Softball
The 2024 Varsity Softball Season began with a protracted tryout process due to a very rainy first week of the season. The passion and talent of the student – athletes made the coaches take a long hard look before making decisions. This year the Varsity squad formed at 17 players, the largest number in school history. The next week the team made its annual retreat to Founders Hollow and the laughs and bonding began immediately. Next, the team took on some top competition in scrimmages. Despite starting the season with 2 losses to top rated St. Joseph by the Sea and Molloy, the team went on a ten game winning streak in late April. The team earned some great victories against top tier competition, beating teams such as Calhoun, Oceanside, East Islip, Massapequa and Ballston Spa. In late April the team made a very clear statement battling St. Anthony’s into extra innings. In mid April the team held its annual charity game. The team defeated Clarke HS in the non league contest; but more importantly, they raised over $4600.00 for the Don Monti Cancer Center at Huntington Hospital. As the regular season concluded, the Firebirds have amassed a 15 wins and 6 losses record and the # 2 seed in the NSCHSGAA Softball Playoffs. The coaches appreciate the loyal support and energy as displayed by the friends and parents of the team this past season. Additionally, the coaches are very grateful for the leadership exhibited by the team’s three captains, Ariana Corrente, Julia Maniscalco and Natalie McMichael.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Molly Silecchia
One of the unique challenges of creating a positive team culture in high school athletics is the modern spirit of individual statistics and accomplishments. Players are often only concerned with their performance and their accolades. Emotions ride on how the individual is performing regardless of team success or failure. This year the Varsity Softball team created a strong team culture. One player in particular, despite her considerable success on the field, never wavered in her spirit for encouraging her teammates and understanding the greater team concept. Whether in the game or on the bench, her mood and energy for the team never changed. At every practice she arrived with a smile and an enthusiasm to work hard, encourage others and have fun. Her unbridled enthusiasm for the game and the team concept was contagious at practice. Wherever she found herself on the field at practice, one would witness her working hard, trying to improve and enjoying the entire process. Never offering excuses and always accepting the responsibility for a misplay, this player led by example day in and day out. This year’s Varsity Softball Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner is Molly Silecchia.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Kaitlyn Larmann
The Varsity Softball team culture is all about daily improvement. All of the players have sharpened their softball IQ and physical skills; however, one player has shown extensive improvement both offensively and defensively. Over the first month of the year seven different players took reps and worked at playing third base. Everyone had their particular strong points, but this player provided the most consistency, moment to moment focus, and fearlessness at the hot corner. On the offensive side of the game she managed to lead the team in on base percentage at .547 with 14 hits and a team leading 13 walks which is almost three times the next highest total on the team. Batting at the bottom of the KMHS lineup, this player managed to turn the lineup over by being on base almost 60% of the time. For these reasons Kaitlyn Larmann is the Varsity Softball Most Improved Player.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Julia Maniscalco
Players who exhibit dynamism and flexibility in positions and situations often enable teams to go far beyond initial expectations. This year’s MVP is such a player. Defensively, she could start in the OF, but her great physical flexibility and ability to receive throws make her a tremendous asset at first base. Additionally, she can be brought in to pitch at any time, be it as a starter or reliever. Her fluid and ever evolving two seam fastball baffles hitters and umpires alike. Offensively, she finished the regular season leading the team in batting average, .483, hits with 28, doubles with 10, triples with 2, total bases at 42, and RBI’s with 24. Serving as one of the captains and emotional leaders of the team, this year’s Varsity Softball MVP is Julia Maniscalco.

