Kellenberg Memorial High School golfers freshman Eloise Alveari and senior Orla Cormican led the Diocese of Rockville Centre regional team to a state championship victory following a strong postseason run.
Alveari captured third place overall at the Girls’ State CHSAA Golf Tournament, while Cormican secured a tenth-place finish. Their combined performances lifted the Rockville Centre squad to the top of the team leaderboard.
The Firebirds earned their spots in the state tournament after a dominant showing at the NSCHSGAA League Tournament. At the league qualifier, Alveari placed third, Cormican finished sixth, and teammate Gabby DeBono secured eighth place. The finishes by Alveari and Cormican officially punched their tickets to Monday’s state finals.
In postseason match play, Kellenberg advanced to the finals by defeating St. John the Baptist 4½ to ½ in the semifinal round. The Firebirds ultimately fell to St. Anthony’s Friars in the championship match on May 8.
Despite the final defeat, the Kellenberg team was recognized for their integrity on the course. League coaches voted the Firebirds as the recipients of the League Sportsmanship Award to close out the season.
