Kellenberg Memorial High School hosted an Outdoor College Mini Fair in mid-September. The event began on Monday, September thirteenth, and concluded on Friday, the seventeenth.
Ms. Gulmi, a college liaison at Kellenberg, drew inspiration from her previous experience recruiting students from California to Hofstra University. The Mini Fair brought a renewed interest to the start of the college process for students. Ms. Gulmi observed, “Even though we were wearing masks, the event felt relaxed. Seeing the interactions between the students and the college representatives felt like Kellenberg was returning to a new sense of normalcy.”
Students held stacks of brochures and talked vivaciously amongst themselves as they walked between the college tables. Notable universities that sent representation to the fair throughout the week included Salve Regina, Adelphi, Syracuse, Northeastern, Sacred Heart, St. John’s, and Stony Brook.
The representatives provided the firebirds with pamphlets that contained information concerning graduation rates, undergraduate areas of study, academic opportunities, and financial aid facts.
Students also received the contact information of the admissions office of the colleges they wish to contact in the future. Kellenberg’s College Placement Office hopes to continue the Mini Fair in the spring of 2022.
As for the indoor college preparations, virtual college visits are held after school from 2:55 to 3:30 in the library for colleges that are unable to send representatives to Kellenberg. The virtual aspect provides a stress-free educational experience that Juniors should feel free to capitalize on. Students are given the resources to “tour” colleges on campus through events such as the Mini Fair and virtual visits.
