Boys Soccer
Our lives are a journey of hills and valleys. At times, we are on top of the hill, believing that nothing can go wrong, and at times, we are in a valley, thinking that things will never get better.
This season has been a journey for these athletes, as there were many moments when this team was on top of the hill, earning a victory in our first-ever invitational tournament against Barrington, RI, and Newark Academy during our New Jersey weekend.
However, there were many moments these athletes were in a valley, dealing with the inconsistencies of a line-up due to injuries and self-inflicted issues, resulting in uncharacteristic results on the score sheet, and even having to climb back from a 3-0 deficit with 28 minutes remaining in our first contest against St. John the Baptist.
Though the season did not produce the result we expected, I know that adversity is the preparation for success, and I can confidently say that our now-experienced underclassmen and Junior class will be ready to do what is necessary to ensure that we fulfill the expectations of our program next season.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Michael Illiano
Michael is a true gentleman of the game, as he was consistent in his positional play as our goalkeeper and how he conducted himself off the field. He was at every practice and always put in his best effort in practice, which is why he is deserving of this award.
Most Improved Player
Matthew Hopper
Matthew went from being a reserve player off the bench in the first half of the season into one of the most important players in our starting eleven at the end of the season. Now, if that is not an improvement for you, I do not know what is. Through Matthew’s actions, and not his words, he allowed himself to earn the opportunity to play in one of the most essential tactical positions on the field, the 6. After watching his performance vs. St. Anthony’s in our semifinal matchup, I am confident we already have this position filled for next season.
Most Valuable Player
Miles Abdeldaim
In my opinion, an MVP must possess the three qualities of professionalism, consistency, and reliability. Miles embodies all three in a way that I have never seen in a young man before in my career. This young man conducted himself on and off the field with class, was always in attendance at practice and games, and played in every position we needed his talent when others could not. What is exciting for our coaching staff is that we get one more season to work with him, and we are looking forward for his leadership to shine.

Memory. It is a critical component of our humanity. Cicero writes that memory is “the treasure and guardian of all things.” In the ongoing human dialogue that is Sport, no matter if we still participate after five decades of involvement in it, or it ends in our high school life, sport solidifies the memory of the extremely important values and virtues of living. Anyone who participated in sport knows full well the memory of picking yourself back up when you fall or fail, the memory of sharing a workload framed with laughter and the joy of teammates. One hundred years ago when Teddy Roosevelt delivered his famous speech at the Sorbonne, and said “pity the poor soul who knows not victory nor defeat,” he was essentially saying “pity the poor soul who has no memory of the thrill of participating with others in a worthy endeavor, of trying and learning, of loving and being exhilarated by the sweat pouring from your brow, of the feeling of being totally emancipated by giving your best.’ In the basement of the Ground Zero museum Virgil’s famous line from the Aeneid, stands refulgent, “No day shall erase you from the memory of time.” It is our greatest hope as coaches, that our seniors, as we thank them for the memory of THEIR time, Mackenzie Brown, Michaela Dennean, Cece Kane, Caroline Malewski, Sam Overs, Catherine Pizzardi, Shannon Pulis, Maggie Schiffer, “Sully” Sullivan, and Anna Suttmiller, keep the rich memories of the lessons of the strength of resilience, the value of consistent preparation, the beauty of sharing with teammates, and the sheer joy of fulfillment of giving your best, learned on all the cross country training sites of the hills of the North Shore and Norm Levy Park, the woodchips of the Shoreline trail and our “sump,” the gravel of Hempstead Lake Park, and all the cross country race courses from Wilton, Connecticut to Jackson, New Jersey, to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Thank you girls.

Most Improved Player
Aileen Sullivan

Aileen Sullivan has never wavered from this ethos. She radiates joy at all times in being at practice and at competitions with her teammates. That joyous and consistent effort of purpose helped her improve by over two minutes at the 5 kilometer distance this year. We are honored to bestow Aileen “Sully” Sullivan with our Most Improved Award.

