s talent and determination, while a hard-fought battle against Massapequa — one of the top 10 teams on Long Island — demonstrated the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
The road to the championship was filled with unforgettable moments. In one of the most thrilling games of the season, the team defeated league rival Sacred Heart in an instant-classic triple overtime victory, displaying grit, composure, and relentless effort under pressure. Building on that momentum, the team earned a decisive semifinal win over St. Dominic, punching its ticket to the NSCHSAA Championship game and cementing its place among the league’s elite.
A key factor in the team’s success was the return of many experienced starters who provided leadership and consistency throughout the season. At the same time, the emergence of several young players brought energy, depth, and excitement to the roster. The combination of experienced upperclassmen and rising talent not only fueled this year’s championship run, but also laid the foundation for continued success in the years ahead.
The 2026 season was more than just wins and accomplishments — it was a statement about the growth of the program, the strength of the team culture, and the bright future ahead for varsity girls lacrosse. We thank our five seniors for their years of dedication to our program, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for Firebirds lacrosse!

Kate Maier
Kate has been a dedicated three-year member of the team and one of the most unselfish players on the field. A quiet leader who never sought recognition or boasted about her accomplishments, she consistently put the team first in every situation. This year, she organized offseason workouts to help keep the team connected and prepared, while also playing through injury without ever complaining or missing a practice. Her commitment was perhaps best demonstrated when she chose to play in a game on the same day as a family obligation, ultimately scoring the game-winning goal in triple overtime. Kate’s leadership, toughness, and selflessness have made a lasting impact on her teammates and program.
Most Improved Player
Makaela Brennan
Makaela has earned this year’s Most Improved Player award due to her dedication, versatility, and commitment to becoming a better teammate and player every day. She was always willing to play wherever she was needed and consistently looked for ways to advance her skills. She strived to improve in every area of the game. Throughout the season, her speed on the draw circle and movement on attack showed tremendous growth, and she developed into a reliable presence in our midfield as well as an emerging leader for the team. We are excited to see the impact she will continue to have on the program as a senior next year.
Most Valuable Player
Mairead O’Sullivan
This season, Mairead proved herself to be an asset of immeasurable value. A three-year starter and the team leader in points, she consistently made an impact on every game, whether by scoring goals or creating opportunities for her teammates with assists. She was the backbone of our attack and could also be counted on in the draw circle whenever we needed help gaining possession. Despite her individual success, including reaching the incredible milestone of 100 career points as a junior, Mairead always put the team first and cared more about team success than personal statistics. Her confidence allowed her to contribute anywhere on the field, while her positive attitude and leadership as a junior captain set the tone for the entire program. With another season ahead of her, we are excited to see her continue leading the team next year.
Girls Varsity Track and Field
This season, the Lady Firebirds track and field team proved that you do not need the largest team to make the biggest impact. From the very beginning, the girls competed with toughness, confidence, and heart, consistently showing they could compete with some of the top programs on Long Island.
The season featured outstanding performances across every event group. Our throwers were led by Alanna Pepe, Marley Dyasi, Paris Boissard, and Molly Freeman. In the jumps, Abigail Woodruff and Keierra Ndukwu delivered major championship performances throughout the spring. The distance squad, led by Hayden Nolan, Maddy Forquignon, Brooke Corbett, and Mailee Umowski, battled through some of the toughest races of the season while continuing to achieve personal bests.
The hurdle crew became one of the strongest groups in the league, with Maya Hadpawat, Harper Lollo, Christina Cyrus, and Gabriella Perrotta consistently scoring major points in championship meets.
This season also showcased one of the program’s strongest young cores in recent years. Christina Cyrus had an outstanding freshman season, earning multiple championship medals and Outstanding Performer honors, while several underclassmen stepped into major varsity roles and helped elevate the team all season long.
At the center of it all was junior standout Maya Hadpawat, who put together one of the most remarkable seasons in program history. Maya broke a 16-year-old school record in the 400 meters, earned multiple championship titles, was named Track MVP at the Intersectional Championships, and qualified for the New York State Federation Meet alongside Abigail Woodruff.