Tennis
The Varsity Tennis program has grown over the past 5 years. The 2024 season brought experienced and novice players to the courts in greater numbers than any other season. We finished league play with a record of 3 – 6 and non-league 6 – 7 all our matches were close and believe it did not represent the abilities of our players. A highly competitive league, the boys fought hard and our success as a Varsity sport was upheld by the team’s presence on and off the court. During practice and in every match their passion for tennis and sportsmanship displayed, was a true representation of what an athlete should be. From the beginning of the season to present, all these young players improved greatly. Our underclassmen competed in the NSCHSAA JV Tournament and our players did not disappoint. Second singles Sophomore Viktor Lorentz, was victorious earning the singles champion title, and Junior James Takes earned a spot in the semi finals. Our doubles teams fought hard resulting with Junior Gavin Baldwin and John Pizzo as finalists . But all the young men who competed showed promise and determination throughout their matches. During the regular season and in playoffs, first singles Zachary Olivera went 4-0 against the number one seed from St. Anthony’s, a first in Kellenberg history! Overall the boys had a winning record in both doubles and singles matches. Our singles players went 20-15 and our doubles teams 23-17 which is another great accomplishment. The NSCHSAA Individual Varsity Tournament was held today at St. Charles Tennis Complex. Kellenberg will be competing with their starting lineup and expect great competition! Our seniors James Abruzzo, Michael Carinci, Joseph Federl, Michael Lee, Zach Oliveira, John Pizzo, Brendan Riordan, Robert Sileo, Thaddeus Springer, Sean Stajuana, Kevin Vitale and Marvin Suber Williams will be greatly missed, but because of them they have paved the way for Kellenberg Tennis and we can expect great successes for years to come.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Robert Damian Sileo
The boys varsity tennis team has been honored to have Robert “Damian” Sileo for the past few years. Damian demonstrated a high level of play, good sportsmanship, and commitment to his team. During the off season, he continued to practice and assisted the girls varsity tennis team as Manager. Damian’s success on the courts did not stop there, he excelled academically which placed him on the honor roll every trimester since Freshman year. This fall Damian will head to Purdue to study Cyber Security. We will miss Damian and look forward to following all his future successes!
Most Improved Player Award Winner
James Abruzzo
James has been a starting player since his Freshman year. Every year his commitment to the team and the sport was obvious. This year James secured his 3rd singles position at tryouts and continued to improve each match versus the best of the league. Off the court James excels academically with a three year cumulative average over 94% James is a well rounded Kellenberg athlete who has performed with our Drama productions, competed nationally with the Speech and Debate Team and performed with XLT. We look forward to watching James succeed throughout his collegiate years and beyond.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
John Pizzo
Over the past three seasons, Captain John Pizzo has brought an energy and passion like no other. His positive encouragement for his teammates and drive to improve landed John a starting position on the team this season. The most valuable player is defined as the “player who contributes the most to his teams success” and by definition he has. John leads by example on and off the court, always has an encouraging word for his teammates and is the ultimate sportsman on the courts. With his positive and friendly demeanor it was not a surprise he received an unanimous vote from his teammates to be Captain. During the season, John and his partner were finalists of the NSCHSAA JV Doubles Tournament just falling short of the win. Win or lose John always displayed great sportsmanship and Kellenberg COR values. John will be greatly missed! We wish him continued success at Manhattan College where he will study Computer Science.

Girls Golf
As the 2023-24 girls’ golf season began with tryouts indoors on a golf simulator in Westbury, there was one theme from a song that was constantly playing in my coaching brain. That song was “Find Your Way Back” by the Jefferson Starship. Could our team find its way back to another championship? If the team were going to be there in May, some lingering questions had to be answered during tryouts, practices, and matches. Could our top two golfers continue with their great form as individual League Champion and State CHSAA Champion? Are there other golfers on the team who were willing to step up in the lineup and play their game when called upon? Are there any new golfers to the team who can make an important contribution to the team’s chances in a match? Well, to quote the band Asia, “Only Time Will Tell.” As the season started, Newsday had highlighted the team’s top two golfers Cat Slade and Bridget LaRosa, as part of its Top 20 players to watch on Long Island. With convincing wins against Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist, and Sacred Heart, the team was off to a good start. However, a tough loss against rival St. Anthony’s gave the team a moment of pause, and as a coach I had to make a couple of adjustments to keep the girls on track. Rebounding from that loss, the team again defeated Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist, and Sacred Heart but suffered a second, however closer, loss to St. Anthony’s. As the playoffs began, the team faced Sacred Heart in a #2 seed v. #3 seed matchup. With a 4 ½- ½ victory, the team was on to the Championship Match for the second year in a row to take on St. Anthony’s. Would the team avenge its earlier losses? Would all the questions I had in the beginning of the year be answered? On that rainy Friday, May 10th, the girls played their best golf of the year with Cat Slade and Bridget LaRosa shooting 3 over par and 1 over par respectively to defeat their opponents. All the team needed was one more point to secure a back-to-back championship. Our #3 golfer, freshman Gabby DeBono, battled back from being two holes down to win her match and seal the victory. Both Madison Firoz and Orla Cormican played well in the victory. The team secured its second team championship in two years. And that song I had heard in my head back in March, “Find Your Way Back,” rings true. We found our way back to another championship, found our way back to great golf form, and found our way back to new players making an important contribution to a great season. Thank you, ladies, for a great season that I’m sure you won’t forget and I know that the memories for me will be fonder with each passing day of the summer until we meet again next spring.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Bridget LaRosa
Bridget LaRosa demonstrates to her teammates and her classmates the definition of commitment. Many people probably do not know that Bridget is a three-season athlete, and some might think that the golf season might be a time in which Bridget would “take it easy.”
