During the week of March 2, Kellenberg Memorial celebrated Language Week, a worldwide initiative recognizing and promoting the importance of languages and cultural diversity. Language week consists of parades, cultural performances, and international potlucks held across the globe.
Kellenberg celebrates language week by dedicating each day of the week to the languages taught at Kellenberg: Spanish, Latin, and French. The focus is placed on language-learning activities to help raise awareness of linguistic diversity to the student body.
As students arrived at school each morning, they were greeted by excited classmates speaking a different language. Additionally, stickers with motivational phrases in different languages were given out each morning during language week.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in Spanish, French, and Latin prayer each day through the morning announcements, midday prayer, and after prayer sessions. In class, students watched cultural videos including the performances of traditional mariachi bands.
After school, language trivia games were held where students were offered a wide variety of fun prizes. Not to mention, the Spanish, Latin, and French clubs celebrated the week with the cuisine of each culture.
Mr. Ruhl, a Kellenberg French teacher, conveys, “Language week is one of my favorite weeks at Kellenberg! It’s a joy to spread my own love of languages with my students, and to have the opportunity to appreciate the various languages our students speak. The highlight of language week, in my opinion, is the international rosary. This showcase of student languages is a vibrant expression of our Catholic faith, a beautiful display of the universality of the Catholic Church.”
Language week not only enables students to learn and expand their language knowledge, but it also connects us with different cultures throughout the world.
