On Thursday, January 29th, Kellenberg Memorial High School’s Surf Club went to the American Dream Mall in New Jersey to experience the world’s largest indoor wave pool for surfing. The wave pool is run by Skudin Surf, an organization based out of Long Beach, NY that specializes in teaching newcomers to surfing how to surf. The pool makes waves by sucking water down and then pushing it back up.
There are multiple different waves for different skill types, making sure that beginner through expert surfers will have fun at the wave pool. Skudin Surf provides surfboards at the wave pool, big and small, so nobody has to bring their own board.
Moderator Mrs. Shukri said, “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf.”
The club starts their trip by meeting after school at 3:20 P.M. in the Kellenberg senior parking lot to go to the mall. Once they get there, they have some time to grab food in the mall and then go to the wave pool. The wave pool is so appealing to the club not only for its constant, perfect waves that roll through every thirty seconds but also for its warmth. The club loves to get the chance to go in the wave pool because it takes away the cold temperatures of the winter while surfing in the ocean. When coming back from the mall the club will meet in the parking lot again at roughly 11:00 P.M.
Senior Gavin Smith said, “The wave pool is a great way to get out of the cold and spend some quality time with the team.”
During the fall and spring seasons, the surf club surfs on the weekends during the afternoon in Long Beach with Skudin Surf. There are twenty students in the club and fifteen that attended the club. Just like the wave pool, there are boards provided at Skudin Surf along with wetsuits. At the end of the season, there is an optional competition that club members can participate in against other schools.
Overall, the surf club is a great and very new addition to Kellenberg and is highly recommended to people interested in learning how to surf and already expert surfers, with amazing and fun opportunities. Click this link to see the Surf Club in action.