Well, the phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” definitely applies to Bridget because she does not take a moment off. In fact, as her coach I would think the golf season is her most intense season in terms of physical and mental preparation. She is constantly working on her golf game and committed to be the best player and best teammate. When the team is preparing for a match, Bridget is always committed and focused on a team victory and not just her individual statistics, and she had an outstanding match record of 9 wins and 1 loss during the season. I know her mother will appreciate Bridget winning this award since she is a Kellenberg Memorial alumna and has great memories of Mr. Bernie Ward.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Madison Firoz
Madison Firoz’s golf skills were called upon by her coach and her teammates so many times throughout the season. As a golfer who had previously played in the #5 spot and probably not as often as she would like, this season she was called upon to be a steady force in the #4 spot on a regular basis. Her improved play throughout the season showed in her 5 win, 3 loss, and 1 tie record. Madison’s improvement was not only in her golf game but also in her mental game. Little did she know that her coach was counting on her to be a calming force for some of the other golfers that she was paired with during the season in critical matches. Her calm demeanor influenced her playing partners and encouraged them to play their best game. Madison has been a great member of this team, and her influence on her teammates will bear much fruit in the future after she graduates from Kellenberg Memorial.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Cat Slade
How valuable is Cat Slade to the 2024 Girls’ Golf team? Let me count the ways. She is the one golfer that the entire team looks up to. Girls on other teams know when they play her in a match that Cat is the best player in the league who will always bring her A game. Cat saw the mark that other previous great Kellenberg girls left on the program and the league and said, “Thanks ladies, but hold my water!” A great teammate and an outstanding young woman who is planning to major in education, Cat leaves the program with a four-year record of 39 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. She has been a League Champion, a State Champion, and a representative at numerous tournaments as Kellenberg’s and the CHSAA’s best golfer. It has been an honor and a pleasure to see Cat accomplish all that she has. Her teammates and I will be watching from a distance as she continues her golf career in college at Adelphi University.

Boys Lacrosse
Each lacrosse season, the coaching staff sets goals for the year, and those goals remain relatively consistent. 1. Compete every day, 2. Have a winning mentality in May, and 3. Win a State Championship. However, each year the challenge to the coaches is that we have a new set of players that we have to convince to “buy in” to our goals.
This year, I personally felt that the challenge of getting kids to “buy in” was an easy one. Attendance at offseason workouts was consistently higher than years past. Each week in the winter, 20 players would travel to Stony Brook to play an indoor game at 9pm against some of the top teams on Long Island, and after practices, players would stick around to workout in the weight room. Everyone was doing the right thing. I believe it was this extra work that has given this team an edge in our close games this year. Last year we had 4 games decided by 2 or fewer goals and we lost 3 of them. So far this year, we’ve had 4 games decided by 1 goal, and we’ve won 3 of them. The difference is in the offseason preparation.
This team has also shown unmatched bravery and resilience in the face of extreme adversity. The loss of Chris Battaglia rocked this team, and the school, to its core. But what I witnessed after these young men lost a friend and teammate was a team picking each other up when they were down, a team keeping the faith when it seemed impossible, and a team showing dedication to playing this season for something bigger than themselves, and that ability is greater than any award they can win.
