On Sunday, January 5th, the Girls Varsity Basketball team took a trip over to the Rockville Centre Recreation Center to work with the organization, Hoops for All. Hoops for All is a program that gives children and teenagers with special needs the opportunity to have fun on the court. The participants are encouraged to participate in a series of stations: dribbling, passing, and shooting and each session is finished with an informal scrimmage.
When the girls arrived they were paired with a buddy and helped them through each station. While going through the stations the girls encouraged their buddy and tried to help them improve their basketball skills. The girls were so happy to be there and had big smiles the whole time. Not only was it a fun experience for them, but it also humbled them. It showed them how they should be thankful for their skills and capabilities. Finally, it taught them to use their talents to assist others and how to put others’ needs over the self.
