Boys Varsity Track and Field
This season, our boys’ track and field team embraced a ‘strike while the iron is hot’ mindset, channeling our efforts on the track with precision and determination. Despite bidding farewell to Kavon Morris, our school record holder in the 100-meter dash, we welcomed back the core talent from last year, with some outstanding athletes stepping up to the challenge.
Our program found its strength in the sprints this year, with Evans Linzey continuing his dominance. Once again, he secured a triple gold medalist title at the league championships, earning him the League MVP for the second consecutive season—a remarkable feat in program history for a sprinter. Linzey broke his own school record in the 55-meter dash, marking his third school record achievement. His silver medal at the Catholic State Championships in the 55-meter dash also earned him a well-deserved spot in the State Federation Championship. His efforts have not only cemented himself as one of the best athletes in program history, but as one of the best athletes in school history.
Adding to the sprint success, the collective efforts of Nicolas Baldwin, Mario Sanabria, Daniel Carsey, Ethan Linzey, Ethan Thomas, Christian DaCosta, Felipe Montes, and freshman Damion Gordon Jr. provided crucial depth to the team. Nicolas, Mario, and Damion joined Linzey in earning league gold in the 4×200 relay. Carsey secured a silver medal in the league championships in the 55 hurdles, solidifying his position as the third-best indoor hurdler in school history. The quartet of Carsey, Ethan, Nicolas, and Mario also earned silver medals at the Catholic State Championships, securing their place in the State Federation Championships. Damion Gordon Jr. showcased his potential by winning the freshman Catholic State Title in the 55-meter dash, marking him as the future of our program.
In the throws, seniors Chimebuka Okigbo and Benito Monreforte led the way. Buka earned a top 10 finish in the shot put, while Beni secured a top 10 finish in the weight throw at the league championships. Freshmen Christian Mahfood and John Kitson showcased themselves as perennial favorites in the shot with Christian winning gold in all but one meet. Sophomore Daniel Meenan emerged as the clear leader in distance events, earning a bronze medal in the 1000-meter run at the league championships.
A special thank you goes out to our seniors, including Matthew Carroll, Daniel Carsey, Aidan Donnelly, Matthew Gavagan, Scott Harford, Thomas Howell, Thierry Jean-Calixte, Andrew Kaiser, Kenny Kaywood, Evans Linzey, Justin McKenzie, Benito Monteforte, Felipe Montes, Max Noel, Kevin O’Keefe, Chimebuka Okigbo, Bryce Sarju, Ethan Thomas, and Vincent Vacchiano. Your leadership and dedication have been invaluable to our team’s success.