Volleyball
The truth is, you never know. You just never know.
There’s no fortune teller, no soothsayer, no prophet who can predict what a season is going to be like.
So you plan, you train, you prepare, and you hope. You hope that you get a chance, a chance where preparation will meet with opportunity and your team grabs it.
Because the real truth is . . . nobody hands out a trophy or a plaque at the beginning of the season. And only the coaches and players involved really know how much goes into receiving that hardware. What’s even more frustrating about the whole scenario is that there’s no guarantee, even after all the hours and all the hard work, you’ll receive anything.
So, what do you do? You go about the training and the drills and the film sessions because of the unknown, because life is so random and so unscripted. You do the only thing you can do to diffuse that unpredictability: you lay a foundation, you build up confidence, you cultivate a belief that you’re fully prepared. There’s no question that, by virtue of the way the 2024 players performed this year, they were definitely ready and clearly prepared to seize opportunity, and when they did, they squeezed the most out of it.
With all due respect to the anime club, their moderator could have easily sat on our bench, held a notebook, and won a volleyball championship with the players on this roster. They needed no special potion. They didn’t require a secret strategy. Pure and simple, it was the athletes themselves whose names appear in your program tonight who made it happen. My assistants and I were just along for the ride and what a magical ride it was.
By this time, everyone in the Kellenberg community probably knows that they are the 2024 NYS champions, but what most people don’t know is all of the grinding, training, and competing that went into that single performance. The 14 league games and the 2 conference playoff games provide just a small glimpse into their body of work. The girls competed in 6 tournaments, nearly every Saturday during the season, and they won the championship in every single one of them. They competed against 30 additional opponents beyond the league schedule, including the top public school programs in Nassau and Suffolk. But their commitment and work ethic came into play long before league play, long before tournament settings, and long before pre-season double sessions in August.
Back in the cold months of January 2024, they trained together in the weight room–sometimes even being forced to use the auditorium stage and aisles for sprint work and plyometric training. Only the players know who much dedication it requires to maintain those bonds when no one is in the stands and no one is keeping score. But they were keeping score, mentally in their own heads and emotionally in their own hearts, because they knew that true camaraderie and trust need to be built in the hours log in together off the court.
They pulled on those experiences when they were in the heat of battle–in the tournament championships against Wantagh, Massapequa, Sayville, Southside, and John Jay. They fed on them in the league semis and finals against St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony’s, and they drew upon them in the State playoffs against Maria Regina of Hartsdale and St. Mary’s of Buffalo.
Championship moments are few and far between, but championship habits are enduring. They last a lifetime. So while they were hoisting the State plaque above their heads in front of screaming fans, I’m certain their minds flashed back to a memory of themselves bathed in sweat after jumping over boxes set up on the carpet in front of the auditorium stage. These 19 student athletes–just like the coaching staff–didn’t know how the season would end (after all, no one ever does), but because their hours of preparation met with opportunity, they feasted on their past experiences to garner a seat at the head of the table. With everyone, for everyone. Wire to wire.

Bianca Sapano
Have you ever seen a crystal? Examined its intricate facets? The different angles and orientations, each side reflecting vibrant bands of light? Have you ever held a crystal? Felt the sensation of its smooth, cool surface? Maybe even experienced a sense of calm or focus (depending, of course, on your beliefs about the crystal’s inherent energy)? On our 2024 team, Bianca Sapano was our crystal.
In the three years that Bianca was on our varsity squad, she fulfilled many different roles, each season reflecting a light that shined deeper and brighter with every experience. As a sophomore, she played on the right side, the left side, and even competed a bit as a middle blocker–basically she did whatever the coaching staff asked of her even though she was two years younger than the captains of that 2022 team. In 2023, she took a crash course in setting and was the proverbial quarterback of the squad, running a 5-1 offense and amassing 690 assists in the process. This year, she became a hybrid attacker and setter for us, running 3 rotations distributing assists and 3 rotations crushing attacks. During that time, she chalked up 46 aces, 159 kills, and 143 digs. Despite her limited setting role, she still broke the school assist record in the league semi final against St. John the Baptist, finishing the year with 1053 touches that led to direct kills.
