The English department at Kellenberg Memorial HS is proud to announce that, for the second year in a row, sophomore Meghan Lazzarini has been recognized by the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City for her exceptional writing skill. Meghan’s creative submission in the 2023 contest involved writing a letter home to family back in Ireland detailing how her narrator was adjusting to life here in the States.
Living in Woodlawn with her Aunt Maeve and Uncle Jack, Meghan’s character, Saoirse, wrote to her parents about the food, transportation modes, educational system, and iconic sites found in New York. At one point in the letter, Saoirse mentions how, since there was no hurling team available, she signed up for soccer and immediately became accepted into a larger family of sorts. She then revealed how her new teammates “explained any American slang I was confused about and offered their fair share of Irish accent impressions. I’m not innocent either; the ‘cawfees’ and ‘dawgs’ I hear everyday still secretly make me laugh.”
Mrs. Marconi, Meghan’s sponsoring teacher, was thrilled to learn about this recent award. “I wasn’t surprised when I heard that Meghan had, once again, been singled out for her superior writing ability. Her ideas are so imaginative, and the ease with which she expresses those ideas is truly commendable.”
The KM English department looks forward to seeing Meghan’s name in print many more times in the years to come!