Danny Carsey has truly risen to the occasion in the wake of key senior departures from the previous year. Demonstrating remarkable improvement across various disciplines, he has shattered personal records in the long jump, 200 meters, 400 meters, and the 55-meter hurdles. His exceptional journey extended to the prestigious Long Island Elite Invitational, where Carsey emerged as a finalist in the 55 hurdles, achieving two personal bests in the process. With a remarkable PR of 8.06, he now shares the #5 all-time spot at Kellenberg, establishing himself as one of the best individuals in the event’s history within our school. Girls Varsity Bowling
This championship bowling season unfolded with an air of excitement and anticipation, drawing avid fans and seasoned competitors alike into the thrilling world of strikes and spares. We started the season in November with our tryouts and throughout the next few weeks our team started to transform. We began hitting our spares and gaining more confidence. We had our team retreat in December, and we learned a lot about one another and how competitive we can be when the scavenger hunt results were being announced. We continued that momentum through the first half of the season with having only one loss against St. John the Baptist. The second half of the season began in January, and we were full steam ahead. The girls came out strong on a string pin lane against St. Mary’s and continued bowling well. We ended the regular season tied for first with a record of 10-2, moving us into the first round of playoffs. We won our quarterfinal match with ease and moved onto the semifinals against St. Anthony’s. During our semifinals the atmosphere at Wantagh lanes was filled with excitement and sportsmanship. We won the match by a score of 6-3 bowling some of the best matches we had seen all year. The next day we faced St. John the Baptist in the championship, they were the only team we had lost to all season. Your firebirds came out ready to play! Their excitement, energy and enthusiasm were contagious! Our B team won the first game by about 100 pins and our A team had only lost by a single pin. Game two rolls along and we split again losing some of our lead. In our huddle between games, I said to the girls the team that bowls their best this game will win the match, so bowl your best but of course have some fun! Well, this was the most exciting bowling match I have ever witnessed as a coach. Our B team was on fire hitting spares and strikes and hitting our personal bests. Our A team continued to battle but our anchor Kerri Callahan was cool, calm, and collective. She bowled 11 strikes in a row! Record breaking for the league and school. She ended the game with a 298 and this helped us secure the win. These 11 girls came together to win the League Championship by a score of 6-3 and each and every one of you should be incredibly proud of your accomplishments. This could not have been done if you did not all work together and support one another throughout the entire season, I am so proud of how much you all improved and accomplished the goal, so Congratulations! We also qualified 6 bowlers, Kerri, Emma, Jenna, Grace, Chloe, and Colleen for individuals and 3 bowlers, Kerri, Jenna, and Emma for our first ever state tournament this past weekend. This season was one for the record books! Amazing job ladies, I look forward to our future seasons.
Bernie Ward Commitment Award Winner
Grace Pizzardi
Grace Pizzardi has been a 4-year athlete on the bowling team and contributed to the championship her freshman year and then again, this year as a senior. This year Grace was voted team captain and her commitment to that role was extraordinary. She took the new members of our team under her wing and encouraged each of her teammates to do their very best. Although she had some tough days this season her smile never faded, and she was 100% committed to the team. Throughout her 4 years her bowling improved, and she became more confident in her abilities. I will miss her speeches to the team and her excitement for her teammates, but I wish you the best of luck in all that you do.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Jenna Biscotti
Jenna Biscotti has been a 4-year athlete on the bowling team, but her time goes back to Latin School when she would come to cheer on her older brother. This year Jenna became a vital part of our B team and someone we could rely on to also try her best. At the end of the season Jenna improved tremendously and became consistent with her scores and started to hit her personal bests. She qualified for the individual championship as well as our first ever State Tournament. You should be very proud of your 2 league championships in your career. Jenna was also a team captain and encouraged her teammates each and every day. I will miss you next year but wish you the very best in all that you do!
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Kerri Callahan
Wow! Kerri Callahan is one of the top bowlers in our league and one of the best bowlers I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. As only a sophomore, she has broken numerous records in our league. She is an athlete our team can rely on to also come out strong and to not be distracted by the spectators or other coaches. She always has her game face on and is always working on improving her shot. Our championship game says it all, in game 3 she bowled a near perfect game with 11 straight strikes and ending with 298 game. She had a series of 766, the highest ever in our league. She qualified for our individual championship and won high series. She won the league high game and qualified for our first ever State tournament. I am looking forward to your next 2 years as a Kellenberg bowler!

Boys Varsity Bowling
The Boys Varsity Bowling team had another successful year, finishing 8 and 4 and third place in their league. Throughout the year, one of our motivational ideas was to “keep looking forward”. I would constantly remind the team that we don’t have a time machine after a missed shot and to focus on the next one. With that mentality in mind, the team stayed relaxed and focused which resulted in a great run down the stretch and into the playoffs. Unfortunately, we lost on the Semi Finals to the eventual champion, St. Anthony’s. Even though the loss was not the outcome we wanted, there was still some positive outcomes with the result. Kellenberg bowling is most definitely on the rise and perennial winners St. Anthony’s and Chaminade are starting to look over their shoulders. With a little more hard work and effort, I am confident that Kellenberg will continue to surprise our opponents and eventually become league champions. Before we look too far into the future, I would like to thank our three current seniors Richard Deem, Brian Hanna, and Caleb Cassano for your dedication and commitment to our team over the years. You are leaving our program headed in the right direction and we wish you well in your future endeavors. I would also like to that the parents and spectators for your sacrifices and support throughout another great season.