Aside from the rays of light that emanate from her on the court, Bianca brings an energy that has nothing to do with numbers. Her leadership, commitment to growth, team spirit, and exuberant joie de vivre transcend statistical performances to envelop everything she does and every teammate she plays with in an embrace of trust, camaraderie, and love.
When people look back and marvel at this treasure of a season, they will agree that Kellenberg was blessed to have Bianca Sapano in its trove. Amongst so many other gems on our roster, Bianca was the crystal that shed light, energy, and magic upon us all. Congratulations to the 2024 Varsity Volleyball Coaches Award Winner, Bianca Sapano.
Most Improved Player
Kelly Miller
It begins far away from the crowds, distanced from the cheers, in the absence of a scoreboard or fellow teammates. It starts within. Deep within. Inside a heart that pumps and beats with determination. Coursing in the blood that flows through the veins. Planted like a seed into the furrows of the mind, waiting to be nurtured and later harvested when the lights come on, the whistles start blowing, and the spectators file into the gym. Improvement begins and moves forward incrementally during the hours when no one is around, when the athlete is left only with herself and a dream.
The strides made by 2024 middle hitter Kelly Miller are nothing short of remarkable. She went from charting statistics on the sidelines in 2023 to being a captain, a starter, and a major contributor on a team that was even more talented than the one the prior season. Her ability to connect with all five of our setters was a testament to her versatility. Amassing 84 kills off different play sets–whether those combinations be in front of the setter or behind–Kelly provided the additional attack hand that confused and frustrated the opposition’s defensive alignment. Her footspeed and lateral movement at closing the block shut down rival hitters at least 40 times or baited them into roll shots or tips that our team could easily convert for points. In fact, in the finals of the Smithtown West Invitational Tournament, Kelly dominated eventual Long Island champion and undefeated Sayville, adding critical attacks and blocks in the gold medal performance.
The old adage holds true that “everybody wants to see the baby, but nobody wants to hear about the labor” because even the coaching staff of the 2024 team can only imagine the tremendous amount of work Kelly Miller grinded through in order to put together the season she did. She, however, like many other true champions is fully aware of the labor–the blood, sweat, and tears that were shed in those hours when nobody was watching, when it was just her and her dream of a perfect season. Congratulations to the 2024 Varsity Volleyball Team’s Most Improved Player, Kelly Miller.
Most Valuable Player
Stella Becker
Life is full of paradoxes–seeming contradictions that capture essential mysteries of human existence: “The more I learn, the less I know”; “You have to lose money to make money”; “Take on less and accomplish more.”
Think about it: why else would we take freezing ice cream and drizzle hot fudge all over it?
Sports revolve around contradictions as well: “Small things become big things”; “Effortless performance comes from effortful practice”; “Be quick but don’t hurry”; “Make an aggressive move but have a feathery touch”; “Focus on the pitch, but rip the swing”; “Serve tough, but keep it in.”
This year’s MVP embodies the beauty of paradox.
As co-president of an organization that delivers sports equipment and clothing throughout the world, Stella Becker is more than the air miles she travels, more than the statistical numbers she compiles, more than the force of gravity she defies with her sensational ability to vertically ascend over the net. She combines power with elegance, fierce competitiveness with humility, and breathtaking highlight reels with an aversion to being in the spotlight. For three years, she has competed at the varsity level–one as a middle blocker and the subsequent two as an outside hitter–and over those years, she has amassed a list of achievements that is jaw-dropping: AVCA Phenom, AVCA Player of the Week, Newsday Player to Watch; Newsday All-Long Island; VB All Long Island; AVCA All Region; AVCA Honorable Mention All American; NSCHSGAA MVP of the Championship game, and two-time NSCHSGAA Offensive Player of the Year. This year Stella amassed 28 aces, 140 digs, 155 receptions, and in the State semifinal against Maria Regina from Hartsdale, she broke 1000 kills, finishing the year with 1026 and establishing a new school record.
