After tirelessly working on their routines for six months, fifteen determined Kellenberg Cheerleaders traveled to Orlando, Florida to take the mat at the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Invitational competition. The Firebirds did not disappoint, advancing to the national semifinals among a field of over 100 teams.
The beginning of this exciting week started on Sunday, February 1, when Kellenberg hosted a tournament send off for the cheerleading team and their families. A mass was held to bless the cheerleaders as they prepared to travel to Orlando. The cheerleaders previewed both their Game Day and Traditional routines for family and friends. The smiles and applause from the stands reflected immense pride and anticipation for what would follow.
Upon arriving in Florida, the girls successfully hit both routines which were broadcast on ESPN. Friday, February 6, was the most anticipated day, with Kellenberg Cheerleading performing in the preliminary round. This schedule proved to be very challenging as their Game Day routine was slotted for 9:41 am and their Traditional routine scheduled for 6:30. They would have to overcome a long period of waiting between routines which tests endurance. Their patience and professionalism paid off when, at 8:58, the results were posted announcing Kellenberg was advancing to the semifinals.
The pressure built with every round as fewer teams survived the competitive field. Under enormous pressure and nerves, the Firebirds hit a home run with a flawless performance in their Traditional routine at the State Farm Field House. This memorable moment will forever remain in the hearts of both the cheerleaders and coaches, proving anything can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and commitment.
This dedication and commitment of the varsity cheerleaders was shared throughout the Junior Varsity and Latin School team, both having an extremely accomplished season. The Kellenberg Cheer program is a structured environment that offers Latin schoolers and above to enter the field of competitive cheer early, ensuring a deep bench to continue the Firebird tradition of exceptionalism.
Ms. Kass, the Junior Varsity Cheer coach, stated, “The team is very adaptable and everyone is great to work with.”
The Junior Varsity team lead by Ms. Kass, had a total of 3 competitions all leading to the Championships held at Hofstra University. The cheerleaders, anxious and excited, represented Kellenberg well, achieving second place overall out of 7 teams.
An exciting exhibition was also held by the Latin School team, showcasing the levels of talent Kellenberg has to offer. Overall, we can safely say the cheerleading program here at Kellenberg demonstrates how commitment, dedication, and friendship yields well-earned success and everlasting memories.
