The Boy’s Track and Field team competed at the Nike Indoor National track meet on March 10th and 11th at the Nike Armory in Washington Heights, NY. This marked the first time in Kellenberg Memorial history where the team qualified for the 4×200 championship category. The relay consisted of Kavon Morris ‘23, Evans Linzey ‘24, Ethan Thomas ‘24, and Mario Sanabria ‘25. They qualified for Nationals after running a time of 1:30.63 at the Ocean Breeze Invitational February 4, 2023, making them the second fastest team in New York.
The experience was one for the ages, and it served to be a memorable and unequaled moment in the athletic career of the boys. Evans Linzey compared the standout event to the team’s everyday meets, saying, “It is different from a regular track meet because it is much more professional in terms of everything. They set everything up much nicer and offer us special gifts like bags and windbreakers that really let us know that we made it.”
Despite the contrasting points, it was business as usual for the runners. In the qualifying heat, the boys ran a time of 1:30.97. This enabled them to compete in finals the following day, where they placed 8th out of 43 finalists, despite injury. The relay was two spots away from obtaining the “All American” status.
The coaches are extremely proud of this team for their vast improvement in such a short period of time. The coaching staff also wishes to acknowledge Malachai McCaskill ‘25 and Nicholas Baldwin ‘25 for training after their regular season finished as alternates for the relay. Thank you to all of the students and faculty who traveled to the Nike Armory to support the team as they finished an extremely successful season!
