On October 11, CulinArt, Kellenberg’s food service provider, helped Kellenberg celebrate Hispanic Culture Month, when the kitchen staff presented many classic meals for the students during their lunch periods.
Dishes such as arroz con pollo proved to be hot items in the cafeteria. Junior Isabel Mathew said, “The event exposed students to various foods from Hispanic cultures that they may not have tried before. I saw many students on line for it, so it was definitely a success.”
The festivities continued after the school bell rang when the Spanish Club, in collaboration with the One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures Club and Latin Club, hosted a Dia de los Muertos in the Emmanuel Lounge.
Mrs. Marten, Spanish Club moderator, said, “It was very special to share this with the Latin Club and Cultures Club.”
According to Mrs. Marten, the turnout was amazing, with over 50 students there to celebrate.
Mrs. Marten was also very proud of the altar they created on which were placed candles and Pan de Muerto, or “bread of the dead.” According to tradition, Pan de Muerto is believed to be made from the souls that one pays respects to on Dia de los Muertos. The students enjoyed the bread while coloring in the traditional masks recognized alongside the holiday, often seen in media portrayals of Dia de los Muertos.
This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration shows how collaboration between Kellenberg’s students, faculty, and staff can result in innovative and exciting new events.
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, celebrates the culture and accomplishments of the Hispanic American community.