Girls Varsity Track and Field
J.W. Goethe once wrote, “Whatever you do, or dream you can do, begin it. BOLDNESS has genius, power and magic in it.” Being blessed to attend a school like Kellenberg is the flame in the candle of your life. Being at student-ATHLETE, in any sport, is the TORCH-igniting a whole well-rounded life of the magic of challenging yourself, meeting new friends, cementing relationships, and creating a better future. This year’s winter track and field team boldly braved the dampness, the cold, the rain, some snow, a couple of frigid days on the low tide beach when all other surfaces were unavailable, training to meet their goals. The team ran to the silver plaque team finish at the NSCHSGAA Championships, qualified as the only Catholic school from Long Island to compete in the 120th running of the prestigious Millrose Games, with seniors Sophia Conde, Danielle Tercynski, and juniors Mackenzie Brown and Sienna Piementel representing. Senior Martine Demesyeux led an incredible 1-2-3-5 finish in the triple jump at the Sectional championships. Demesyeux’s performance earned her the “Field Event MVP” of the Meet Award. She pulled Keierra Ndukwu to second, Sienna Pimentel to third, and Brooke Bowen to fifth in that event alone. The team had two relays, the 4×200 and the 4×800 run to bronze places at the Catholic State Championship Intersectional Meet, and Demesyeux’s performance qualified her to represent Kellenberg and the CHSAA at the NY State Federation Championship Meet. A final positive sign of the rich breadth of the team for the future was when a sprinter, Kayla Stair; a mid-distance runner, Mackenzie Brown; a jumper, Martine; and a intermediate hurdler, Sienna Piementel, combined to not only run on the 4×200 relay at the Long Island “Elite Meet,” but ran to third place medals against the best teams on Long Island. Congratulations and than you girls.

Katelin Lopez
Renown Catholic scholar Bishop Fulton J. Sheen once wrote “Each of us makes his or her weather, each of us determines the color of the skies in the emotional universe in which we inhabit.” This young woman’s tireless work effort has created her own weather- for among storms, there is only the sunny sky of Katelin Lopez’s sustained labors-and it is truly a labor of love. Katelin shows up whatever the conditions are, however her day has gone, always giving her best, always giving it the real “All-in.” That work effort resulted in her recording personal bests in the 55, the 300, and the 400. We are honored tonight to award the Bernie Ward Commitment Award to our very dedicated, highly committed, Katelin Lopez.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Zaria Pessoa.
To improve over five feet in a span of your high school years in a skilled event such as the shot put, is quite an achievement. But to improve five feet over the course of ONE season is an incredible achievement. Zaria Pessoa tackled her new, (albeit late) found sport and tackled it with the profound gusto of hard work and coachability, training with her teammates in the loneliness of the shot put fields. That focus resulted in her going from 21 feet to nearly 27 feet in the shot put. We are honored to award our M.I.P. award tonight to senior Zaria Pessoa
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Martine Demesyeux
Learning from a teammate who is now a competing Division 1 athlete, Martine honed her triple jump skills to a new level this year. A consistent 32 foot jumper last year, Martine led a sweep of her event at the NSCHSGAA Championship Meet, jumping a personal best of 34-11.5, just a skooch under the 35 foot barrier. She followed that up with a runner up performance at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship Meet, qualifying her for the NYState Championship Meet, and ran on our outstanding All-Long Island 4×200 meter relay. We are honored to award senior Martine Demesyeux our Winter Track and Field MVP Award.

This past season, the Firebird wrestling team left an enduring legacy of success, camaraderie, and unwavering commitment . Their achievements—both as a team and as individuals—will be remembered as a testament to the transformative power of hard work, perseverance, and a shared commitment to excellence. Nevertheless, many of the firebirds you see up here on stage are not done yet and will get back to work to achieve their ultimate career goal and also work to achieve our goal in being the best team in NY State. We wish our seniors the best of luck as some of them move on to compete at the collegiate level.

