Varsity Softball
Samantha Grillo
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Sam Grillo was not only one of the team captains this past year, but she epitomized the heart beat of the team. If the team was in need of encouragement, she would provide it. If the team needed to be called to task, she would do so. Sam always played the game for the best result of the team. She would spend many hours agonizing over how to make the team perform better, and how to bring out the best in each individual player. Perhaps her selflessness is best seen in the fact that she began the season in the outfield, moved in to play shortstop for several weeks (her position last season), and then concluded the season in the outfield. Throughout these defensive changes, she never once asked why, complained or pouted. She embraced every task with an eager smile. In a similar fashion it is important to note that she led the team in sacrifice hits, again demonstrating her team first mentality. Her leadership, generosity, and selflessness will be greatly missed next year when she begins her academic studies and softball playing days at Catholic University. The Varsity coaching staff wishes her all the best next year and beyond!
Ava Golio
Most Improved Player
Ava Golio had not pitched in almost three years before the start of the 2022 Varsity Softball season. She began working over the summer and in the fall. This season her competency in the circle enabled the team to take on a very aggressive and full schedule because she added a pitching arm that would not have been there a year ago. Despite her novice status, Ava amassed a 5 and 1 record, striking out 31 batters in 36 innings. Her improvement in pitching became so clear that she earned a start in a semi-final game against the # 2 seed Sacred Heart. Additionally, she improved her level of outfield play so when she wasn’t pitching, she was one of the team’s more reliable outfielders. Ava Golio’s vast improvement enhanced the overall performance of the team. Congratulations to Ava!
Natalie Bottiglieri
Most Valuable Player
Natalie Bottiglieri finished the regular season batting .667, leading the team with 38 hits, 23 runs scored, 42 total bases, 15 stolen bases and an on base percentage of .694. Her 38 hits represented a remarkable 25 % of all hits recorded by the 15 woman roster of players! Against the best competition in the Catholic League, St. Anthony’s and Sacred Heart, Natalie batted .666 with 8 hits in 12 at bats, scoring 3 runs, stealing 3 bases, and collecting 2 RBI’s. In short, she had a hand in 5 of the 9 runs the team scored in those 4 games. Additionally, she played some innings at second base and in all three outfield positions. Every opponent remarked this season how valuable an offensive weapon she was. In fact, she went 2 for 3 against Donovan Catholic from New Jersey who is currently ranked 18th out of all high school softball programs nationwide. The Varsity coaching staff wishes Natalie all the best next year as she begins her academic studies and softball playing career at Stonehill College.

Boys Varsity Volleyball
Brian A’Hearn
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Brian A’Hearn has only been with the volleyball program for a few years but his passion for the game is endless. Ever since he entered the program he was always eager to be a part of something bigger than himself. This year his commitment to this club and his heart to put others before him makes him the ultimate teammate. Each day in practice he would be an extension of the coaching staff. No matter if he started, did not play, or had an off day, Brian helped with drills, organized players for our scrimmages and was a pivotal part of our team rallies from the sidelines. Literally no matter the situation, you could watch his mannerisms and know that he always cared. The best example of his team first mentality was when he filled in for setter. Brian helped the team go 2-0 during that span, recorded over 30 assists in each game and then switched to libero for the remainder of the season helping the team play its best volleyball all year. It is an honor to give this year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award to Senior Brian A’Hearn.
Matthew Green
Most Improved Player
In only his second season, Matthew Green became a leader on and off the floor. Matt is a natural athlete and can pick up on a new drill or skill set very effortlessly. He is also a member of our prestigious football program.; therefore, when he came into the program the coaches were excited about his potential. This past season we began to work on his footwork, his approach, and finally his arm swing which he perfected in the second half of the season. Matthew came into the season with an eagerness to learn how to become not just a starter but a go-to player when the game was on the line. Each day he constantly worked on improving his hands and footwork to become not only a starter but our team’s go-to Right Side hitter. It has been a pleasure to watch the enjoyment Matthew has when he gets a big block or kill as well as the excitement on his face to celebrate a teammate’s success. This year’s Most Improved Award goes to senior Matthew Green.
