Article by Phoenix writer Colleen Bayley ’23:
The squires celebrated their last days as members of the Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School on Thursday, May 26 at the annual Squire Barbecue. The students were first escorted to the center of the gymnasium for Mass and were later given a special blessing by Father Daniel Griffin S.M. for their success and joy in their journey through the Latin School.
Following the ceremony, bagels were distributed amongst the students for breakfast. Later, the eager eighth-grade class prepared for an exciting day ahead. The students spent the entirety of the day outside on Luke and John Fields. The faculty provided field games including Kan Jam, corn hole, volleyball, and Gaga ball. The inflatable contractions, both the obstacle course and the jousting pit, were a big attraction. Some students brought other fun games, such as Wiffle ball, football, spike ball, and much more. The students took advantage of these perks, getting into intense competitions against each other. For lunch, the squires were given Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets, chips, and a choice of a cookie or brownie. A cotton candy machine was available which the students enjoyed throughout the day as well.
Mr. Brian A’Hearn, homeroom moderator of 8E describes it as, “a high spirited and fun-filled day.” He continued saying, “The kids were amazing and had a great time. They loved to celebrate and enjoy themselves and each other.”
A special thank you to all faculty and staff who assisted in the preparations for Thursday, especially Mrs. Maria Korzekwinski, Assistant Principal for the Latin School, who led the organization of the Squire Barbecue. An extended congratulations is given to all squires and the best of luck to them all in their high school ventures.