I believe we have competed each and every day in practice and in games, and we are on a 4-game winning streak since May 1st. Now we only have one goal left to achieve, and we get the chance to achieve that goal of winning a State Championship on May 26th out on Matthew Field. Congratulations to all of our players and we wish our seniors the best of luck in the future!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Michael Felicetti
Michael has been on varsity for 3 years, and has been a consistent presence at offseason practices and winter games for 4 years. This year, he has committed himself to his role as a captain by creating an open line of communication with the coaching staff and leading his teammates by example. Michael is always near the front of the line in conditioning, and is always cheering his teammates on to finish their reps. Michael is an asset that our team will miss in the years to come, but the coaches all look forward to watching Michael succeed at the next level. The coaches are honored to present Michael with the prestigious Berne Ward Commitment Award!
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Jack Crotty
Jack is a player that, last year as a junior, saw action in a handful of games and scored 5 points. This past year, Jack has put in the work on the field and in the weight room and is now an integral part of our offense as a midfielder with 29 points while also taking faceoffs and playing attack when needed. Jack has truly become a player that demands attention from the defense, which opens up looks for other players as well. The coaches are proud of Jack’s efforts and hope to see his continued improvement during his college career!
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Michael Anzelone
Michael is a three-year starter and a two year captain for this team. When looking for a player to fill in at a position, the first question the coaches ask themselves is, “Can Anzelone do it?” That is the true meaning of valuable. Michael is one of the leaders of our offense, plays on the faceoff wing 50% of the time, and is comfortable playing defensive midfield whenever the opportunity arises. Off the field, Michael consistently coordinates gameday equipment and is (more often than not) carrying the ball bucket back and forth to the practice field/locker room every day. Michael’s presence will truly be missed after this season, but we believe he has set a high standard for future captains to live up to. Congratulations Michael!

Boys Golf
The 2024 Boy’s Golf Team was the largest golf team in school history. The 22 golfers were a pleasure to coach. The team was led by captain Ciaran Regan who finished the season with a 9 and 1 record. More important than his record was the amount of time he would spend working with the players. It was like the team had their own pro. The boys from last year’s team improved greatly. Jude Martucci became our number two golfer as a sophomore. Owen Cunningham qualified for the league tournament along with seven of his teammates. Jake Galla and Ryan Dennean made huge contributions to the team in their first season on the team. Richard Deem, another newcomer to the program, and John Seward also qualified for the NSCHSAA Tournament. The team graduates two seniors so 20 kids will return to next year’s team. The future of the program looks brighter than ever!
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Brendan Spear
Brendan’s commitment to becoming a better golfer started last year when he began coming to the weight room in the morning. He rarely missed a day since then. Brendan Spear is a terrific kid, mature beyond his years. He is a wonderful teammate and is highly respected by all the players on the team. Having Brendan on the team is like having an assistant coach. He’s always first on the bus to matches and practices and never has to be told what to do twice. Brendan Spear is this year’s Bernie Ward Commitment award Winner!
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Jude Martucci
Jude Martucci was a good player last year but just wasn’t where he wanted to be. This year Jude made huge strides to becoming the great player he will eventually become. Every aspect of Jude’s game has improved since last year. He crushes his driver and led the team in fairways hit. His Greens in Regulation improved drastically. But where Jude excelled most was putting. Jude was second on the team in Putting Average. He catapulted to being our number two golfer in just his sophomore year. Jude Martucci is this year’s Most Improved Award Winner.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Ciaran Regan
Ciaran Regan has been a huge part of the program since he entered the building. Arguably one of the best players in school history, Ciaran was incredible to watch. He hits the ball a mile and putts with the confidence of a pro. But Ciaran is much more than that. Ciaran has been a team leader and an incredible teammate. Well-liked by all his teammates, Ciaran is a great young man. This year’s MVP is Ciaran Regan

Baseball