What made this team special, however, was not just the medals or records — it was the way the girls competed for one another. Whether it was athletes stepping into extra events for team points, relays delivering in pressure moments, or teammates supporting one another through long championship weekends, this group built a culture of resilience, belief, and team pride.
The championship season reflected exactly who this team was. The Lady Firebirds finished as Sophomore Intersectional Champions, League Championship Runner-Up, and 3rd Place at the Intersectional Championships. Those accomplishments were earned through hard work, sacrifice, and dedication all season long.
To the seniors, thank you for your leadership and commitment over the past four years. To every athlete on this team, thank you for the pride, competitiveness, and heart you brought to the program this season.
Congratulations on an unforgettable year for Lady Firebirds track and field.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award

This season’s MVP award goes to an athlete who consistently set the standard for excellence every time she stepped onto the track. Maya Hadpawat proved all season long that she is one of the premier athletes in the state, combining talent, determination, leadership, and versatility in every competition.

Varsity Softball
The 2026 Varsity Softball Season began with snow piles on the field as remnants from a late February blizzard. Through hard work, determination, and a committed team concept, the Firebirds began to melt away the snow and pave a path toward Spring. Early in the season the team made its annual retreat to Founders Hollow, and for 24 hours no member of the team, player or coach, was allowed to utter the word: softball. Team bonding and friendships began immediately. With many new players and some key returning players, the team began to take shape despite the loss of Senior, Michaela Ressegger, whose knee injury from the basketball season prevented her from playing, and challenged the team to fill the void left by her physical absence.
The first half of the season saw the team struggle through a very demanding league and non league schedule. In short, 12 of the 23 total regular season contests were played against top 20 NYS ranked teams. To finish that schedule with 15 wins and 8 losses is a remarkable accomplishment. The team notched key victories against St. Joseph by the Sea, Massapequa, East Islip and St. Anthony’s. On April 10 the team raised more than $3,200.00 for the Nassau Suffolk Autism Society of America in a nighttime, non league game against Archbishop Molloy High School. Last week in the semi finals the team emerged victorious in a 3 game series against Holy Trinity winning by scores of 3-0 and 1-0. No Holy Trinity player reached third base in either game, and the pitching duo of Hailey McGreevy and Molly Silecchia allowed only 5 hits, one walk, and struck out 18 in 14 innings of work. These victories launched the team into the League Championship against St. Anthony’s. The coaches want to wish the six senior players: Gianna Abbenda, Anna Anzalone, Hailey McGreevy, Michaela Ressegger, Molly Silecchia, and Lexi Zaremba much continued success and happiness in their future endeavors. Firebirds on three, Family on 6!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Alexis Zaremba
The 2026 Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner for the Varsity Softball Team is Alexis Zaremba. Returning from a disappointing junior year, Lexi arrived at the first day of tryouts as a different player. Her enthusiasm, hustle and positive spirit reigned supreme. Her energy was immediately contagious to her team mates, and simultaneously this renewed spirit impacted her performance on the field dramatically. Entering the finals, Lexi has the second highest batting average on the team at .453. She has 6 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homeruns, 25 RBI’s and 14 stolen bases along with 22 runs scored. Additionally, she has played a flawless outfield and on some key occasions, solidified the infield defense by playing first base. Most importantly, she has taken many of the younger players under her Firebird wing and mentored them into better and more mature athletes all season long! Congratulations to the 2026 Varsity Softball Team Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner Lexi Zaremba.
Most Improved Player
Julia Candelario
The 2026 Most Improved Player on the Varsity Softball Team is Julia Candelario. At the conclusion of tryouts it appeared that Julia would be spending a fair amount of time as a catcher. However, as the team materialized in March practices, her outstanding footwork and glovework were needed at first base. Julia welcomed the challenge and survived many boot camp practices at first base. Then, as the season wore on, the team shifted several personnel in the infield and Julia was asked again to transition her role and work out as a second baseman. More boot camps ensued and she has played a stellar second base for the team. Additionally, she has worked very hard on the offensive side of the ball, improving her contact rate dramatically. She also has become a dependable and dangerous small ball weapon at the bottom of the Firebird lineup. Throughout all the changes Julia has maintained a positive and team oriented attitude, always bringing energy and good vibes to her peers. Congratulations to Julia Candelario on being the 2026 Most Improved Player on the Varsity Softball Team.
