The crowd was on the edge of their seats, anxiously waiting for a winner to be announced. Although the Gold team had a chance of winning a 4-peat victory, the Blue team secured their win with an overall score of 2,069,– as opposed to the 2,000 of Gold.
After months of dedicated practicing and planning, girls from the middle-school and high-school took the stage on Saturday, May 11. Friends and families flocked to Hofstra’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex to watch the “Nightmare on Blue Street ” and “Gold Sweet Escape”’ dance their way to victory.
Kellenberg holds Blue and Gold performances annually, and serves as a tradition extending all the way to the Maria Regina and St. Agnes high school days. To open the night, seniors Juliet Rotela, Blue’s narrator, and Emily Connelly, Gold’s narrator, dueted the National Anthem. Fr. Thomas Cardone, S.M., gave the invocation. He reminded participants that as followers of Jesus through Mary, we are made in God’s image and likeness. He closed his prayer by referring to the Blessed Virgin Mary, a lovely lady dressed in blue, who stands at the right hand of the Lord, who is arrayed in gold.
The Blue team took the arena on a journey to rid Blue Street of the haunting curse of senior narrator, Juliet Rotela, better known as the monster “Baddie Blue”. Senior narrators Ciara Beirne and Vanessa Buono were met by numerous villains whom they overcame to bring back the blue spirit and awaken from their bad dream. After Blue’s entrance team performance, the audience encountered the vampires of the Jazz team, the zombies of the Hip-Hop team, the witches of the Tap team, and the skeletons of the Tumbling team who dazzled the audience with their incredible routines.
In contrast to the Blue team’s nightmare, the Gold team had a sweeter dream in store. The Gold narrators Emily Connelly and Kiera Chase were guided by Emma Galluzzi, known as GT Victor. The audience was led into a whimsical rendition of the iconic game Candy Land– renamed “Goldie Land”. Instead of game pieces and miniature characters, the girls of the Gold team acted as sweet friends who aided each other in their race to the golden buzzer. Goldie Land was occupied by the Hershey kisses of Entrance, the gingerbread of Jazz, the candy canes of Tap, the licorice-lair villains of Hip-Hop, and the sugar plum fairies of Tumbling, who all electrified the crowd with their amazing dance moves.
Junior Evelina Triadafilis, a member of Blue Jazz, shares, “My favorite part of the show was going to the gym and all sitting together and getting ready. Even though we stressed out for everything to look good, it’s those moments that make Blue and Gold worth it!”
The Blue and Gold Show is a beloved spirit event that unites families, faculty members, and students for a night of competition and fun. Kellenberg would like to thank Gold team captains Brooke Butler and Olivia Moscola, Blue team captains Christine Eposito and Isabelle Silecchia, and all of those involved who contributed to this year’s incredible show.