This past March, 50 Sophomore, Junior and Senior baseball candidates tried out for a Varsity baseball team that was coming off of a very successful 2023 season. For the fourth year in a row, the Kellenberg Varsity Baseball team had a Top 5 preseason ranking in all of Nassau County according to Newsday, which comes with high expectations and the reality that opponents will be preparing to play their best game against us. Preseason workouts started in the Fall and continued throughout the entire winter under the leadership of our 16 returning Seniors who understood the commitment necessary to field a championship caliber team in one of the most competitive leagues in the state of New York. We opened the league season against St. John the Baptist who was not projected to be one of the top teams in the league, however they defeated us both times and put us immediately in last place at 0-2. After a mandatory team meeting following the St. John’s series, Easter recess allowed us to clear our minds for 4 days and start fresh as we looked ahead to our next series. Over the next 5 weeks, including the entire month of April, the boys didn’t lose a single game, including series sweeps of St. Anthony’s, Chaminade, St. Mary’s, and all 3 of our Brooklyn/Queens League opponents. The team finished with a 14-5 overall record, while scoring a league best 127 runs in 17 league games and earning a first-round bye in the playoffs. Seniors Kenny Noe, Tommy Pasqua, Jimmy Ernst, Will Cowan, and Michael D’Angelo all played an integral role in the offense this season with help from Juniors Lucas Vamvaketis, Mario Coscia, and Ryan Langner. This year’s pitching staff was anchored by Seniors Matt Reiter and Brian Cadieux along with Junior Jack Durso. A strong supporting staff on the mound included Seniors Will Celentano, Dimitrios Bardis, and Dylan Ward along with newcomers Eric Resseger, Kevin Prosceo, and Chris Parisi. Congratulations to all of our Seniors on a tremendous four years of baseball at Kellenberg.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Jimmy Ernst
Senior Jimmy Ernst is a true team player in every definition of the term. As a Division 1 catcher committed to Long Island University, Jimmy naturally became the leader of the Varsity baseball team this year. He would coordinate offseason workouts, make sure equipment was taken care of, and led by example in many ways. Jimmy had a tremendous season in the most difficult league on Long Island. Statistically, Jimmy finished the season leading all Catchers in the league in Batting Average (.396), Hits (19), Doubles (4), and RBI’s (17). Jimmy has a bright baseball future ahead and will always be an important member of the Kellenberg Baseball Program.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Will Cowan
Senior Will Cowan came into tryouts this past March a completely different player from last season, both physically and mentally. Motivated to prove he’s one of the best players in the league after committing to Divison 1 St. John’s University, Will showed up in tremendous physical shape and ready to play every day at a high level. This season, Will finished in the Top 5 in the league in several major offensive categories such as Batting Average (.396), Hits (21), Doubles (6), Slugging Percentage (.679), RBI (20), and Homeruns (3). We look forward to watching Will’s continued growth and drive as a baseball player at the next level!
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Kenny Noe
Senior Kenny Noe is a 3-year player on the Varsity Baseball team, being called up as a sophomore in 2022. Committed to Division 1 Monmouth University, Kenny had one of the best seasons in program history this year. Kenny led the entire league in Batting Average (.532), Hits (27), Slugging Percentage (.784) and tied for Homeruns (3). Kenny was also Top 2 in RBI and Top 4 in Doubles, all while playing the premier position of shortstop. Kenny separated himself from the rest of the league right from the start of the season and didn’t look back. His transformation as a leader and a baseball player over the past 3 season has been remarkable and we couldn’t be more proud of him.

Volleyball
Ladies and gentlemen, coaches, players, managers, parents and fans, it is my distinct pleasure to stand before you today to reflect upon the 2024 boys’ varsity volleyball season. As we gather here to celebrate these young men, let us acknowledge their achievements, for they are not merely victories on a scoreboard, but testaments to the dedication, unity, and spirit of an incredible team.
This season, our boys took to the court with passion, determination, and a shared vision of success. Our team motto was molded after the North Carolina State Men’s basketball team this past year and their NCAA final four run when we asked the boys to “be the best version of us”. The team faced daily challenges with grit and resilience, never losing sight of their goal. And through their unwavering commitment to excellence, they emerged triumphant, finishing with a remarkable record of 14 wins and just 1 loss and a game record of 46 and 9. This also included being the first team in four years to defeat Chaminade not only once but twice during the regular season and also in the final. At the conclusion of the season the team was ranked by max preps as number 6 in New York State.
Looking beyond the numbers, our boys demonstrated the true essence of sportsmanship and camaraderie. They lifted each other up in moments of adversity, celebrated together in moments of triumph, and embodied the values of teamwork, integrity, and respect.
Today, the team stands as champions, not only because of our victories but because of the character and heart that define this team. We were the regular-season champions and overall NSCHSAA champions, a title earned through hard work, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of greatness.
As we reflect on this season, let us cherish the memories we have created, the lessons we have learned, and the bonds we have forged. Let us carry the spirit of this team with us, knowing that together, there is no challenge too great, no obstacle too daunting.
