Article by Phoenix writer Amelia Campbell ’26:
Nearly 200 firebird faithful gathered to celebrate the first XLT of the year on October 1st.
This month, we had not only one guest speaker, but two. Students witnessed firsthand as Mr. and Mrs. Campbell recounted and reflected on their experiences during multiple Lourdes pilgrimages.
The Campbell’s have been going on the Lourdes trip since 2019, after their daughter had the opportunity to be a part of it through Kellenberg. They shared some of their most powerful experiences, along with the ways it has impacted their lives. A common theme of them both was the ability to transcend language barriers and unite with strangers through faith. The Campbell’s also shared an encounter with a woman on the street who was looking for directions to the baths. After receiving directions, she found the Campbell’s again the next day and thanked them profusely for their help.
These yearly trips are part of Kellenberg’s tradition where rising seniors have the opportunity to visit Lourdes, France as pilgrims assisting the visitors. This holy site is where Our Lady appeared to a young girl named Bernadette in 1858 and is now associated with 72 confirmed miracles in the baths of the grotto.
Senior Grace Knappe, who previously attended the Lourdes trip, stated: “I was truly blessed to visit Lourdes with Mr. and Mrs. Campbell; listening to them describe the way Lourdes has touched their lives was truly powerful. I loved hearing about the many moments of service that happen there, whether at the baths, on the trains, or during prayer services. Their words reminded me of why Lourdes feels so special, not only to me, but to countless others who find comfort, healing, and faith in that sacred place.”
XLT, which stands for “exalt”, is a monthly celebration of our faith that is open to the public. It includes dinner, adoration, guest speakers, confession, and worship music led by Mr. Bursig and the XLT band.
