On March 31, the girls JV softball team took the field against the Friars of St. Anthony’s.
Anna Anzalone and Michaela Ressegger started off the offense by shocking the Friars with precision execution of the short game. But their two runs in the first would be followed by a scoreless five innings. It wasn’t until Brooke Bencivenga started the 7th inning with a stand-up triple that the Firebirds would rally to score another 8 runs.
Freshman Molly Silecchia pitched an extraordinary game with 12 strikeouts in the 10-0 shut-out against the Friars. The team was led offensively by Anna Anzalone who went 3 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored, Michaela Ressegger who was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, and Molly Silecchia who also tallied 3 hits on the day. “It’s truly remarkable to see a group of girls who manage to balance being so incredibly talented and competitive with truly supportive of one another”, reflects Mrs. Colucci, coach of the JV softball team.
On the same day, the Varsity Softball team improved its overall record to 3 wins and no losses by defeating Our Lady of Mercy Academy by a score of 17-5 in 5 innings.
Offensively the Firebirds were led by Julia Maniscalco who went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and Presley Borne who went 3 for 3, scored 4 runs, stole 3 bases and drove in 2 runs. Ava Golio earned the win striking out six batters in five innings of work. Senior Jackie O’Donnell spoke of her team’s success.”Our team consists of 18 moving parts who all have to fulfill their role in order to succeed.”
Clearly, the future is bright for the Kellenberg softball teams.