To my coaches (Michael, Brendan and Conor) and managers (Kennedy, Jackie, Grace, Olivia and Brooke), thank you for your guidance, your wisdom, and your unwavering belief in these young men. Your dedication has inspired us all and has played an instrumental role in our success.
As we look to the future, let us carry the lessons learned and the memories shared with us by our four graduating seniors (Ed, Connor, Brady and Chris). Let us continue to strive for excellence, to push the boundaries of what is possible, and to always remember the journey that brought us to this moment.

Most Improved Player Award Winner
Michael Tagios
In the competitive world of volleyball, where every player strives for excellence, there emerges a story of remarkable transformation and growth. Meet Sophomore Michael Tagios, a basketball player originally who has defied expectations and emerged as the most improved volleyball player of the season.
At the outset, Michael was known for their raw talent but lacked the refined skills and consistency required to excel at the highest level.
Through unwavering dedication and countless hours of hard work, Michael honed his technical abilities, refining his serving, passing, setting, and hitting skills. He sought guidance from coaches, studied the game meticulously, and embraced every opportunity to learn and grow.
But it wasn’t just his physical skills that underwent a transformation. Michael also cultivated a champion’s mindset, learning to overcome setbacks, embrace challenges, and push past his limits.
As the season progressed, Michael’s improvement became impossible to ignore. He emerged as a force to be reckoned with on the court, delivering standout performances and leading the team to victory with his outside attack, eventually leading the team in hitting percentage as well as New York State.
By the end of the season, Michael had not only surpassed his own expectations but had also earned every coach’s trust.
It has been an absolute honor and privilege to be a part of Michael ’s growth and the program is very excited for the next two years of volleyball!

Girls Lacrosse
The girls varsity lacrosse team had a remarkable season filled with camaraderie and growth, both individually and as a team. The team kicked off the season with determination and a strong focus on enhancing skills. The girls learned each others strengths and weaknesses and helped push one another to achieve greatness. Their cohesion on the field and supportive atmosphere off the field laid the foundation for success. The girls had great team victories against Holy Trinity, JFK, OLMA, St. Dominics, St. Johns, and Locust Valley. The team also showed tremendous play in tight match-ups against Massapequa, Long Beach, North Shore, Wantagh, and Sacred Heart. The girls varsity lacrosse team remained resilient and learned valuable lessons from each of these games that often extended beyond the lacrosse field. These student athletes, and the seniors in particular, have left behind a legacy of excellence and sisterhood that will inspire future generations of players. This team’s journey was not only about wins and losses but also about the bonds forged and the growth experienced as a family. We are very excited for the future of this team and can’t wait to see what this group will accomplish in the years to come.

Brigid Brown
Devotion. Dedication. Loyalty. These are a few words that come to mind when thinking of who is most deserving of the 2024 Bernie Ward Commitment Award. Senior, captain Brigid Brown brings so much positivity, light, and skill to our team! Day in and day out she shows how much she loves and supports her teammates and our program. The coaching staff refers to her as the team’s ultimate hype girl. She is every player’s biggest cheerleader and constantly lets other players know when she is impressed by them and proud of them. As a three year varsity player, she helped lead our attack to greatness with goals, assists, ground balls, caused turn-overs, and zeal! She pushes the team to be their very best. As a captain and leader, she would take extra time to walk other attack players and midfielders through our attack plays and motions because she wanted to make the team as successful as possible. Consistently lifting her teammates up with unwavering support and encouragement, Brigid Brown serves as the heartbeat of the team. Her uplifting spirit and genuine cheers elevate the entire team, fostering a culture of unity, resilience, and shared success. Congratulations, Brig!
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Erin Occhino
This year’s girls varsity lacrosse most improved player is awarded to senior, captain Erin Occhino. Erin is a three-year member of the team. She was requested to be moved to varsity due to her skill, lacrosse IQ, and athleticism. As a player who already possessed a great amount of talent, the coaching staff has been blown away by the strides in consistent play that she has made this year. As a midfielder, Erin has to run the entire field and be a force and a threat on both attack and defense. An inner fire emerged this season, igniting a newfound intensity and tenacity in her gameplay. Whether it’s battling for possession or stepping up in crucial moments, she showcases a relentless drive to succeed. Erin Occhino has not disappointed this year! She has become one of the team’s go-to draw control specialists which has enabled the team to gain countless possessions. Erin’s drive and effort in the midfield, goals and assists on attack, and her strength and agility on defense have not gone unnoticed. She has demonstrated mental and physical toughness throughout the season and we are so proud of her! Congratulations, Ocho!