Most Valuable Player
Molly Silecchia
The MVP for the Varsity Softball team this year is a player who leads the team in batting average, .537, slugging %, .940, on base % .602, hits, 36, runs scored, 37, doubles, 8, home runs, 5 and RBI’s, 30. Molly Silecchia has played the majority of the season as the starting shortstop, but she has also earned 5 wins in the circle, one save, struck out 49 batters in 34 innings pitched, and has a team leading ERA of 2.26. What cannot be quantified is the work ethic and determination she brings to every practice. Never resting on her accomplishments, Molly leads with fire and hard work every second of every day. In the intensely contested semifinal series against Holy Trinity, it was Molly who drove in the winning run in game one, and she scored the one and only run in the series clinching game 2 while throwing a complete game 2 hitter with 11 strikeouts. Enough said! Congratulations to Molly Silecchia on being the 2026 Varsity Softball MVP.

As the curtains close on our high school tennis season, we reflect on a journey filled with growth and camaraderie. The 2026 boys varsity team saw many young players try out this year, and they made tremendous strides throughout the season.
The season was filled with many challenges, but those challenges helped the boys grow not only as tennis players, but also as young men. They came in every day with positive attitudes and welcomed each challenge they faced.
These athletes are not just tennis players — they are exceptional individuals. Their dedication, positivity, and willingness to learn made every practice and match a joy. From mastering forehands to building lasting bonds, they grew both in skill and character.
Lastly, thank you to the parents, athletes, and fellow coaches for all of your support throughout the season.

Leo was a very committed player. He attended every practice and was always looking to improve, while also cheering on and encouraging his teammates to get better. He consistently came in with a positive attitude and stayed focused on what he needed to do to improve.
Leo was present at every practice, match, and team event, fully committed not only to himself, but also to his teammates. He was often the first person to cheer everyone on and support the team.

Most Improved Player
Robert Cristiano
From the start of the season to the final day, Rob improved greatly. He showed up every day looking to get better, asking questions and working to improve all aspects of his game.
He worked hard every day to make sure he continued improving — and he certainly did. Rob made tremendous progress with his net presence and groundstrokes throughout the season.
The coaches are excited about how much Robert improved this year and are looking forward to seeing what next season will bring.
Most Valuable Player
Caleb Roach
The Most Valuable Player award goes to our first singles player, Caleb Roach. Caleb is a tremendous talent and an outstanding teammate who is always willing to help others in any way he can.
Although he was only a freshman, Caleb played an important role on the team. He handled the pressure well and impressed everyone we faced this season with his excellent skills and composure on the court.
One of Caleb’s most impressive performances came during the novice tournament. He played three matches and dominated in all of them, defeating his opponents in a variety of ways while losing only six games total throughout the tournament.
This is why Caleb Roach is our Most Valuable Player.
Varsity Volleyball
The 2026 season will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in the history of the Kellenberg Memorial High School Boys Volleyball program. Over the past four years, the Firebirds have established themselves as one of New York State’s elite programs, compiling an incredible 48-8 record while making three consecutive league championship appearances. This season, that success was finally capped off with the program’s 10th NSCHSAA Championship.
The journey was far from easy. Kellenberg opened the season with a shaky 1-2 start, suffering back-to-back losses to rivals Chaminade High School and St. Anthony’s High School. After graduating NSCHSAA Player of the Year Ryan Exarhos along with seven starters, many questioned how quickly the team could reload. Instead of making excuses, the Firebirds responded with resilience.
A turning point came during a program practice led by recent New York State Hall of Fame Coach Kathy Von Schoernmarck. From that moment on, the team began to come together, embracing a gritty identity that defined the entire season.