Robert Sileo
Robert has come a long way from where he started freshman year. From moving up 5 lanes, and having more than 10 personal best times this season, we couldn’t have picked a better candidate for this award. He was captain of the team this year and was so eager to make sure he was the best he could be a try as hard as he could. He made goals in and out of the pool and conquered them all.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Brandon Kozlik
Brandon is a swimmer that a lot of the under classmen look up and strive to be like. His inspiration and commitment to the team helped us make the easy decision to only give him the captain position, but also MVP. He is someone that truly inspires other swimmers and will have no problem staying after practice a little longer to help the under classmen with their swimming techniques. We know that his impact on the team will definitely be one that will be a part of this program for years to come.
Cheerleading
The Varsity cheerleading team was faced with many challenges this competitive season. With seven seniors, three returning and eleven new juniors, and down the road one freshman, the majority of this team was brand new to competing at the Varsity level. Having a talented group of individuals doesn’t always transpire to a cohesive unit, and this team struggled to get where we needed to be. But it was not for lack of effort. Day after day, the girls worked tirelessly to perfect our two routines. Game Day is a new and up and coming competitive aspect of cheerleading. We have always enjoyed cheering on the boys basketball and football teams on the sidelines, but recently Game Day has emerged into an entirely new competitive option. We challenged this team with a more complex Game Day routine, while still expecting the same elite level traditional routine that we’re used to. We were able to place top three in both routines throughout the season at CHSAA Regionals and at States. But with injuries, illnesses, and unforeseen setbacks, we did not have an outstanding showing at Nationals this year. We were impressed with how this group handled adversity and appreciate the level of effort that they gave even on the hardest days. It goes to show that you can work as hard as you can and things may still not go your way. We got knocked down but continued to get up again. And Coach Lastig and I will forever be proud of you for that. This group will always have a special place in our hearts because we were there for eachother when we needed it most, and that’s more important than any trophy or banner.

Boys Varsity Basketball
The boys varsity basketball team was a pleasure to coach this year. The culture of the program can be identified as working hard and competing the right way. To that end, the season can be looked at as a success.
The basketball season can be a long one. There are many long, dark, cold days. However, the team never got discouraged from difficult days or tough losses. It would be naive to judge a season off a 24 game record when we were together for over three months, 6 times a week, for a couple of hours each day. The coaching staff is very proud of the team, consisting of 5 seniors, 8 juniors, and two sophomores who remained connected and worked together each night.
Our non-league games were filled with great competition and lessons to improve for league play. There were many exciting performances. The team lost a close game at the SouthSide Holiday Classic Championship to the eventual Nassau County runner up by 2 points. They competed in a game down to the buzzer vs Suffolk County champion Southampton. We beat Floral Park in the Macie’s Mission game and also beat All Hallows from the Bronx in the Tom Crotty Classic.
The NSCHSAA demonstrated the most parody in many years. We finished with 5 league wins and we were an overtime loss from second place in the final standings. I would like to summarize the season with the last regular season game. We had Mass together as a team, beat Saint John the Baptist at the buzzer, and the senior parents hosted the players for dinner. This is truly what Kellenberg basketball is all about. The team this year had a real chance to make a run in the playoffs. Saint John the Baptist, who we beat twice, is playing in the championship at Hofstra tonight. Unfortunately, we did not finish the season on the court the way we all hoped for.
Off of the court, the team had parallel success. We were able to further our relationship and grow in Faith together when we went to Stella Maris to decorate the retreat house, pray together, and share a meal. We hosted a day tournament in which we raised thousands of dollars for the Macie’s Mission foundation. Further, the team was recognized for their mission of playing competitive basketball within the COR values embedded by Kellenberg Memorial. We were awarded the Board 41 James Greene Sportsmanship award voted on by the Long Island District Board Number 41 Referees as the team that demonstrated the most respect within competition.
The coaching staff would like to thank Mr. John Fechtmann and the rest of the Administration for their support. We also would like to thank the parents for entrusting their sons to be under our direction in the basketball program. Lastly, We would like to thank the seniors for their commitment to the program and we wish them well in their next endeavors.