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Delaney Clark
This year’s most valuable is awarded to a player who is not only a phenomenal lacrosse player, but a model student-athlete. Junior captain, Delaney Clark, exemplifies the true essence of teamwork and selflessness. She quite literally put her body on the line day after day and rarely asked for a break and never, ever complained. The amount of pressure that was on her as the team’s lone goalie could have proved too much to handle for some, but Delaney was up for the challenge. Delaney has tallied well over 250 saves in her two years on varsity while going up against the fiercest of competition. Our sole goaltender prioritized the collective goals of her team even when she was having a tough day or was feeling ill. Her unwavering dedication to the team’s success, coupled with her humility and sacrifice helped elevate the team. Her coachability and desire to improve demonstrate what it means to be a team player. She leads by example. Delaney also possesses a deep admiration and appreciation for her team. During practices, she applauds and congratulates each player that scores on her during a drill or practice play. Besides her vocalness and save percentage, Delaney clears the ball with patience and confidence. She also has no problem running up the field in transition with one or more players defending her to make a successful clear. Not only was she named Newsday top 100 players, she was also named a top 10 goalie for Long Island. Delaney Clark is one of a kind, and this year’s girls lacrosse most valuable player!

The Spring crew season began way back in March, when our rowers had to brave the cold to get valuable practice time on the water. In some instances, mother nature’s angry seas deferred the team from being able to row. Despite these setbacks, the team rallied to make themselves better each day they were on the water.
The crew team also welcomed several new rowers this season. Each one was determined to get better every day to help push their boats to success towards the end of the season.
This competitive Spring crew season was marked by nothing but resilience and perseverance. Suffering devastating losses at the first two regattas of the season, the team did not feel defeated. Instead, they used it as motivation to come back stronger and faster during the championship season in Manhasset and Saratoga. This patience and trusting the process led the team to incredible success at the Long Island Championship Regatta and New York State Scholastic Rowing championship regatta. The highlights of this championship season include:
A first place finish in the men’s JV 4+ category at Long Island Championships
A first place finish in the women’s JV 8+ category at LIC
A 14th place overall finish in the men’s novice 4+ category at States
Our varsity 4+ advancing to the next round in a competitive category
A 6th place finish in the men’s JV 4+ category at States
And a thrilling third place finish in the women’s JV 8+ category at States earning them a bronze medal.
The coaching staff is extremely proud of these achievements and the tremendous progress that this team made since the beginning of the year. This young team has an extremely bright future, and we look forward to the speed that they will gain over the next year.

Girls Track
Former elite distance runner, and renown writer Amby Burfoot once said “Our motivations for running, throwing, and jumping are absolutely central. because the physical act of them is much easier than the psychological energy it takes to do them…Take the motivation out of those individual exertions, and they don’t exist.” Recently, at the junior ring ceremony our Principal spoke about “Commissioning.” That is the act of formally choosing someone to do a special piece of work, or to formally ask for a special piece of work from someone. Thus, we were fortunate to have the senior members of the team “commission” motivation to our promising young team members. They learned about the virtues of resiliency from Ally Abrahams, Gabby Doris, and Danielle Tercynski. They learned about coolness under pressure, and humility from Sophia Conde, and Brooke Bowen. They learned about the joy of trying something new from Sophia Paulich and Zaria Pessoa, and they most certainly learned about the value of never, ever, giving up from Kayla Gornstein. They were a small group but one that surely has left an important, indelible mark on their young teammates. The spring season saw great highlights from a successful return to the Penn Relays, to the team title victory at both The Rye Relay Invitational Meet, and the Westbury Green and Gold Meet, to a very fine team performance finishing as runnerup this past weekend in the NSCHSGAA Championships. It’s worth noting that three of the seven NSCHSGAA Champions, namely Maya Hadpawat the high jump champion, Michaela Dennean, the 3000 meter champion, and Sophia Conde, the 4×400 gold medal winning anchor leg, never ran track until they came to Kellenberg. We are quite proud of that, and we our proud of not only our graduating seniors, but the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have absorbed the senior’s positive vibes, and our now fully “commissioned” for a great future in the sport.

