Wednesday night, the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team defeated Chaminade at Chaminade with a score of 46-42.
The stakes were high, as Kellenberg and Chaminade were fifth and fourth seeds, respectively. The score was neck and neck throughout the game, leading to high tensions as the game progressed.
Senior Jordan Leach scored all of his 5 points in the last five minutes of the game, ending with a score of 46-42 and a Firebird victory.
Matthew Connolly also made big plays with 10 points and 4 assists. Brenden Gharagozlo, Stephen Kiernan, Jack Geoghan, John Hastings, and Mike Tagios also made excellent plays during the game.
The victory was especially powerful considering the team’s previous loss to Chaminade with a score of 69-57.
A major takeaway from this game was not only the fantastic performance of the team, but of the student section. Kellenberg students flooded the student section to support the Firebirds in this nail-biter game. It took every ounce of civility, order, and respect for the fans to not rush the court as the game ended with a Kellenberg win.
Team Manager Jean Severino noticed the impact of fan support on the players. “Seeing our student section filled and hyping us up throughout the game was really what helped us pull through. We could not have been more grateful for all the students and parents who made their way to the game,” he shared. The spirit of the fans can be seen in the video attached below.
Coach Lyons says, “I want them to enjoy the opportunity to be playing in a semi final at Hofstra. When you take advantage of opportunities it makes great memories and moments. It’s important that they know they need to stay together through the highs and lows.”
With the help of the fans, the Varsity Basketball team hopes to continue on this winning streak and looks forward to Friday night against St. Dom’s at Hofstra.