And just like all of those aforementioned paradoxes, we–the coaching staff at Kellenberg–are incredibly sad to see her go, but overwhelmingly thrilled to see what she will accomplish in the years to come. While she continues to dress in blue and gold, she will swap the Firebird volleyball court for the one at Hofstra University, combining power and elegance to create a future that will be even sweeter than any hot fudge sundae could ever be. Congratulations to Stella Becker for being the 2024 Varsity Volleyball Team’s Most Valuable Player.

Tennis B
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis B Team had an extraordinary season! Led by senior captains Emma Dolan, Colleen Tierney, and Kat Reyes, the team finished with an impressive 8-2 record. With only two returning starting players, the team began the season in August with a mix of fresh faces and raw talent. Their hard work, dedication, and relentless drive throughout the season exceeded all expectations, and making it to the finals was a remarkable achievement.
Tennis is a dynamic, multifaceted sport that blends individual performance with the strength of a cohesive team effort. Each match presented new challenges, but the girls embraced them with enthusiasm and grit. Not only did they work tirelessly to improve their skills, but they also supported and encouraged one another at every turn. In practice, they taught each other, offered words of motivation, and fostered an environment of camaraderie. During matches, they consistently displayed exceptional sportsmanship, earning respect from their opponents and coaches alike.
When the semifinals arrived, the team triumphed in a decisive 5-2 win over St. Dominic’s, proving their resilience and skill. Facing a seasoned St. John’s team in the finals was a daunting task, but the girls’ spirit and determination never wavered. They gave everything they had on that final day, playing their hearts out with pride and passion. Three courts went to tiebreaks, and there was a real chance to win. While the final score didn’t fully reflect the remarkable level of play the team displayed, they had already achieved something far more meaningful—a testament to their growth, effort, and heart.
The team took two courts that day, and the coaches could not be prouder of their performance. To our incredible athletes: not only are you talented players, but you are also kind, respectful, and thoughtful individuals. The way you treated each other, your opponents, and the sport itself was nothing short of inspiring. Your exceptional sportsmanship earned you the league’s Sportsmanship Award, and it was a true reflection of the character each of you brings to the game.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire team for such a thrilling and memorable season. Watching you grow as individuals and as a team was an absolute privilege. Best of luck to our seniors, we will miss you greatly. Congratulations on a season well beyond what we could have imagined! You have made us all proud!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Colleen Tierney
The recipient of this year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award for the Varsity Tennis B team is a player whose dedication to the sport and to her teammates has been nothing short of remarkable over the past four years. She never missed a practice or match, embodying the true meaning of commitment. Though she was often quiet, her actions spoke volumes, and she led by example in every aspect of the game.
As a doubles partner, teammate, and friend, she was reliable, supportive, and always focused on the success of the team. Her consistency on the court was unmatched, and in match play, she was always determined to give her best. We often joked that she could hit 1,000 balls without breaking a sweat! No matter what was asked of her, she always stepped up with a smile, eager to contribute in any way possible.
What truly set this player apart, however, was her sense of humor and her unwavering reliability. She treated everyone with respect, from her fellow players to the coaching staff, and embodied the values Kellenberg strives to instill in all of its student-athletes.
It has been an absolute joy to watch her transform from a quiet, reserved individual into a confident, fun, and driven athlete. Her growth—both on and off the court—has been incredible, and seeing her win in the finals this season was the perfect culmination of her hard work and dedication. This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Colleen Tierney. Congratulations Colleen, we will miss you so much.
Most Improved Player
Kate Enright
The entire team showed impressive growth throughout the season, but no player improved more than this one. This player put in an extraordinary amount of work during the offseason to earn a starting position as a singles player. Her dedication to improvement, combined with her willingness to listen and her fierce desire to win, propelled her success on the court.
