On January 27, students who have excelled musically at Kellenberg were recognized for their commitment and accolades at the Music Awards Recognition Breakfast.
New York is nationally known as one of the best places for an aspiring musician to thrive. Nassau Country, in particular, is nestled with talented students across many musical genres and has grown into one of the most competitive areas for high school musicians.
Regardless, Kellenberg students continued to shine with over twenty-four students recognized for their outstanding musical achievements. Over the past few years, Kellenberg’s music program has transformed into an exceptional hub of creativity, the new Firebird Center for Arts & Athletics (FCAA) now serving as the prime musical heart for the vibrant musicians of Kellenberg.
Students in attendance, representing all grades, were awarded based on their extraordinary pursuits as members of Kellenberg’s Phoenix, Latin School, or Firebird groups, spanning across chorus, band, or orchestra, Those present were selected by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) for All County, All State, or Honors Band; Long Island Student String Festival Association (LISFA); New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA); or for individualized merit awards.
During the breakfast, Mr Benintendi, the Assistant Principal for Activites, acknowledged the students for not only their personal accolades but their dedication throughout the school. Afterwards, Mr. Vegas shared his sadness for the seniors leaving this year but excitement for the future of the underclassmen present.
Exemplifying the level of excellence Kellenberg students hold, Senior Jack Tedesco competed in NYSSMA for Level 5 and was invited to join the All County Division 5 mixed chorus. “It was a great experience to be a part of,” shares Jack, “All the top qualifying NYSSMA participants got together to perform an amazing concert.” Jack, along with juniors Grace Knappe and Victoria Vasker were recognized for our talent and participation in the Vocal NYSSMA festival.
Senior Madeline Naughton was awarded the Long Island Scholar Artist Merit Award for Theatre. Annually, this prestigious award is given to eight students based on academic performance and an artistic audition. Madeline shares, “Balancing Theatre and academics can be a challenge, but receiving the award really proved to me the importance of hard work, and how it can lead you to success in all areas.”
The Music Department is overwhelmed by the tenacity of their students. Mr. Garcia shares, “I am overjoyed to see my students striving to be at this level. Seeing all of their continual achievements at this level, their recognition by the state, and their determination is inspiring.”
These outstanding students have set the precedent for the continuously growing music program at Kellenberg.