Aidan Murphy
Most Valuable Player
This year’s most valuable award goes to a boy who has been in the program since day one. He began to learn the game while at arch-rival Chaminade and eventually came to Kellenberg. After the graduation of All-Conference outside hitters Craig Addeo and Richard Alvarez, the staff was concerned about who would step up to be our outside hitter. Aidan Murphy worked all summer to be our guy. From the beginning, he was working on his hands, footwork, and swing. His confidence, play, and attitude made him and our captain. Aidan had double-digit kills in 7 of our 13 games this year to go along with many games playing all the way around and recording double-digit digs as well. He has put together a fantastic career and his services will truly be missed next year. The 2022 Boys Varsity Volleyball Most Valuable Player is Senior, All-League, and Captain Aidan Murphy.

Boys Varsity Tennis
Matthew Reardon
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
The boys varsity tennis team has been honored to have Matthew Reardon on the team since his freshman year. Throughout the years, Matthew has demonstrated a high level of play, good sportsmanship, and commitment to his team. All of his hard work earned Matthew a starting position these past few seasons as well as leading the team in overall wins. Matthew’s success on the courts did not stop there, he excelled academically, finishing with an overall cumulative average of 99% placing him amongst the top 4 students of the class of 2022. This fall Matthew will head to Binghamton University to study Mathematics. We will miss Matthew and look forward to following all his future successes!
Alfredo Flores
Most Improved Player
Without question, this young man displayed a commitment to the team and the sport. Alfredo Flores has improved greatly over the past few years and is our choice for most improved player. His hard work and focus helped contribute to the success of our team. Alfredo possessed a quiet confidence and was welcoming to all our new players. This fall Alfredo will be heading to the University of Toronto as a Political Science major and have no doubt he will continue to succeed.
Jack O’Neill
Most Valuable Player
Captain Jack O’Neill is a highly skilled tennis player who began playing for Kellenberg in his Freshman year. During the 2020/2021 seasons, Jack was recognized as Newsday’s Top 15 doubles players in the NSCHSAA league. But besides his obvious talents, Jack shared his enthusiasm and passion for tennis at every practice and match. Eager to win, he worked at his skills, while assisting and teaching at a local tennis club. He shared his expertise with fellow teammates and had a way of making us all laugh while doing it. This year Jack played first Doubles and Singles, earning his best winning record for any season to date. Jack also plans to continue to play tennis at Siena College this fall. The team will not be the same without Jack, but we are so proud of his accomplishments and wish him continued success on and off the courts.

Girls Varsity Golf
Bridget LaRosa
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
A first impression is important for any player. The Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner’s first day of tryouts didn’t start well. She showed up about an hour and a half late to the tryouts. After calming her down and telling her she’d have a chance to make her first impression at tryouts, Bridget LaRosa settled right in to hit great shots on the range and the golf course. The coaches saw her swing and we thought we caught lightning in a bottle.
She started out the year as an alternate but quickly moved her way up the lineup to the #2 position. Later in the year, Bridget provided valuable points in team victories. From that first day, she could have given up and walked away, but Bridget proved her commitment to her team and the coaches. Congratulations to the 2022 Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner: Bridget LaRosa
Madison Firoz
Most Improved Player
Improvement is not just a single day or single moment-it’s a process. For this year’s Most Improved Player Award winner, her improvement started last fall as a member of the girls’ golf club and continued as a second year member of the team. Madison Firoz was always asking the coaches about ways to improve her swing, her stance, and her shots around the green. With that day-in and day-out effort on her golf game, Madison went from being a player who played certain courses and teams to a player who played in all the matches and against all the tough teams. Madison earned valuable points for the team this season, and she will be counted upon to give valuable upperclass leadership in the future. Congratulations to the 2022 Most Improved Player Award winner: Madison Firoz
Catherine Slade
Most Valuable Player
This player’s value to the team is certainly immeasurable. While Coach Doran may drive the bus to practices and matches, Catherine Slade certainly drives the bus on the golf course and driving range. Her effort on the course in matches and practices sets the tone for the entire team. She stepped up this season to fill the #1 position and has done an excellent job. Cat expects much from herself on the golf course and when she has a bad day on the course, she is the first person to analyze her performance and find ways to improve it. There is no ceiling to Cat’s ability and performance in the league. She is one of the best players in the league. Congratulations to the 2022 Most Valuable Player Award winner: Catherine Slade.