Sophia Conde
In the winter track season a sudden fright came over the team and the coaching staff as after a terrific effort at the fabled armory, this young woman passed out. She soon came to, to the joy and relief of her teammates and coaches. It would have been easy for her to “hang it up,” or “back off the gas pedal” in her efforts. What did she do? She responded by going full throttle throughout the Spring season. She worked her way so consistently and arduously not only by becoming one of the CHSAA’s top quartermilers and running the anchor leg on Kellenberg’s championship 4×400 Gold Medal NSCHSGAA relay, but filling in the 200 and the 800 when needed. She anchored Kellenberg’s fastest 4×4 relay in six years, as well as running on Kellenberg’s first Invitational winning 4×800 relay in that same amount of years at The Rye Relays. She is the picture of s student-athlete, and her poise, grace, and humility will not be forgotten. We are honored to award Sophia Conde with this meaningful award.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Sienna Pimentel
The strength buildup of this young woman’s competing in cross country and the two track seasons has paid off in dividends. She improved dramatically in her key event the 400 intermediate hurdles, a nearly unheard of eleven (11) second drop in one year, attaining second place in the NSCHSGAA Championships in that event, garnering the bronze in the triple jump as part of the Kellenberg sweep, and running leg on the winning 4×400 relay. She has the determination of the biblical David, the heart of a lion, and the stride of a gazelle. Even better she has another year with her beloved team. We are honored to award the M.I.P. to junior Sienna Pimentel.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Maya Hadwapat
Maya Hadwapat came to Kellenberg because it was the school she felt very comfortable with. Coming out for track in the winter season, Maya’s new found sport seemed perfect for her. The coaching staff noticed this young woman’s coachability and talent in the “skill” events- the hurdles and the jumps early on. But that was just a trace of what was to come in the Spring. Maya won the trifecta in the NSCHSGAA Freshmen-Sophomore Championships by winning the high jump, the high hurdles, and the intermediate hurdles. She duplicated that feat in the CHSAA Freshman Intersectional Championship Meet a few short days later. At the Varsity league Meet she won the High Jump, and took the bronze in both the high hurdles, and the intermediate hurdles. Maya came in at the “perfect storm” of the combined coaching jumping expertise of jumps Coach Amanda Green, and hurdles Coach Lena Washington. It truly is a winning tri-combination of athlete and coaches and the future looks so very exciting. We are proud to award freshman Maya Hadwapat our Spring team MVP.

Boys Track
I want to thank all the coaches who have contributed to this year’s team’s success: Coach Moncada, our sprinting coach; Coach Capozzoli, our middle-distance coach; Coach Citrano, our throws coach; and Coach Gornstein, our distance coach. I also want to thank Coach Green and Dr. Lena Washington for all the help they gave us with the boys’ jumpers, hurdlers, and everything else.
Our team, a dynamic blend of individuals who excelled in various disciplines, sprinting, hurdles, jumps, throws, distance, and middle distance, has emerged as a formidable force in both track and field. Their unwavering dedication, discipline, and determination have propelled them to become one of the most successful boys track and field teams in the history of our school.
During the Invitational portion of the season, our team showcased numerous stellar performances. Some early season highlights included Evans Linzey’s remarkable achievement of breaking the elusive 11-second barrier in the 100 meters. Daniel Carsey’s record-breaking performance in the 110 Hurdles was another standout moment. Daniel Meenan’s impressive run in the 800 meters and the 4×100 meter relay team’s exceptional performance, comprising Mario Sanabria, Nicholas Baldwin, Damion Gordon, and Evans Linzey, who ran the 2nd fastest time in school history, were also noteworthy.
During the championship portion of the season, some of the best performances were turned in. Evans Linzey was a double gold medal winner in the 100-meter and 200-meter races and was nominated for Most Outstanding Runner for the NSCHSAA Championship Meet, an award he previously won twice. Daniel Carsey was also a double gold medal winner in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
With the Catholic State Championship, New York State Championship, and National Championship still to compete in, we are looking forward to seeing how far this team can go this year.
