On Sunday February 28, 2016, Kellenberg Memorial High School hosted The Marianist March Madness Tournament. The basketball tournament, which was organized by St. Martin De Porres Marianist School, was successful on many levels. In addition to the good sportsmanship and play exhibited by the teams, all teams participated in a used sporting goods drive. As part of the Year of Mercy, Kellenberg Memorial High School has asked their sports teams to take part in “S.O.S.” which stands for Service Over Self. In each S.O.S. mission, each team partakes in a community service or outreach program.
At the tournament, several boxes for used sporting goods were filled with donated equipment for sports such as lacrosse, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer that will be distributed to Gerald G. Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch to provide programs to underfunded students in the area.
The basketball tournament included 4 Catholic schools: Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School, St. Martin de Porres Marianist School, St. Mary’s School, and Long Beach Catholic. The Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School at Kellenberg beat Long Beach Catholic in the championship game, while St. Martin De Porres Marianist School finished in third place.
