On Saturday, December 21, the basketball programs from Kellenberg Memorial and Kennedy Catholic held a Christmas drive to collect baby items for the Regina Residence. The Regina Residence provides housing and supportive services for up to 10 pregnant and/or parenting young women and their children. They provide a structured living environment, with regular meal times, shared household work, study time, and even evening curfews. Overall the Residence provides stability for these women and gives them chances for better opportunities.
Throughout the course of the day, five games were played between the two programs but more importantly, the ten teams were able to collect over 700 items for the Regina Residence. The teams collected items such as diapers, bottles, blankets, infant clothes, and any other items to donate to the Maria Regina Residence.
After having the Sunday off, the girls then came in early before practice on Monday, and along with members of the boys varsity team, loaded up a bus with all the donations and drove over to the Residence in Merrick. Upon arrival, the girls put on their Santa hats and their brightest smiles to deliver the packages to the members of the Residence. The drive was successful and all members of the teams that participated were glad to have made a difference in the community during the Christmas season.
