In a fitting ending to a magical season, the Girls Varsity “A” Tennis Team captured the NSCHSGAA Division A championship last Friday by defeating league rival St. Anthony’s by the score of 5-2.
By turning the tables on the Friars, the squad avenged their only loss of the season, and ended up with an outstanding record of 11 and 1. Led once again by the all-league trio of Nicole Vassalle, Sydney Fischer and Emma Soccodato, the Firebirds swept all three singles matches.
The doubles teams of Megan Loomie with Jessie Moreo, and Mairead Manning with Kristen Elder were victorious in two exciting doubles matches to secure the title for the Firebirds. Coach Chris Grennen summed up the season as follows: “Clearly our singles players were the class of the league this season with a combined match record of 33 wins and only 3 losses. What put the team over the top, however, was the ability of our doubles players to grind it out whenever necessary and win matches in crucial situations. In a sport that rewards individual achievement, this was truly a team effort.”