Her ability to come from behind and secure dramatic wins was unmatched. She thrived in high-pressure situations, and no matter what challenges or obstacles she faced, she found a way to push through and emerge victorious. Tiebreakers, which many players dread, became her specialty this season—she not only embraced them, but excelled in them, often turning the tide in her favor when the match was on the line.
Watching this player grow and succeed in match play this season has been nothing short of inspiring. Her determination and tenacity made her one of the most exciting players to watch. This year’s Most Improved Player Award goes to Kate Enright, and it’s well-deserved. You’ve made your coaches and teammates incredibly proud. Congratulations on an outstanding season!
Most Valuable Player
Emma Dolan
On a team, your most valuable player will consistently come up with a win and never gives up when faced with a challenge. This player consistently delivered when the team needed her most, finishing with the top record in the league and earning Player of the Year honors. She played on the highest court, where the competition was toughest, and always showed unwavering determination to win. Her dedication to the team was evident in everything she did—she worked tirelessly to improve her game, always striving for excellence. As captain, she set the standard for what it means to be a true leader, balancing her own success with a deep commitment to the team’s growth and unity. Her contributions to the tennis program went far beyond just her athletic performance; she was a mentor, role model, and a source of inspiration. Her work ethic, positivity, and leadership will be sorely missed. She was the heart and soul of the team, and without a doubt, this year’s Most Valuable Player. Girls Swimming
The Girls Varsity Swim Team started off the season strong with a nice win over St. Francis prep with a score of 93 to 72. Then the girls knew it was time to lock in for a very hard season ahead of them. With two tough losses against Sacred Heart and St. Anthony’s, the team came together and knew that they had no choice but to come up on top and beat The Mary Louis Academy. This meet was neck and neck the whole time until our 100 back event. That was when the team took off and we were able to secure a win with a score of 86-79. With this win the girls knew that we were in a very good position for a top 3 spot in champs. During champs, the girls were able to achieve their goals. This year we had girls come back in every event, ranging from 25th place all the way to 2nd place. We had 4 state qualifiers for our 400 free relay which included, Katerina Mazur, Isabella Law, Blessing Williamson and Morgan Kelsch. Morgan Kelsch also qualified for states in her individual 100 free event and went to the state meet in Rochester. The coaching staff couldn’t be more proud of all the hard work that this team has put in this year and can’t wait to see what is in store for them next year. We also wish our seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Ariana Herrera
Ariana made a commitment to this team 4 years ago and has been one of the most dedicated girls on our team since. Ariana is the type of swimmer who can be put into any event. She knew once we switched her events, that she was a huge asset to the team. She worked day after day to improve her skills not only in the water but outside as well. Being an upperclassman, she knew she had to be a role model for the underclassman on her team. The girls looked up to her and admired her commitment to this team.
Most Improved Player
Lauren Reyes
Lauren has worked so hard since day 1. She has dropped an enormous amount of time and secured a spot in our A relay that secured a 6th place spot at our Champs finals. She has put in so much effort and time and made this a goal which she has accomplished. She Got faster and faster every week. The coaches are very proud of all that she has accomplished.
Most Valuable Player
Morgan Kelsch
Morgan was one of our state qualifiers this year who had the opportunity to go to the state meet. Going from 20th in New York State for 100 Freestyle to 8th in New York State for 100 Freestyle is not an easy task to do, but Morgan did it. Morgan also went not only a season best time but also a personal best of a 52.69 in the state meet. She has worked so hard and made this goal for herself and achieved it. The coaching staff couldn’t be more proud of that hard work she put into this season.

