On Thursday, February 8th, the Kellenberg Girls Varsity Bowling Team won the League Championship against St. John the Baptist by a score of 6-3.
The girls opened the match strong, winning game one with a score of 880-771.
However, in a nail-biting game two, the team came close to victory with only a two point loss, scoring 888 points to St. John’s 890.
After battling back and forth during the first two games, the Lady Firebirds came out big in game 3, winning the round 987-833. Sophomore Kerri Callahan bowled a near perfect game, racking up 11 straight strikes and earning a score of 298.
Kerri broke both the school and the league record with a 766 series on the day, receiving the high series award for the season and MVP of the championship.
Other notable top scorers of the match were junior Colleen Tierney with a 412 series as well as senior captains Grace Pizzardi and Jenna Biscotti who had a 393 and 388 series respectively.
When asked about the match, Jenna shared, “Winning the championship this year was truly an exhilarating achievement! It could never have been accomplished without the whole team’s effort.”
Grace added, “We would have never been able to win if not for the energy of the entire team motivating each other. As one of the team captains, I felt proud that everyone rallied together and was a bonded team.”
However, this championship is not the end for the Girls Varsity Bowling Team. Six Lady Firebirds qualified for the upcoming individual championship on February 15th: seniors Grace Pizzardi and Jenna Biscotti, juniors Colleen Tierney and Emma Dolan, and sophomores Kerri Callahan and Chloe Horstmann. The team will also be competing in the first ever girls state bowling match in March.
Coach Frisina remarked, “I’m still amazed by how well the girls did. They were the epitome of teammates and came out stronger than I had ever seen them bowl. They worked together the entire season and improved so much day after day, I could not be more proud of their accomplishments.”
This victory brings the team’s record to 13 wins and 2 losses for the season.
