On Wednesday, January 17, Molloy New Media Chairman, James Cohen, M.A., and Matt Applegate Ph.D., came to speak before a room full of Kellenberg Memorial students on the topic of virtual reality and social media. These men showed the group a different perspective of this field where creators and developers are putting together some out of this world technology.
Throughout the afternoon the students explored several different fields of virtual reality, including purely virtual reality, augmented reality where animation is infused with your current surroundings, and mixed reality, which is a combination of the two. The interest of the group was heightened further by the prospect of Facebook Spaces, a new program that enables two people in completely different locations to see each other through virtual reality and interact.
Kellenberg Memorial students will be given the opportunity to delve into the goals and boundaries of virtual reality as well as the academic study of memes and vlogging this upcoming summer at the Molloy New Media Camp. This virtual reality STEM talk was one of the most fascinating yet, and all students involved look forward to exploring more occupations in the field!
