Once a swimmer, now a tenacious runner, Zach Paggi showed how dedicated effort achieves new heights and remarkable “prs” at the 71st Annual Bishop Loughlin Games, where he rose to the rank of number three in New York state.
Like any athlete before a competition, he felt slightly unsure of the outcomes, but when coach Capozzoli ‘12 reminded him that the fastest time was 1:23, he knew he was capable of surpassing that time of breaking the record. Confidently, with precise pace and determination, Zach exceeded his expectations with a time of 1:22.42. Not only did he land a 1st place victory, but also the honorable ranking of #3 in New York, and #17 in the nation for his reputable breakthrough.
This success didn’t just emerge overnight, as Coach Moncada ‘03 puts it, “Zach’s relaxed Long Beach mindset lets him compete fearlessly, and the strength he gained from cross country is really emerging as we shift to shorter distances.”
“When the adrenaline hits and pumps you from the start,” Paggi suggests, “In order to conserve the exhilarating energy, you must match your pace with your opponent, and later on gain the momentum to surpass them.”
Not only would a recovery consist of easy cool downs, but Paggi recommends any protein associated fuel such as rice and steak, which is essential for the muscle after a strenuous hustle.
His advice to fellow runners: “Stay consistent, and if you have someone who can help motivate you to run faster, push each other.”
