On Saturday, September 28, The Varsity Football Team defeated St. Peter’s High School by a score of 14 to 7 in the exciting annual Homecoming game.
Despite the rain, the Firebird family gathered on Mitchell Field eager to show support for the team. Running back and linebacker Jack Barkley ‘25 started off the game with an impressive play against St. Peter’s. The Eagles didn’t stand a chance against the tackles of seniors Patrick Darcy and Nick Kramer.
Early in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Jack Durso scored a touchdown, leaving the score at a tie for 7.
As the timer wound down, Kellenberg’s “12th man” student section pumped up the team to pursue a win. With 22 seconds remaining, Durso ran 14 yards and scored the winning touchdown for the Firebirds.
The win was finalized after an interception against St. Peter’s from senior Ryan Sarro.
When asked about how he felt playing at his last homecoming game, senior Connor Evert replied, “The experience was honestly so surreal. Standing on the field, I couldn’t help but feel how much more important this game was compared to others and I’m just glad we came out with a win. It felt like the first of many lasts of my senior year.”
The amazing halftime performances from the Varsity Cheerleading and Dance Teams also helped to fire up the crowd. Sophia Pollina, a senior on the Varsity Dance Team, shares, “Performing at homecoming is my favorite part of the season. I’m so happy I got to share this amazing experience with my fellow teammates.”
The support and spirit shown by both the players and the crowd during the game was incredible. Kellenberg congratulates the Varsity Football Team on their hard work and determination displayed through their exceptional victory.