Boys Varsity Crew
Kevin Kokiadis
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
As a senior, Kevin stepped up this year in many ways. He would always arrive to the boat house early to help expedite the process of getting on the water. He has become our boat mechanic as he is always counted on to repair any issues with the boats. His participation at practice was consistent as was the expectation he started when joining the program as a freshman. The Coaches, and team, could always count on Kevin to lend a helping hand on the water or in the boathouse. Kevin worked hard every day at practice and was someone who always had attention for detail and he continually tracked his improvement. It is without hesitation, that Kevin is very deserving of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award.
Ian Blaney
Most Improved Player
Many of the members of the Crew team are new to the sport. Ian Blaney is one of those individuals who began his experience during winter workouts on ERGs. As we entered the Spring season, Ian had to adjust to the technique used to row on the water. He was not only able to adapt to the new movements, but was able to demonstrate a lot of skill. He quickly became reliable to the boat as a stroke seat which sets the pace for the other members of the boat.
Miles Francisque
Most Valuable Player
Miles is the type of athlete that is always going above and beyond the expectations from the coaching staff. He is constantly asking for conditioning workouts and ways to improve his skills in rowing. Miles naturally became a leader of the team as he could always be found building moral and encouraging his teammates. Additionally, you never had to ask Miles to help out somewhere because he was already helping others. His strength and skill are noted as he plays a large role in the power house of the boat. Miles is a valued member of this team and has a bright future ahead.

Girls Varsity Crew
Ciara Bice
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ciara is the type of athlete that all coaches love to have. She was flexible with her position in the boat, a jack of all trades. She was willing to do whatever needed to help her boat succeed. Even if Ciara was prevented from coming to practice, she always made sure to complete a suggested workout and email it to the coaches to review. As a freshman, and first year rower with minimal experience, Ciara stood out as one of the strongest rowers on the women’s varsity boat. We are very proud of the commitment Ciara has shown as it is a great example for her teammates and we look forward to her future success.
Ava LoFrumento
Most Improved Player
Last year, Ava was brand new to rowing and suffered an injury that prevented much improvement throughout the season. However, Ava’s determination to improve showed through participating in voluntary winter workouts and was immediately noticed once we got on the water. She quickly became a vital member of her boat being placed in the stroke seat. Ava has learned to control her technique enough to set the pace for the entire varsity boat. We are very proud of her improvements and look forward to future success.
Mary Fitton
Most Valuable Player
Although she is only a freshman, Mary Fitton is mature beyond her years. She is the perfect example for a successful student athlete as she excels in the classroom and also on the water. Mary is always trying to improve by going above and beyond the expectations of the coaches. She is a great example of overcoming setbacks and giving maximum effort every time she is on an ERG or in the boat. Mary is part of the powerhouse of her boat which depends on her strength and technique. Her skill set is far beyond her size and experience which leads us to believe Mary has a bright future ahead in rowing and a great asset to the program.

