On Friday, November 8th, the Business club students, under the direction of Mr. Heitner and Mrs. York, competed in the Adelphi Apprentice Challenge. The marketing competition consisted of over 40 Long Island high schools with 250 students, with Kellenberg being the only Catholic school.
Eight Kellenberg students were put in random groups and were asked to create a marketing plan for the Metropolitan Golf Association, which is one of the nation’s oldest and largest golf associations. The MGA is working to recruit more family golfers, including women of all nationalities and backgrounds. The students had to brainstorm effective ways to engage women and diverse communities, ensuring that the sport grows more inclusively. The goal was to create a marketing campaign strategy in one hour and make a slogan that would appeal to a target market consisting of women. The students also needed to use both traditional advertising and digital programs like social media and influencer partnerships.
At the conclusion of those sixty minutes, five teams were assigned to boardrooms to present a four minute pitch to a panel of judges. One team from each boardroom was then picked to advance to the top 5 where they would present to the entire conference.
In the end, three Kellenberg students: Courtney Crimmins, Jennifer Guallpa and Annabelle Senatus, who were all in three different groups, made the final five. Annabelle Senatus says that, “Overall Adelphi University was super welcoming to all the schools and we each met new people and connected to our teammates. This was a great experience to gain exposure to the business world.”
The students left with gift bags from both Adelphi and the MGA, in addition to their increased knowledge and experience with the world of business. Congratulations to all who participated. If you are interested in the business club, please speak to either Mrs. York or Mr. Heitner.
