On Tuesday, September 26th, 2023, the Girls Varsity Soccer team defeated soccer powerhouse South Side High School by a score of 2:1.
Senior Eva Garcia scored the first goal 15 minutes into the match, receiving the ball by a cross kick from sophomore Morgan Farrell. With time winding down in the half, senior Kathleen Cooney scored another goal with 6 seconds left on the clock.
The Firebirds kept up their spirit throughout the second half of the game, with a great defense from seniors Sophia Conde and Emma Chungata, juniors Olivia Jungkunst and Emma Murphy, and sophomore Michaela Ressegger.
Senior Ava Wayrich, junior Dalia Morelli, and sophomore Mia Claro controlled the middle of the field throughout the match.
Junior Bridget LaRosa played a great game in net, recording 10 saves during the match.
Kathleen Cooney shared, “Beating South Side was incredibly important to us. As we evaluate the strength of our program, beating a quality team like South Side – perennially considered a Long Island soccer powerhouse – shows everyone how far KGVS has come.”
The team looks to continue their season strong, with an upcoming home game against Holy Trinity High School on October 6th. Students and faculty can watch the team in action on Matthew Field, kickoff at 4:15 PM.