Boys Varsity Golf
James Bayley
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
As the recipient of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award, this golfer certainly defines the idea of commitment to the game of golf. James Bayley has committed to setting his goals in golf, and when he has reached them, he sets loftier goals and knows that with continued practice and hard work he will one day achieve those goals. The coaches will miss his work ethic and his enjoyment of the game as he continues his educational career in college. Congratulations to the 2021-22 Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner: James Bayley
Patrick Celiberti
Most Improved Player
The Most Improved Player Award recipient for the Boys Golf team is one golfer who continues to improve all parts of his game and grow as a competitive golfer. Patrick Celiberti regularly hits fairways and greens in regulation. He consistently has birdies and pars each competitive round he plays. Patrick has also grown into a model teammate for some of the inexperienced golfers to rely upon and to look up to. The coaches hope Patrick will continue to grow into a leadership role on the team. Congratulations to the Boys’ Golf team’s Most Improved Player Award winner: Patrick Celiberti.
Ciaran Regan
Most Valuable Player
The Boys Golf team Most Valuable Player Award winner is one of the best golfers in the NSCHSAA. His scoring average continued to drop as the season went on, and he finished the season with an average final score of 3.5 over par. Ciaran Regan consistently shoots two to five over par each round. He is a student of the game who keeps meticulous statistics so he knows what areas of his game worked well and what areas need improvement. He continued his leadership role on the team and served as a role model to the other members of the team. The coaches can’t wait to see Ciaran’s growth as a person and as a player next season. Congratulations to Boys Golf team Most Valuable Player: Ciaran Regan

Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Jessica Lampasone
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Senior Captain Jessica Lampasone is the recipient of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award for the 2022 season. If the coaches were to ask Jess to jump, she’d respond with “how high?”. Jess put her heart and soul into this team. Right from the beginning, Jess was a natural leader who always wanted the team to improve at practice. She pushed herself and her teammates every step of the way this season, always with her head up and a smile on her face. Whether it was during fitness or simply completing a drill until the very end, Jess never once let up on her effort. During games, Jess never had a doubt that the team would be able to win games. Her commitment to this team was apparent on the field when she would run the ball from the defense to attack in order to help us score. She always had positive feedback to give at halftime and after the game to help boost the morale of the team. Off the field, Jess was constantly watching game film to see where she and the team could improve, and was preparing to play difficult opponents. Jess knew the strengths of her teammates and made sure she let them know when they were doing a great job. Jess has been a go-to leader on this team this past season. Her dedication, heart, drive, and positivity are truly going to be missed next season when she heads off to Towson University to play lacrosse. It will be very difficult to fill the shoes of Jessica Lampasone in the Kellenberg Lacrosse program. We wish her all the best in college, and cannot wait to see her thrive and grow as a player on the collegiate level.
Jillian Tocco
Most Improved Player
This season’s Most Improved player is junior Jillian Tocco. Over the course of this season, Jillian had proved that she deserved a spot in the starting line up. She always pushed herself to be better on the field. When new plays were learned, Jillian made sure that she asked questions to help the team be more successful when game time came around. As the season progressed, Jill proved that she had some of the best rides for transition defense for an attack player. Her speed and drive was incredible and she was able to earn critical caused-turnovers and ground balls for the team. Jillian also never said no to playing a new position if the coaches needed it. When we had to get fresh legs on the midfield, Jillian immediately took on the task of playing a position she had not played once all season. She plays cool under pressure, and was so critical to have on attack the last few games of the season when tension was high. Jillian worked incredibly hard this season, and we are so excited to see how she will make an impact on the team next year as a senior.
