On May 13th, the Kellenberg Girls Varsity Track and Field Team traveled to Randall’s Island to compete at the CHSAA Intersectional Championship.
The Freshman Girls’ Firebird Track Team took home the bronze plaque for third place, an achievement made more impressive since they were the smallest of 34 teams and competed with only five athletes.
All five girls placed in the meet with Anabelle Senatus winning first place for the Intersectional Triple Jump.
Along with the freshman team’s success, the sophomore team tied for sixth place. Many personal best performances included: Bianca Jean-Baptiste in the discus throw and shot put, Damyrna Neas in the shot put, Sienna Pimentel in the 400 meter hurdles, and Kayla Stair and Tatianna Robertson in the 100 meter and 4×100 meter relays.
Michaela Dennean and Shannon Pulis, who also achieved personal bests in the 1500 meter run, came back to score in the 4×400 relay with Caroline Malewski and Sienna Pimentel.
On the same day, the upperclasswomen in the Girls Varsity Track and Field Team had many successes in the events at the North Shore Invitational.
Junior Allison Abrahams had huge breakthroughs in both the 200 and 400 meter runs. She is very proud of her teammates’ success as well, saying they have “all been working very hard this season,” and she is “beyond grateful for (her) teammates and their accomplishments.”
Other athletes earned personal bests including Lisa Anderson for the 400 meter dash as well as Danielle Tercynski and Jessica Sanchez who ran big personal bests in the 800 meter run.
Maria Contreras threw a huge personal best in discus, Klaudia Kurek had her season best in the high jump, and Olivia Spirakis scored once again in both the long and triple jumps.
Kylie Mummendey, Kellenberg’s first pole vault competitor in 11 years, cleared over six feet.
The girls will compete again on May 27th at Icahn Stadium for the CHSAA Varsity Intersectional Championships.