Dance Team
The 2024 Kellenberg Varsity Dance Team exemplified hard work, dedication, and commitment to ensure a successful fall season. We began our season a few days after the team was chosen with our NDA Dance Camp, where the team worked tirelessly to learn an extensive amount of choreography and new skills. At the conclusion of the two day camp, they had to perform one of these pieces of choreography and in doing so, earned themselves a bid to the 2025 NDA Nationals in Orlando, Florida this coming February. In addition to their demanding practice schedule, the team performed at the Varsity Football home games. The girls worked hard to learn all different kinds of dances to perform, and we were able to celebrate our 6 Seniors at the final home game.
In addition to game dances, the girls have had numerous choreography workshops where they learned four very difficult and intense competition dances. They have continued to work on those dances and perfect their skills in preparation for competition season. As a team, they also participated in many team bonding activities including team hibachi and karaoke. We are very proud to have coached a group of girls who always motivated each other during practices and games. All of the coaches would like to personally thank every member of the Varsity Dance Team for their hard work and dedication this past season.

Football
The 2024 Varsity Football team carried on the proud tradition of Firebird Football both on and off the field that so many other teams have left before them. The team opened up training camp on August 14th but had already put in about eight months of work before that so we were able to hit the ground running. During camp the team worked hard to become the best team possible but also had great experiences during full day practices, our overnight retreat, team BBQ, and alumni dinner that highlighted why it is so special to be a part of this group.
On the field we opened up our league schedule with a Friday night road trip to Fordham Prep where the elite kickoff return and punt units led by Donovan O’Toole and the presence of Isaiah Gittens on the offensive and defensive lines would help propel us to a victory over the Rams. The next week the team won a thrilling homecoming victory over St. Peter’s by a score of 14-7 in front of a packed crowd. Jack Durso ran for a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and Patrick Darcy would record a pair of sacks on defense before Ryan Sarro “called game” and intercepted the final St. Peter’s pass to put the finishing touches on the homecoming victory. After a few narrow defeats the Firebirds closed out the regular season with a win over St. Francis Prep in front of a home crowd. Jack Geoghan made his return to the end one to seize control of the game while Linebackers Vincenzo Cascone, Nick Kramer, and Cedric Frater did what they did all season long making tackles all over the field. Unfortunately in the playoffs the Firebirds would falter to the defending state champions in a hard fought game that everyone was proud of.
The team would like to thank all the staff and students that supported the team at our games throughout the year. We would also like to especially thank all of the parents for going above and beyond with their support with everything we did this season.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Brendan Galla
Brendan would do anything that was asked of him for the past two seasons, he lined up and took significant reps at every position on offense with the exception of the offensive line. Selfless is the word that comes to mind when describing Brendan as a teammate, and would sacrifice what is best for him for the better of the team. In addition to these qualities Brendan worked not only every day during the season but also tirelessly throughout the offseason to make himself the best player he could be and to make our team the best it could be.
Most Improved Player
Luke Chernaski
Luke played as a junior as a wide receiver and tight end seeing time on the field in certain packages but wanted more for himself as a senior. His commitment in the off season to working out and being at all of our team activities saw him go from being a player who was on the field for some of our offensive snaps to one who was on the field for just about every offensive and defensive snap. On offense Luke was arguably our most important player as we would move him from Wide Receiver to Tight End to Fullback to do whatever job was needed.
Most Valuable Player
Donovan O’Toole
Donovan was the heartbeat of our team this season. When a spark was needed to get us going it would be Donovan who we turned to. Oftentimes this came on our Kick Return unit where Donovan led all of New York State in returning yards totaling over 700. In the first game of the season Donovan returned a kick for a touchdown and after that every time we had a kick return after giving up a score or coming out of the locker room we felt we had the chance to bring it back for six. Donovan also led the team with 36 receptions for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Cheerleading
This fall season has been filled with progress, dedication, and appreciation from the Varsity cheerleading team. This talented group has gained elite skills quickly and has challenged themselves day after day. With the opening of the FCAA, the cheerleaders finally have the ability to practice to their full potential. I firmly believe that the feeling of appreciation for our new practice space has motivated the team to work harder than ever and has inspired us to strive for nothing less than excellence. Since August, the girls have committed to perfecting our competitive routine which they will finally get to debut this Sunday in the Poconos! Along with preparing for our competitive season, the girls enjoyed their time on the sidelines cheering on the Varsity football team at exciting home games. The entire cheerleading program had a spirit filled day at this year’s Homecoming game. The Varsity cheerleaders and Varsity dance team even put on a joint halftime performance to showcase their enthusiasm as Firebirds. And most impressively, the Varsity cheerleaders really showed their outstanding leadership by running a stellar youth clinic with over 80 attendees. The hustle and bustle of the fall varsity cheerleading season has been filled with passion and excitement and we can’t wait to see what the Winter season has in store for us!

