Article by Phoenix writer Ryleigh O’Neill ’28:
On Monday, February 3, the Fashion club got together in the millennium room for a meeting with guest speaker Isy Odiaka.
Isy Odiaka is a Kellenberg graduate from the class of 2019 who has an extensive knowledge of Nigerian culture, which was the topic of her presentation. She explained the different clothing styles for each different culture she showed.
A fun incorporation of this presentation was the idea that the students were able to wear the different clothing pieces from each ethnic group to be able to visualize how the outfits would appear. Each piece of clothing represented what the people would wear in each of the different cultures. This was a great experience for the students to be able to try on these clothes and have some fun during the presentation.
Isy spoke about not only the culture of Nigeria but the subcultures as well. She also spoke about the history of her name in her culture and explained to the students her background. Students felt that the turnout of this presentation gave them more education on the topic of Nigeria and Black History Month.
Sophomore Kayla Charles says that “not only am I more comfortable with this topic after the presentation, but I also feel more educated and enjoyed hearing from Isy.” Isy gave the students a space to feel engaged in Nigerian culture by giving them a better understanding of what it is like.
Kellenberg would like to thank Mrs. Delbrune for organizing this event as well as Isy Odiaka for coming to the school and giving the students the opportunity to learn about herself and her culture.