Katherine Shammas
Most Valuable Player
Dedication, leadership, heart. Those are three words that come to mind when we think of this season’s Most Valuable Player, Katherine Shammas. Katherine is a player that we could always turn to on attack, midfield, and defense. Her communication and leadership were critical everywhere she was on the field. Not only was Katherine a leader on our team, but she was one of the leading scorers in the league with 42 goals and 5 assists. She had a season high of 8 points in one game against Holy Trinity, and averaged 2.6 goals a game. She was also a key leader when we would run plays on attack. Katherine never made the game about her. She wanted to have every player as involved as possible and teach any players with confusion about their best options. She was another coach on the team. Down on defense, Katherine has a great sense of anticipation. She can read where a pass is going, and has the skills to take advantage of that. She held strong against tough opponents and had critical ground balls and caused turnovers. Katherine has given her heart and soul to the lacrosse program here at Kellenberg for the past four (+) years. No matter the situation, Katherine was a player that the coaches knew would lead by example. The other players on the team looked to her to lead, and she always did. Her skill, passion, and competitiveness are truly going to be missed next season when she heads off to play lacrosse at Fairfield University. We are so proud of Katherine and all of her success here in the Kellenberg Lacrosse program, and we cannot wait to see what she will accomplish on the collegiate level.

Boys Varsity Track
Norbert Okoye
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Norbert Okoye has been the heart and soul of our track and field program for the last two years. He has great leadership skills, is a gentleman, and is a force as a runner. Norbert’s commitment to the team has been a critical part of the team’s success this year. He is going to be missed next year as he will be attending Fordham University. This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Norbert Okoye.
Cole Curtis
Most Improved Player
Cole Curtis worked diligently throughout the season to improve his throwing. His discus throw improved by over 30 feet. This improvement helped him finish 3rd overall at the League Championship in that event. His performance at the meet was critical to helping his grade secure the runner-up plaque. The Spring Track & Field Most Improved Award goes to Cole Curtis.
Jaden Lyons
Most Valuable Player
Jayden Lyons is arguably the most talented athlete to ever put on a Firebird Track and Field uniform. This is no small feat considering that Kellenberg has had numerous National Champions, All Americans, and All-State athletes run for the team. Jayden was an All-State runner at the Indoor Track & Field State Championship. Earlier this season, Jayden broke Brian Schmidt’s 15-year-old school record in the 400. Jayden will be missed next year. He will be attending Track & Field Powerhouse University of Virginia.

Girls Varsity Track
Sophia Henderson
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
A great poet once wrote, “If you stay still, the earth buries you, ready or not.” This young woman never stood still, no matter what. For four years, twelve seasons, she never stopped. She kept coming, staying committed to being a part of a bigger whole than herself. Whether or not she wasn’t winning races, she kept coming. Whether or not she never saw her name in Newsday, nor heard her name on the morning announcements, or didn’t get selected to a fun Invitational Meet, she kept coming. Sophia Henderson kept coming to summer runs, Saturday workouts, afternoon practices, assigned meets; she just kept coming, giving her best, honoring her commitment, honoring and respecting her teammates. She came the way the man whose name honors this award, came always for his employer, his family, his colleagues. She knows “the dedicated life is worth living…you must give with all your heart.” That long commitment resulted in Sophia scoring in a brand new event for her- the grueling steeplechase and the 4×800 relay in her second to last high school race. Nothing could be more reassuring than that, that Sophia’s commitment to caring, working, believing, was as large as the sport itself.
Klaudia Kurek
Most Improved Player
In track and field we refer to the hurdlers and jumpers as the “skill athletes.” This young woman was honing her skills back in the fall during the cross country season, training other aspects of herself that would condition her, and round her into a greater athlete than she knew she would become. This spring season she emerged as a top high jumper in the Catholic league, a steady, consistent hurdler, and a valuable sprint relay runer. Her commitment led to huge improvements and we are honored tonight to award Klaudia Kurek as our Most Improved Performer.