Connor Sanders was everything a coach could ask for in a player and teammate. Last year, as a junior, he did not make the roster. As a senior, Connor proved to be a great addition to the team. He worked hard every night and could always be found supporting his teammates. The coaching staff is very proud of Connor and thankful for his perspective, maturity, and hard work.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Austin Wrynn
Austin Wrynn joined the Varsity basketball team as a junior last year. He did not receive much playing time but always worked hard. This year as a senior, Austin continued to develop his game- all because of his determination and hard work. In the second half of the year this year, he turned into a player we depended on when competing it games.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Stephen Kiernan
Throughout the year, Stephen proved himself to be a leader of the basketball team. He worked really hard, was a good teammate, and could be counted on in big games. Stephen had many expectations from the coaching staff- disrupt penetrations to the paint, rebound the ball, and score on the other end. The coaches are proud of his efforts and his leadership and are looking forward to his development into next season.

Varsity Ice Hockey
The Kellenberg Varsity Hockey team, in my eyes, had a successful season. The team moved up to the AA Division this year and faced off against highly skilled and very competitive hockey teams. The boys rose to the occasion and proved that they belonged in the higher division. Although our record of 5 – 8 and 1 placed us in 6th place out of 8 teams, we were a competitive team and some of the losses we took were only separated by a goal. I’d like to thank my assistant coaches Pete Afanasewicz and Joe Brand for all their help this season, their knowledge and experience are an asset to me and the team.
One of the highlights of our season took place on December 22nd the Friday night before Christmas. Cantiague Park Ice Arena’s stands were filled with family, friends, faculty and alumni in anticipation for an official Varsity league game between the Firebirds and the Flyers that had not taken place in over twenty years. We were facing the first place Flyers who had not lost a game yet at this point in the season, and we were 1 and 5. To say, “it wasn’t looking good”, would have been appropriate.
The puck dropped and 30 seconds into the 1st period, the Firebirds lit the lamp. The game was back and forth, the Flyers scored the next 2 goals and then the Firebirds came back scoring the next 3 goals. We were leading by 2 goals, but the Flyers played hard and squeaked one past our goalie early in the third period. The Firebirds were still leading 4-3, but the Flyers were buzzing, time was dwindling down and with a few minutes left, the Flyers pulled their goalie to try and tie the game. With less than a minute on the clock the Firebirds scored an empty net goal for the win! It was a great game in many ways, and one the team and I will remember for a long time.

Jack Crotty
Jack Crotty was the team Captain this year and MVP of the team last year, it is only fitting that Jack a year older and year wiser would earn the Bernie Ward Commitment Award. Jack is steadfast and humble and possess the traits of a leader amongst his teammates. He is the strong silent type of player that leads by example. He is a great hockey player and embodies what it means to be a team player.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Jack Falco
Jack Falco is our Most Improved Player this year. He came to play for the Firebirds this year and I wasn’t sure skill wise where he would fit in, but I knew spirit wise that he belonged on the team. Jack’s positive attitude was contagious on the bench, in the locker room, during practices and games. Jack worked hard this year and improved his game earning playing time as the season progressed. His vibe was his best asset and his teammates would respond to every shift he played, culminating in scoring a goal this season.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Nicholas Rochefort
Nicholas Rochefort is our MVP this year, but not just for this year. He has played for the Varsity team since he was a Sophomore. As a player he has always been skilled and consistently reliable on defense. His greatest attribute is his intelligence, he is a smart player making very few mistakes, I wish he would shoot more from the point, but he always seemed to make the right play. Sometimes being the MVP is not about scoring the most goals, sometimes its about playing defense and always having your teams back. As a player and teammate he is another strong silent type, few words, and always a smile.