Girls Soccer
The Girls Varsity soccer team had an exceptional season, entering the year with a solid foundation of nine returning seniors and a talented group of underclassmen. Through dedicated summer workouts and early-season practices, the team came together quickly, building strong chemistry and setting the stage for a successful campaign. Their commitment and teamwork from the start allowed them to hit the ground running, ready to take on tough competition and achieve greatness this season.
Throughout the season, the Firebirds faced tough competition in both league and non-league games. They secured impressive victories over teams like Sacred Heart, South Side High School, Oceanside, and Massapequa. Powered by a dynamic midfield, an explosive offense, and unmatched team chemistry, the girls proved themselves to be a formidable force on the field. Whether in victory or defeat, they exemplified the Firebird way, demonstrating resilience, sportsmanship, and grace every step of the way. Their commitment to teamwork and their ability to rise to the occasion made them a team to be reckoned with throughout the season.
The coaching staff is proud to have coached such a committed and dedicated team. We are confident that the habits developed and lessons learned throughout this season will lead not only to a continually strong program, but also to individual success of the girls in their future athletic endeavors.

Every successful athlete understands that true speed, strength, and skill are built not during big games, but through the dedication and hard work put in during practices. Throughout the season, Michaela Ressegger has demonstrated exceptional growth in nearly every aspect of her play. At practice, she consistently pushed herself and her teammates during drills, always striving for improvement. Michaela’s willingness to ask questions, put in extra effort, and learn from both coaches and teammates has been key to her development into an outstanding player. I want to thank and acknowledge our incredible coaching staff. To my right, we have Coach Joe Moncada, Coach John Capozzoli, and Coach Andrew Gornstein, who were all integral in helping create the culture that has truly transformed our program this year. Their dedication to the team and their ability to connect with our athletes have been irreplaceable.
I would also like to thank Coach Marty Brown, Coach Amanda Green, and Coach Christina Fitzgerald for their support and presence throughout the season.
Lastly, I want to extend a very special thank you to Coach Juan Estrella. While he might still look like he’s a senior in high school, Coach Estrella has been the architect of this program for the last 25 years. He’s coached everyone on this stage and has inspired us all as we’ve entered the world of coaching and teaching. His dedication to this team is unmatched, and we owe so much of our success to the foundation he has built.
Cross-country and track often get intertwined—XC/Track, Track/XC. But the truth is that cross-country is a team sport in its purest form.
You look to the teammate on your left—they’re running ten miles with you. You look to the teammate on your right—they’re running ten miles with you. You all put in the same hard work, share the same struggles, and strive for the same goals. In doing so, a special bond is formed.
That bond started over the summer and grew stronger throughout the season. A trip to Six Flags, our retreat with Mr. Moran, and a pasta party hosted by team captain Colin Marsanico were all moments that helped solidify this team as more than just teammates.
Close-knit teams like these often lead to success.
Some of the season’s team highlights include:
- Winning the Suffolk Coaches Invitational, defeating many of Long Island’s top public schools.
- Winning their division at the NYC XC Carnival.
- Placing third at the league championship, our highest finish in four years.
- And Placing top 10 at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship for the first time in seven years.