Kathleen Healy
Most Valuable Player
Kathleen Healy knows the wise adage that “you can’t test courage cautiously, and all things are difficult before they are easy.” If you witnessed her win the NSCHSGAA Championship steeplechase for the second year in a row this week, you might have thought “that came easy.” Rather, Kathleen’s victories come from a litany of lonely miles run, grueling track repeat intervals, barrier work, and core repeats. She has been a major anchor leg in several distance relays this season. She was the key leg on the winning 4×1600 relay at the Nanuet Relays, the 4×800 at the FDR “Race at the Oval Office Invitational,” and several other relays. These have all complimented her favorite event- the grueling steeplechase. She has never been cautious in her preparation for success, and in her execution of success. On a 90 degree championship meet day, she not only won the steeple, but took silver in the 3000meters, and helped the 4×800 relay score. We wish her well in her promising future at St. John’s University and beyond, and we are honored tonight to award Kathleen Healy our MVP award winner.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Ryan Foley
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Ryan Foley is a shut down defensemen who consistently played the other team’s best offensive player. Ryan recorded a remarkable 33 caused turnovers this year against these top opponents. His commitment to the team in the offseason and also during the season earned him to be name team captain. Ryan is going to continue his play next year at the top ranked University of Tampa. He coaching staff wishes him the best of luck and is confident that his best lacrosse play is still ahead of him!
Julian Pollina
Most Improved Player
Julian is the unsung hero of our team. He is the guy that makes the little plays and whose name will never appear in the paper, but without him we could not have been successful. Julian made his living this year a our top defensive midfielder. He played almost every wing on the faceoff and would clear the ball for us in a game only 80 percent of the time. Julian’s c dedication to the team to commit himself to the defensive midfielder position and to continue to improve at that position over the past two years is nothing short of exceptional. The coaching staff wished Julan best of luck next year as he continues his studies at Texas A&M.
Adrian Nowak
Most Valuable Player
Adrian tallied a remarkable 79 points in the regular season with 40 goals and 39 assists. He is a defensive matchup nightmare for other teams to have to game scheme against as he averaged 4.8 points per game throughout the season. Adrian’s skill earned him honors as an “honorable mention ALL American” for the CHSAA this year. His dedication to the team and ability to elevate the play of his teammates is nothing short of remarkable. We wish Adrian all the luck next year at St. John’s University.

Varsity Baseball
Ryan Glupe
Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Senior Ryan Glupe is a true team player in every aspect. His commitment to get better each and every day did not start in March and end in May. Instead, Ryan made a conscious effort to get better throughout the year when “no one was watching” in the offseason. Compared to his previous season, Ryan lowered his ERA from 4.77 to a team leading 1.31. He finished 3rd in the league in strikeouts and 7th in ERA. When Ryan wasn’t pitching, he was the most involved in the game cheering on his teammates, involved in strategy, and even jumping up to get a foul ball. Ryan’s commitment and dedication to the baseball program since he was in the Latin School has blossomed each year. We wish nothing but success to Ryan as he continues his future at Bentley University.
Ryan Wasserman
Most Improved Player
Senior Ryan Wasserman came into tryouts this past March a completely different player. It was evident that he had put time and work in at the gym and the batting cage after coming back from an arm injury that sidelined him for most of his Junior season. Motivated to prove he’s one of the best players in the program, Ryan kept his head down and continued to grind at practice awaiting his opportunity when it arrived. Ryan’s presence in the lineup ignited the team both offensively and defensively. He ended the season with a .300 batting average, 6th in the league in doubles, and a game changer at second base by utilizing his speed. The baseball program would like to congratulate Ryan on his hard work and success this year. We wish him nothing but the best as he continues his baseball career at Farmingdale State College next year.
Brendan McCann
Most Valuable Player
Senior Brendan McCann was the table setter all season for the team in all respects. Brendan was a starting pitcher, our starting centerfielder, and a constant bat towards the top of our batting order. When Brendan was on his game, the team was winning. With game-changing speed and a willingness to be “coachable”, Brendan was the greatest threat on the field for all opponents. Brendan finished the year with a .333 batting average, tied for 3rd in the league in triples, and 10th in stolen bases. On the mound, Brendan went 6-1, tied for the league lead in wins, with a 1.58 ERA. Brendan was one of the most versatile and important players in the league and we wish him luck as he continues his baseball career at Pace University.