Girls Varsity Basketball
The 2023 – 2024 Girls Varsity Basketball team will forever be remembered and defined by one word: resiliency. From the very first day of tryouts to the time spent at Founder’s Hollow during the team’s annual retreat, it was evident that this year’s team, compromised of six seniors, five juniors and four sophomores, was a special group of talented individuals. Starting off the season with great wins against Locust Valley and Carle Place, the team was unfortunately struck by the injury bug, which saw multiple girls succumb to prolonged injuries. While some teams could have used this as an excuse for a difficult stretch, the team instead rallied together to work harder at practice, compete to the best of their ability and prove how resilient they really were. During the last two weeks of the season, that hard work finally paid off, as the team was able to finish the regular season on a five game winning streak. During that time, the team averaged sixty-two points a game and earned victories over Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist and St. Dominic’s.
Overall, with everything the team went through, the girls finished with a record of 11 – 13, and a league record of 6-8, which earned them a tie for 5th place in the Catholic League. More impressively, the coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of what it was able to accomplish off the court. In the season opener, the team participated in inaugural Macie’s Mission Showcase here at Kellenberg, where both the boys’ and girls’ programs were able raise money and bring awareness to Pompeii Disease. Furthermore, to close out the season, the team was able to raise over $3,500 for the Christopher Battaglia Scholarship Fund through its Senior Game and the selling of Firebird shirts. Events like these are evidence that basketball is more than just a game; its opportunity to bring the school community closer together to do amazing things greater than themselves.
The coaching staff wishes nothing but the best for our six seniors as they move on from the “Birds Nest” next year. Always remember that Kellenberg is your home. Thank you to our parents as well for all your support throughout the year! God Bless Firebird Nation!

Victoria Saporito
Every few years there is a player who comes around that embodies the program’s mantra of “Bleed Blue and Gold”. For this year’s team, Victoria Saporito was that player. There was not a game or practice that Victoria didn’t give everything she had for teammates. It did not matter if Victoria started a game, came off the bench or played minimal minutes; Victoria’s effort was always 110%. Even when the coaching staff asked Victoria to come off the bench earlier in the season, it was never a “why me” attitude but instead an understanding as to what was best for the team. This unselfish gesture came to epitomize Victoria’s commitment to not only working on her individual game but always putting the best interest of the team first. By season’s end, Victoria had cemented herself in the team’s starting lineup and was a major contributor to the team’s winning streak to finish out the year. The impact Victoria had on her teammates will be a story to tell in the years to come and the coaching staff will certainly miss having her on the court next season. This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to senior captain, Victoria Saporito.
Most Improved Player Award Winner
Kennedy Mayers
Coming into the season, Kennedy Mayers was one of the returning starters for last year’s team. While one could be complacent with returning to a similar role, Kennedy relished with the idea of improving her overall game so that it would aid the growth of the team. Although she suffered an early setback due to injury, Kennedy came back with something to prove in her final weeks of the season. As the season wore on, Kennedy became the “spark” the team needed on the court and the “glue” the team needed off the court. Kennedy became a dominant force in the paint with an improved offensive skillset and an imposing defensive prowess. Kennedy’s undeniable improvement was one of the main catalysts for the team’s success this year. The coaching staff will miss not just her shot blocking presence on the court next year but her genuine and caring personality as a teammate. This year’s Most Improved Players is senior, Kennedy Mayers.
Most Valuable Player Award Winner
Jessica Paprocky
While the word “valuable” can at times be cliché, Jessica Paprocky’s value to this year’s team is undeniable. Having started in almost every game over the last three seasons on Varsity, Jessica’s work ethic and passion for the game made her a tremendous competitor and one of the top players in the Catholic League. As a senior, Jessica again led the team in points, assists and steals and finished third in the Catholic league in points scored per game. While basketball statistics are important, Jessica’s greatest contribution to the Girls Basketball program has been her example as a model student-athlete and teammate. Without question, Jessica was loved by her teammates and was the epitome of a true leader. As a three-time All-League recipient, and now recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year, Jessica Paprocky has cemented her legacy as one of the best to ever wear a Kellenberg Girls Basketball jersey. The program and coaching staff will truly miss Jessica in the years to come. This year’s Most Valuable Player is senior captain, Jessica Paprocky.