In the process, three of our athletes—Zach Paggi, Aidan Hopkins, and Amir Ajenishe—qualified for the State Federation Championship at Wappinger Falls, where they competed this past weekend. Zach and Aidan placed in the top 200, with Amir close behind, breaking 19 minutes on one of the most challenging courses in the country.
On the individual side, a strong core has developed to help us continue building on this year’s success. This group includes Colby Lazo, Owen Hanley, Viktor Lorentz, Daniel Meenan, and the previously mentioned Zach, Amir, and Aidan.
Special recognition is deserved for Aidan. This year, he broke every freshman record in the school and was the individual champion in both the league and intersectional championships in the freshman division. His performances this year have set a new standard for our program.
With so many new athletes joining this season, senior leadership was critical to our success. We were fortunate to have incredible leaders like Colin Marsanico, Nicholas Badolato, and Thomas Gallagher.
Colin led by example both on and off the course, hosting team events and ensuring every athlete felt like a valued team member.
Thomas, who was new to cross country himself and although had no idea what was going on 90% of the time, was a great vibes guy.
Nicholas showed the team resilience as he battled injuries all season yet still showed up every day to work. Culminating in an individual JV victory at the CHSAA Intersectional Champs. Their leadership will be missed, but their impact on this team will endure.
As we reflect on our successes, we know they are only the beginning. The foundation laid by our seniors, the strides made by our underclassmen, and the unwavering commitment of our coaching staff have set the stage for an even brighter future.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Aidan Hopkins
In what will go down as one of the greatest freshman seasons in NSCHSAA history, Aidan Hopkins re-wrote the record books for Kellenberg Memorial High School. On the path to breaking every freshman record the school has, Aidan didn’t just meet expectations—he shattered them. Among his remarkable accomplishments, Aidan broke 20-year-old records, redefining what is possible for a freshman runner. In an even more historic feat, he became the first freshman in 30 years to win the intersectional championship, solidifying his place as one of the brightest young stars in the league’s history.
Aidan’s success is no accident—it’s the product of poise, dedication, and an unrelenting drive to improve. This dedication took root during his time at the Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School and has only grown as he entered our high school. While he might be the youngest member of the team, his teammates look to him for motivation and inspiration. Whether it’s his tireless work ethic, his ability to rise to the occasion in the biggest moments, or his leadership by example, Aidan has become a cornerstone of this team, embodying the values of commitment and excellence that every athlete aspires to.
Most Improved Player
Colin Marsanico
After a frustrating junior season plagued by injuries, Colin made an extraordinary comeback in his senior year, solidifying himself as a Varsity Top Seven runner. In a season defined by resilience and determination, Colin transformed his performances, dropping an incredible two minutes on the grueling 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park. His improvement wasn’t just personal; it was pivotal, helping Kellenberg Memorial High School secure a Top 10 finish at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship for the first time in seven years.
Colin’s success this season wasn’t just about his individual times—it was also his leadership as team captain. He embraced his role with dedication and poise. With such a young team, a leader like Colin was necessary to guide and inspire his teammates, setting a standard of hard work and accountability.
Most Valuable Player
Zachary Paggi
Very few athletes can join cross country without any prior experience in distance running and immediately rise to the top ranks of the CHSAA. Apparently, Zach Paggi is one of them. In his first season, Zach proved that raw talent, coupled with relentless determination, can lead to extraordinary success.
Zach’s impressive achievements speak for themselves: 2nd place at Frosh/Soph Leagues, 2nd place at Frosh/Soph Intersectionals, and the team’s top finisher at League Championships, Intersectional Championships, and the NY State Federation Championship.
What truly sets Zach apart is his wholehearted embrace of the sport. His buy-in to the culture of running has transformed our program. In less than a year, he has gone from never stepping foot on a track to becoming an enthusiastic ambassador of our sport, sharing his passion with anyone who will listen. Zach’s energy, dedication, and leadership have made him a true MVP, both on and off the track.
