From Friday November 22nd through Sunday November 24th, Kellenberg’s Drama Club put on their show stopping fall production of Guys and Dolls.
Written by playwrights Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling, Guys and Dolls takes place in 1950s
Manhattan. It tells the story of the underground life of gamblers and their crap games all while keeping up with their “dolls”. There are themes of sin, romance, commitment, and redemption. This classic show was masterfully recreated by the Kellenberg Drama Club.
The production was wonderfully directed by Mr. Murphy, who remarked that, “Guys and Dolls was the first great musical comedy written for the Broadway Stage, and in spite of its comical tone, it ultimately is about finding your family. The Drama Club family certainly reflects that message.” The cast ranging from Latin School through high school brought the characters to life.
Junior Maeve Gately played Sarah Brown, the idealistic “mission doll.” She commented that, “Playing Sarah Brown was honestly a dream come true. I have been wanting to play that role for a while, and I’m so blessed to have been able to have this experience with such a talented and amazing cast.”
The Drama Club is abundant with talent and is an overall wonderful experience for all grades. Junior Grace Knappe portrayed a member of the mission band and she shared that, ”I appreciate the community and friendships I’ve built in drama. Some of the people I have met in drama are some of my best friends. I also enjoy the aspect of performing on stage and putting a smile on the audience’s faces.”
The show was a success and was enjoyed by all ages. The Drama Club’s next performance is in the Spring with auditions occurring in the beginning of January. For students interested, they should see Mr. Murphy with any questions.
