The Girls Track and Field Team captured the NSCHSGAA Championship title Saturday in impressive form. The team scored 102.50 points, well ahead of second place St.Anthony’s (56),third place St. John the Baptist (52), and fourth place Sacred Heart (50.5). Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Mercy rounded out the top six. It was only the second time in the storied history of the Girl’s Track program that the team eclipsed the 100 point mark in the league championship competition. The team, well balanced across the multi-disciplined events, had some outstanding individual winners. Gillian Blackwood won the 100 meter high hurdles in a state ranking time of 15.30. Blackwood finished second in the high jump behind winning teammate Kayra Theodore. Theodore also took a bronze in the triple jump, with Rhea Thomas-Hill finishing third in both the high hurdles and the triple jump. Maureen Lewin also ran a state ranking time, finishing second in the 1500 in 4:45, yet came back to win the 800 meters, and anchor the winning 3200 relay of Grace Browne, Ceara Conroy and Madeline Lay. The team also achieved some remarkable surprise top performances. In the steeple chase Brianna Lausev and Julia Bryant upset the favored runners finishing first and second, with Claire Burns and Erin Doherty finishing fourth and fifth for more points. The 4×100 Relay of Kailee Alberto, Tori Smith, Ariana Baldwin, and Kaitlin Romaine added to the scoring fireworks with a silver medal finish.