The Firebirds battled through multiple thrilling five-set victories over St. Francis Preparatory School, St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, and St. Anthony’s High School to finish 10-2 in league play and secure second place in the standings. Along the way, Kellenberg earned an impressive 3-1 victory over state powerhouse Chaminade High School.
By playoff time, the Firebirds were playing their best volleyball. After defeating St. Anthony’s High School in a hard-fought semifinal, Kellenberg advanced to the NSCHSAA Championship for the third straight year, once again facing five-time defending champion Chaminade High School.
In a match that perfectly captured the heart of this team, the Firebirds once again came from behind to defeat the Flyers in five sets. Kellenberg dominated the deciding set 15-8 to capture the NSCHSAA Championship and secure the program’s historic 10th league title.
The victory also earned the Firebirds another milestone, becoming the first boys volleyball team in school history to compete for a New York State Championship. Kellenberg ultimately finished 3rd in New York State.
Most importantly, this season showcased the toughness, unity, and resilience of a team that never stopped believing in one another. The players and coaches would like to thank the fans, parents, alumni, and faculty members whose support made this unforgettable season possible.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ryan Bargellini
The setter is the quarterback of a volleyball team, controlling the tempo, leading the offense, and putting teammates in position to succeed. That is exactly what Ryan did throughout his outstanding career at Kellenberg Memorial High School.
Ryan developed into one of the top setters in the league, finishing his career with over 1,000 assists while setting a new school record with an incredible 59 assists in a single match. On the biggest stage, he delivered one of the greatest performances in championship history, recording 8 aces in the NSCHSAA Championship match while earning Tournament MVP honors.
What makes Ryan’s accomplishments even more impressive is his journey. Entering the program as a defensive specialist and club libero, he transformed himself into an elite setter through hard work, leadership, and a tremendous understanding of the game. His ability to lead, communicate, and compete every day made him the heart of this team.
As a captain, Ryan set the standard for toughness, energy, and selflessness, helping guide the Firebirds to a historic championship season. Next year, he will attend University at Buffalo Honors College to study Pharmacy.
Most Improved Player
Joseph Burke
Having two dominant outside hitters can completely change a volleyball team, and Joe proved to be a difference-maker for the Kellenberg Memorial High School Firebirds this season.
In his very first year playing volleyball, Joe made an incredible transition from basketball to the court, using his athleticism and explosive jumping ability to become a true force on the outside. He finished the season with 163 kills, including two separate matches with 18 kills, while consistently stepping up in the biggest moments. His game-winning kills in fifth-set victories against St. Anthony’s High School and St. Francis Preparatory School helped define the Firebirds’ championship run.
What made Joe even more valuable was his versatility. He developed into a complete six-rotation player, contributing not only offensively, but also in serve receive and defense. Combined with his work ethic, coachability, and positive attitude, Joe quickly became an essential part of the team’s success.
Next year, Joe will attend St. John’s University to study Accounting. Joe, your impact on this program in such a short time has been tremendous, and your future is incredibly bright.
Most Valuable Player
Michael Tagios
The outside hitter is one of the toughest and most important positions in volleyball. It demands leadership, versatility, and the ability to deliver in the biggest moments — and that is exactly what Michael did all season long.
Michael established himself as one of the elite players in New York, earning the prestigious NSCHSAA Player of the Year Award, becoming only the 6th player in Kellenberg Memorial High School history to receive the honor. His ability to completely take over matches was unmatched, highlighted by dominant performances of 29 and 23 kills in key victories throughout the season. He also anchored the team defensively, tallying an incredible 152 blocks this year while finishing his career with an astounding 500 kills.
What made Michael special was not just his offense, but his complete game. Whether attacking, blocking, defending, or taking on the opponent’s top hitter, he embraced every challenge with confidence and composure. His calm leadership, positive energy, and relentless work ethic helped drive the Firebirds to a historic championship season.
As a four-year member of the program, Michael leaves behind a legacy as one of the winningest and most accomplished players in program history. Next year, he will attend Pennsylvania State University to study Civil Engineering.
Michael, your impact on this program has been tremendous, and you will truly be missed.
